You are lumping together 2 different scenes here bro. Hardcore was not the same scene as "punk". Especially when the NYC youth crew scene emerged in the mid to late 80s, hardcore rejected the nihilism of punk and the fashion statement of it all. Most hardcore kids by this point looked quasi 'normal', with crewcuts, sneakers and t-shirts. Bands like Breakdown, Side By Side, Gorilla Biscuits, Bold, Negative Approach, Lifesblood, etc....

In response to some earlier posts...The lyrics are from Agnostic Front who's singer is a Cuban immigrant, not a white guy. Yes, more white people are on welfare than other groups. But % of a race on welfare are lower for whites. Poverty rate is higher for non-whites. Lyrics were written by someones observation in the early 80's which may have been true in the population they were exposed to. Maybe not. The media then was also exploiting the subject contributing to perceptions.
First Skins were in England. Influenced by the Jamaican Rudeboys and British Mods around '68-'69. Centered on working class pride and street smarts. Musically around Jamaican Ska/Reggae and American Soul. Mid to late 70's saw some skins getting into punk. The British Movement and National Front fueled by immigrant workers getting jobs and sending money back home overseas saw nationalism and eventually more radical neo-Nazism of some skins. Poor journalism led to incorrect skin=Nazi.

In response to some earlier posts...The lyrics are from Agnostic Front who's singer is a Cuban immigrant, not a white guy. Yes, more white people are on welfare than other groups. But % of a race on welfare are lower for whites. Poverty rate is higher for non-whites. Lyrics were written by someones observation in the early 80's which may have been true in the population they were exposed to. Maybe not. The media then was also exploiting the subject contributing to perceptions.

First Skins were in England. Influenced by the Jamaican Rudeboys and British Mods around '68-'69. Centered on working class pride and street smarts. Musically around Jamaican Ska/Reggae and American Soul. Mid to late 70's saw some skins getting into punk. The British Movement and National Front fueled by immigrant workers getting jobs and sending money back home overseas saw nationalism and eventually more radical neo-Nazism of some skins. Poor journalism led to incorrect skin=Nazi.
