abortive, but eyeopening version of what will become one of my favourite 'ive had enough-lets slow down' records ever made. decomposing trees, strange and of course blue thunder..but my most memorable moment is hearing them cover ceremony by joy division- perhaps the best song j.d. wrote after shadowplay.
@kg2104 it's an 80's Gibson ES 335 Studio, which didn't have F-holes or fingerboard binding. He also had a late 70's MIJ Epiphone Riviera as a back up.
What I love is how Damon and Naomi, no matter where Dean goes, glide along sedately and beautifully, like Maureen Tucker split into a bassist and drummer. :)
Can anyone please help me figure out what guitar Dean Wareham plays? Seems like a Gibson ES 335 in this video...is this what he used when recording too ? This song is just gorgeous; in my opinion, the standout from On Fire (even though I acknowledge that's a bit redundant given how fluid that album is). What I would've given to have been in that gym...
I miss the days when real musicians could afford to buy the gear that these guys are playing. Now you have to be a collector and drop thousands of dollars. I bet the Ampeg B-15 bass amp Naiomi's playing alone would go for two grand. She probably paid a few hundred bucks for it.
What a great band, though...and playing in a gym. Crazy. And at the same time Poison was playing in some arena somewhere. Is there any justice in the world?
@JEdgarGroover Bands get gear like that because they are meant to have it. I have a 1979 Peavey amplifier and a 1975 MIJ P Bass that were given to me. It has nothing to do with money. Just fate.
@micheelvis Nobody gave Galaxie 500 their gear. They bought it. I'm glad that you believe in fate and magic and faires and wishes. But you know what? Wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which fills up first. Clearly you're way more special than everyone else because the universe has seen fit to bestow upon you crappy vintage equipment, which I'm sure you love and will argue is just as good as all the stuff I'm talking about. Play for 20 or 30 years and see how you feel then.
I have just discovered this band.. Velvet Underground & Pixies are my favourite bands of all time. This is an amazing thing to discover at 30. Fantastic!!
fantastic band, i saw them support the sundays in manchester wayback in the 80's, recently saw damon and naomi in manchester, chatted to naomi, lovely women.
what with the shoe gaze revival going on i hope these guys are appreciated now....the music hasn't aged at all and sounds like it could have been recorded last week.
what chance could music ever have again if we think of it like that though
and galaxie is as good as I need them to be
the theory of dark flow states that our universe is moving at millions of miles per hour, in the gravity of something greater than itself, a multiverse of many. is there a universe where music still permeates the soul and not just the body? or is that universe beyond help as well?
agree he not got the best of voices, but believe me this stuff is sublime. listen to the studio albums for a more polished idea of how brilliant these guys (and girl)were.......
Any song that references watching Kojak is absolutely a classic! To the dude who talked about Naomi and his tongue is that anyway to talk to a beautiful talented lady?
I still remember when they appeared on MuchMusic (Canada's MTV) and had the misfortune to be interviewed by Erica Ehm, who was sometimes guilty of seeming doing little preparation.
She asked if they were deeply influenced by the Velvet Underground, and the whole band pretended not to know who that was, and Erica seemed to believe them. This was just after Fourth of July was out, with Here She Comes Now on the B-side, for goodness sake! Who did they learn it from, if not the Velvets, Erica?
This haunting and beautiful song is in top rotation on my iPod. Saw them perform twice in San Francisco at the Kennel Klub. I still have my day Glo T-shirt they sold on that tour.
@fusedsilica a comment that actually made me laugh audibly. these guys really were amazing weren't they? i listen to "tell me" everyday still.. i love on fire as a whole tho.. great highway driving album
I really want to put my tounge in Naomi's deepest and darkest places. Love Galaxie 5 for ever. I hold such a big place in my heart for this band. When I saw them Live play this song I died a little
