OMG I've been trying to figure out who this song is for about three months! I heard it on the radio, but didn't hear who it was.... wouldn't have guessed Flogging Molly, but it's definently his voice. and 52 people in the world are officially stupid.
Been a flogging molly fan for ever talking i got "Side One Dummie" in vinyl old and this is really good yea its no like Devils Dance floor but its really good reguardless stop the QQ and go make an irish station on pandora if your really that distraught about it
I said this on the official video, and I'll say it here. I've heard the album, and it will be a suprise if it DOESN'T hit within the top 5 of the top 200. The entire album from start to finish is an epic masterpiece from the band. It's by far the hardest hitting FM album to date, and perhaps one of the angriest. ALOT of heart, soul and effort went into this album, and it shines true. To people doubting, please, doubt no longer
I think this song is great, its nice to see bands try different sound, that way you don't feel like you are buying the same thing over and over. I've seen them a couple of times live and they are amazing, and would get another chance to see them on the 31st of May.
Ughh I hate these bitchy fans of any band who even attempts to do something slightly different. I'm certainly not suggesting this is better than old Flogging Molly but how is this a bad song? I don't get it.
I saw them last night in Austin too. I agree, this song freaking rocked live. People really need to get over the "omg he doesn't sound irish enough" mentality and let them go in a bit of a diff direction for once. Give me a freaking break. This is GREAT music. And this song in particular is amazing live.
This is Flogging Molly and to be honest they haven't changed a thing. Its just like all of their other songs, from the heart. They sing with passion and their songs are true to themselves. Plus they want to bring awareness to Ireland's horrible state right now which is their home.
For you saying 'This isn't Flogging Molly', you couldn't be more wrong. This is the band doing what they want to do. Their on their own label and can write what they want.
Saw them live a few weeks back. EVERY song they played off the new album was just as good as their old stuff. Sorry the band isn't sticking to the specific mold everyone wants to put them in.
I agree with the dislikes to be honest. I like pretty much everything FM does and what I've heard from the live recordings the upcoming album will be pretty awesome as well. But this song just doesn't do it, it doesn't have the FM feel to it and sound like generic American punk.
@abacacus From what I heard at their concert, this is the only song on the new album that is really simple like this. It was also the song that he talked about in the most detail. The simple lyrics are made up for by the meaning.
Not their best by a long shot. Surely with a new single, you want to show folks that the album is gonna be balls-to-the-wall fantastic. This does not fill me with hope and joy.
Definitely has a more "mainstream" feel than the usual FM. That's not necessarily a goo or bad thing, just different. Besides, a mediocre Flogging Molly song is still better than 98% of what's out there right now.
WTF is with all the dislikes? This isn't exactly a hit, I just happen to be here from a "good music" list from a local radio stations website, and I think the song is definitely better than all the other shit people listen to.
@slwsteven12 Just saw em in Austin last night. Hadn't heard this song before then and it was amazing live. I'm seeing a lot of people here agree with me, FM needs to get more of that live sound into the album on this one.
I do like this. However, just a note: the other new songs do tend to sound like their older work. Saw 'em live at Nashville; they were as excellent as ever.
I think this song is good, the live version is unbelievable, and the new songs they played for the Chicago show was much more likened to Floggign Molly, think about some of Float, wasn't exactly normal Flogging Molly? still good though
I wasn't exactly bedazzled the first time i heard this, but i saw them in indy the other night, and the live version of this song was tremendously acceptable.
Yea this isnt there normal sound, Hope rest is better. @whoever said sounds like he phoned it in. It is released almost 3 months away so they might improve this sound, It could be the sound quality of whoever loaded it or it could have been released like that just because they dont want the best quality out until its release. Ok song but by far there best.
Don't miss them, love them. Look up: So Sail On (ballad), Saints and Sinners, and Speed of Darkness. Preferably the Tampa Shows. They are from the new album.
Sounds American as hell. You can throw any amount of Irish folk instruments in the song you want, but without the authentic Irish vocals, it's not Flogging Molly. It sounds like Dave phoned this song in... :(
