Moby Dick was not the originally planned book in this movie, Catcher In The Rye was, ( a lot more fitting, I think) but they could not secure the rights, so Moby Dick was the replacement.

Here's what I found in IMDb:
Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Moby Dick does not contain the word "Eskimo", but does contain "Esquimaux".
