Almost every movie that is nominated had great ratings from both critics and users. The only movie that doesn't deserve to be in there is Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. I agree that Drive should have took its place. I love Gosling and Levitt, but there performances weren't good enough to warrant a nominations.
I'm with you on The Artist. I hope it sweeps the show. Favorite movie of 2011, and one of my favorites of all time. Truly perfect in my eyes.
I agree with your notion for best picture: it should be based on postive reaction frrom critics and the audience. The Oscars have a lot of "politics" behind it. Look at what happen to "Citizen Kane" for best picture, I only seen "Midnight in Paris", while I did enjoy the film, I dont think it should have been nominated.
You're spot on about which films should be nominated, the mind of the academy never makes any sense. I'm also happy that Michelle Williams and Rooney Mara were up there but I can't take that category seriously without Tilda Swinton. And where's Michael Fassbender? It's always a pleasant surprise when an art film gets nominated so I'll be rooting for The Tree of Life and A Separation got a screenplay nod! It almost makes up for some of the mistakes.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Drive.. those got snubbed.. and they didn'T even nominate 10 movies for best picture.. they had only 9.. would it have been so hard to nominate one of the 2 movies ``
Shailene Woodley of the descendants got snubbed for Melissa McCarthy of bridesmaids, are you kidding me academy! And Where's 50/50? So disappointed by the oscar noms this year
I'm pissed that Harry Potter got snubbed for best picture as for David Yates for best director. No love for Andy Serkis either. Completely agree with you.
I completely, totally agree with your analysis of what Best Picture nominees should be. I was at least happy the past two years that great animated movies like UP and Toy Story 3 were nominated for Best Picture; I thought those two films were wholly deserving of nominations. I haven't seen Drive, 50 50, or TGWTDT (yet), but I totally agree that Harry Potter was deserving. It's ridiculous how not a single film in the series won an Oscar for ANYTHING, and that they were rarely nominated.
Agreed on the best picture snubs, this is why I'm glad we have the You reviewers awards. The oscars just keep getting more pathetic and pointless every year, ever since The Dark Knight was snubbed for best picture that's when I personally felt the oscars are irrelevant.
I agree with basically everything you've said, especially in terms of Best Picture. Why should a film people have been calling one of the worst most overhyped films of 2011 be nominated while films that have topped top 10s like Warrior, Drive, 50/50, Shame, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and The Ides of March get snubbed? They could have at least given Drive a Best Director or Best Supporting Actor nod. Not just toss it under the shaft with a sound mixing nod.
@FilmRecall Not to be a know-it-all, but E.T. was nominated for Best Picture, though it lost to Gandhi (which I haven't seen). But I would've loved for it to win. :)
Great analysis of best picture, well thought out. I haven't seen extremely loud and incredibly close yet so i'm not going to be biast and say it doesn't deserve it (even it's not well received with others), but I'm not disappointed with drive getting 1 nom and 50/50 getting 0, it would've been nice to have few noms for them at least. I'm one of the only 2 ppl on youtube who think that Tilda Swinton got snubbed for best actress. She deserves the award in my opinion and she got nothing!!

Why should we care about the Oscars anyway? It's a bunch of producers, directors and screenwriters giving awards to themselves.
themoviedoc 1 month ago
@themoviedoc The only good thing is that sometimes the Oscars highlight movies or performances which could be forgotten otherwise.

Andy Serkis was just...forgotten about!

Ryan goslings vote was split. Some voted for The ides of March others Drive and in the end he didn't have enough votes to be nominated in either.