I heard this on the radio for the first time yesterday. I didn't believe it when I heard the DJ say that it was Flogging Molly. It's not that I'm against change, because I understand that bands evolve, it's that I simply do not hear Flogging Molly in this song. Where did this come from? Anyone?
I admit I'm kinda confused by this one. It more or less sounds like something other bands starts with getting more virtious until they reach a higher level such as Swagger or Float (not saying the instruments sound lame or I decide such by counting the number of different intruments :D) for Flogging Molly.
This entire composition is so...simple. I don't realy dislike that but I hope they've just made an experiment here and not an entire album of this kind.
I'm not terribly impressed, however I've been a Flogging Molly fan since my college days back in 99-00. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because they're traditionally quite awesome. Gotten drunk many a times listening to them, great memories of days gone by now that I'm getting to be an old fart.
@palkian90 no, but a lot of people seriously mind that somehow his accent has grown so american where it used to be more irish, and to some extent the entire composition being more like they looked at Dropkick murphys the Real Mckenzies the Briggs Blood or Whiskey ETC. rising in popularity and hoping to latch on by shifting into that direction
but indeed for the record I like the song but I too am not thoroughly impressed, I even wondered if it wasn't someone else singing for a while
Man, FM is just disappointing lately. Float didn't grab me at all, and now it seems they are going further down that path...this sounds way too squeaky-studio clean, where is my dirty, lively fiddle, accordion, grungy electric guitar solos? Bummer.
yeah this song is Not meant to be a dace, or happy song listen to the Lyrics its protest song i think its good catchy, and bands can change there is never any good or bad to it just different you like Irish Music only listen to paddy and the rats there close to flogging molly, but i think that music thru history was meant first to send a message
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but do you guys actually follow Flogging Molly? Recent interviews have stated that this song was given a MoTown feel to it intentionally since it's about the fall of the American Economy, especially Detroit where Dave and Bridget live. The Speed of Darkness is the name of the new album, and both Dennis and Bob have said that everyone hating has no need to hate once it drops.
Also, they open up with the song "The Speed of Darkness" on the Green 17 Tour, and there are videos of it here on Youtube. Sure, they're most likely recorded on an iPhone or Droid, but you can hear it good, almost perfectly even. Classic Flogging Molly.
I don't mean to be so blunt, but this song sucks compared to their older stuff. They're starting to gear more towards alternative and straying away from traditional folk music. D: I hope the entire album isn't like this.
Yeah, I've been listening to these guys for seven years now... It seems the best CD's were in their earlier days. I'm not saying their newer ones are bad, I'm just saying their older ones were better. In order.....
1.Swagger
2.Within a Mile of Home
3. Whiskey on a Sunday
4. Drunken Lullabies
5. Alive Behind a Green Door
6. Live at the Greek Theater
7. Float
8.? judging by this song... Don't Shut em Down..... But who knows....
This song is way too modernized... be yourselves FM!! <3 always
while most comments are correct here i feel that flogging molly has turned into a bit of a bland, repeated typical irish band. they used to have so much attitude, spunk, flare and style. It now seems as though they're a bit burnt out, and, at least in this song, lack their old creative genius.
This is very disappointing. Hopefully it's not representative of the rest of the album. At this point, I'm looking forward to the new Dropkick Murphys album, and that's saying a lot. Flogging Molly is my fourth favorite band of all time!
did anybody probably notice the change in the sound could be something they wanted to make you feel like what the lyrics are saying? like "oh i feel like the old days were better, this is so modern, i dont want this to sound like it... oh shit they feel the same but thats just what they were singing"
this song is still classic flogging molly. It may not sound like it when you first hear it, but when you listen to it a few more times it begins to grow on you. I didn't think it sounded very flogging molly when I first heard it but I listened to it again and changed my opinion.
The lyrics are cool im really disappointed this sounds nothing like th flogging Molly I kno hopefully th album will be better look forward for ur tour
maybe its a marketing move... release the absolute worst flogging molly song in history first, then the rest of the album will sound WAY better in contrast... I hope its a marketing move...... please be a marketing move.
