this takes me back about a million years or so... i was in kent and i went to see a school show and a young lass danced to this track... never forgot it... hope she's still dancing...
what is with the references to Jean Cocteau in Sylvian's songs? Orpheus, "the blood of a poet" lyric, and unreleated to Cocteau but Night Porter by Liliana Cavani. Was Sylvian just lifting artistic film titles?
Brilliant choice in Britain's great bassist Danny Thompson and I believe the great jazz trumpet player Kenny Wheeler. But all credit to Mr Sylvian.. a true poet!
Wow. Didn't know there was a video for this song. I just assumed there was not one made since DS seemed very concerned with shedding any imagery from his music at that time. I'm glad the record company made him make several videos for his first album. Videos like this don't get made very often. Thanks again for posting this clip.
did any one notice at the recent tour that things must be tight after the divorce hes still wearing his white shoes twenty years on ! class bloke and musical master
i listened to this song on my record soooo many times when i was studying...i feel like it is a part of me now......WOW this song is of a timeless beauty!!!
My favourite artist for over 25 years and probably the most underrated British artist of my generation. Thank you for this body of his work you have kindly shared and posted here.
Oh again bless people for posting this stuff. I bought this album on release as an eager teenager(ahem).I loved his voice and always thought he and Japan were criminally underated in the 80s , thank you for this.
thank you for saving this clip - for 20+ years I've always remembered the surreal moment when the sleeping(?) David is revealed as a cardboard cut-out
Argh! Yes, that is a bit more than a pity, actually... Yes, I seem to recall that I had "favorited" (favorite as a verb?!) a video you'd posted, and I saw that it had been removed. I believe it was Blackwater... anyhow, great to know others on YT who appreciate Sylvian. I've subscribed to stay updated on your posts.

Sylvian's Bruce Forsythian vocal timbre works well on this piece.

@mintybartlam Bruce Forsyth? No, I don't think so. David sounds more like Bryan Ferry.

I am listening to Brilliant Trees on my stereo at the moment.
I am feeling lost today and whenever I feel like this I always put on David Sylvian.
He has a way of speaking to my soul more louder than anything or anyone.
Thank You David for such spirit and meaning in your deluxe compisitions +

Superb. I remember watching this repeatedly on Betamax tape, recorded off TOTP.
I think Dave Lee Travis introduced the song that evening. He looked totally bemused by it all. (He would do wouldn't he).

Brilliant Trees as an album is a priceless jewel.

i have always loved japan and sylvian. they said that about ferry comparisions etc,but he was never that. frustratingly enigmatic and aloof maybe!
dermotoblong 3 years ago
I love the way he is often on the very edge of the melody, often only hinting at it or weaving in and out of it.
lucidreamboy 4 years ago 3
i think he's a great lyricist. makes astounding moves in a near perfect solo career.
i guess i am fan.