The music and lyrics are flat and not up to Dave King's standards in my opinion. If they want to change their sound, that's cool, even if I don't like it, but the lyrics have never been anything short of poetry in the past! (excluding, of course, the drinking-style songs which are a different creature all their own) These lyrics seem cliche and uninspired and will cease to be relevant a few years down the line.
hmm not too fond of it myself it seems too commercial almost in a pop rock sound. im going to give the album a try tho and hope that the rest of the songs are better.. i guess every band goes through changes. i like this band and hope that they haven't lost their edge:)
It's like everything that makes flogging molly unique takes a back seat in this song, making it sorta bland. I hope that it will grow on me but I'm not a fan of what i'm hearing right now =/
I wouldnt say this is a bad direction for FM it is different but Float was a much more mellow album then the previous albums. It also make me pleased that this starts to get the energy back.
There seems to be on every FM album a song that is an ode to the past and then there is a protest song of some sort. This seems to be the protest song of the album like Requiem for a Dieing Song, Screaming at the Wailing Wall, and, to a lesser degree, Rebels of the Sacred Heart were.
ive been a huge fan of all their stuff and it sounds different but its just a small taste of the new album, damn, its not like this is the only song, you guys are so simple minded
I'm still in shock because it's different...not different as in nothing I've heard before, different as in...something i have heard before. Flogging Molly was different. Not diggin this song. Now I'm an undecided Album buyer.
Decent message, but super cheesy lyrics and it sounds like they are trying to sound The Offspring or Green Day. The chorus feels musically weak and sounds like some one-hit-wonder band from the 90s that I can't think of.
I don't mind change, but change can't always be good. If you like it, good for you. I'll go listen to the Pogues and Dubliners.
Look, bands change. Flogging Molly do what they feel like, not what is going to make them more money. I also think the old days were better, but if you want a band that makes the same kind of music for 50 years long, go and listen to more commerial groups :)
@palkian90 I'm a long time FM fan as well. all I meant by that was I think it's going to be more slow songs. I just miss the old style of flogging molly. you know, the stuff you can mosh to.
@CasinoRoyaleFan yes... and didn't say you said float was bad..... gettin defensive there...
also FM needs to be separated from punk as much as possible. punk is awful. FM is talented, unique and sings about valid things- thus, is not punk and never was. this song is sounding too punk for my taste.
@tesla311 obviously you've never heard their earlier stuff or gone to a concert of theirs if you think they're not punk...and on the subject, lay off that style, right? punk's amazing...and also touches on valid things. ever listen to The Clash? that's punk. The Ramones? borderline punk. Dropkick Murphys? most assuredly punk.
this new song sounds too mainstream and waaay too separate from their older, much more popular stuff.
@CasinoRoyaleFan you just listed a bunch of bands that i fuckin hate. and there's nothing that FM has done that i don't know about. i'm going to them again in march too, i'm fuckin pumped. i don't know about you but when i listen to them, i hear fiddles, mandolins, banjos, whistles, accordions and acoustics. not very punkish to me. i hate how they're at the center of the venn diagram of punk and celt fans. anyone who says dropkick murphys are like FM deserves a swift kick in the balls.
@tesla311 look. I hear those things too, but obviously in a different way than you. I've seen them in concert many times as well.
I wasn't looking to start a flame war with anyone, but you obviously have some issues you need to talk about, and I hope one of your friends can help you, because I'm done.
all I did was post a generic comment on the video, and you started to insult my way of thinking, which is not really ok with me in the slightest. please take your rage elsewhere. thank you.
@tesla311 Dude, you just told him that everything that he listens to is crap and that his arguments are invalid, wich they are not. What did you expect, him agreeing everything you say? But that's not the main-point. You do know that Flogging Molly is punk? Just a sub-genre of punk, known as Irish Folk Punk(Some Rock elements there too), don't talk about things that you dont know about. Now, let the flaming begin!(Im completly at CasinoRoyaleFans side, you took everything he said too personally)
Whatever you may think of this, it's just a taster of what is coming. Who knows, the rest of the album might blow us away?! Also, the mixing and mastering sounds rushed or half-finished, even with the youtube-crap-compression (fiddle, banjo, accordion is way back in the mix). In a way it's like judging a whole house just from seeing a bedroom with no wallpaper and no floor.
I don't care what they do, this still is good.

This is very disappointing. Hopefully it's not representative of the rest of the album. At this point, I'm looking forward to the new Dropkick Murphys album, and that's saying a lot. Flogging Molly is my fourth favorite band of all time!
rawkfist208 1 year ago
did anybody probably notice the change in the sound could be something they wanted to make you feel like what the lyrics are saying? like "oh i feel like the old days were better, this is so modern, i dont want this to sound like it... oh shit they feel the same but thats just what they were singing"
jamahl 1 year ago
Flogging Molly got me hook, line and sinker with this song :D
IvegotDeadMemories90 1 year ago
this song is still classic flogging molly. It may not sound like it when you first hear it, but when you listen to it a few more times it begins to grow on you. I didn't think it sounded very flogging molly when I first heard it but I listened to it again and changed my opinion.

Jesus Christ, is this Dave? I don't recognise his voice! But still, it's a good song.

I could hear their sound changing on the last album, but this is horrible. If the whole thing is like this I'm not evin buying it.

Catchy, but if I heard this without knowing it was FM I probably wouldn't realise. Shame.

They don't even sound Irish. This is like Dave King, and the rest of the band lost all respect for their old selves... DAMN.
clash5032 1 year ago
maybe its a marketing move... release the absolute worst flogging molly song in history first, then the rest of the album will sound WAY better in contrast... I hope its a marketing move...... please be a marketing move.

@philosojuggalo I saw them last night, they played at least 5 new songs, and I assure you the rest is a more traditional sound for them.

@philosojuggalo
This is what they always do. Keane did the same thing with Perfect Symetry.

@philosojuggalo I heard this one live in Rochester....it's a LOT more processed here. Live it fit.

I prefer near-Metal Angry Dave, or tortured exile Dave. I dunno, something about this is just off.

Songs sucks. Period. If this is where the band is headed then my advice is to stop while you are ahead.

Hmmm... This track doesn't bode well :/
The music and lyrics are flat and not up to Dave King's standards in my opinion. If they want to change their sound, that's cool, even if I don't like it, but the lyrics have never been anything short of poetry in the past! (excluding, of course, the drinking-style songs which are a different creature all their own) These lyrics seem cliche and uninspired and will cease to be relevant a few years down the line.
TheSidewalkCipher 1 year ago
hmm not too fond of it myself it seems too commercial almost in a pop rock sound. im going to give the album a try tho and hope that the rest of the songs are better.. i guess every band goes through changes. i like this band and hope that they haven't lost their edge:)

I think you guys are hating, this is a decent new sound, granted, its no Salty Dog, but I love it and hope they play it when I see them on the 18th

It's like everything that makes flogging molly unique takes a back seat in this song, making it sorta bland. I hope that it will grow on me but I'm not a fan of what i'm hearing right now =/

If you really want the correct lyrics, add "--aaaa" at the end of each line. :P

A little to "pop" for me..i hope theres more of an irish kick to it in their other songs on the album.

Two long years of waiting and this is it? Well, still need to give the whole album a chance.

It's not about change or not, it's about good songs. This song is not very good. Hopefully the rest of the album will be better.
BillieBong420 1 year ago
I accept that bands evolve overtime, but i hope they don't make more songs like this no offense. Me thinks they'll lose some fans.
mugen1333 1 year ago
I wouldnt say this is a bad direction for FM it is different but Float was a much more mellow album then the previous albums. It also make me pleased that this starts to get the energy back.
There seems to be on every FM album a song that is an ode to the past and then there is a protest song of some sort. This seems to be the protest song of the album like Requiem for a Dieing Song, Screaming at the Wailing Wall, and, to a lesser degree, Rebels of the Sacred Heart were.

I'm still in shock because it's different...not different as in nothing I've heard before, different as in...something i have heard before. Flogging Molly was different. Not diggin this song. Now I'm an undecided Album buyer.

Lyrics in the description are wrong in a few places, afaict:
"defences are the only thing spilled" -> "defences are the only things built"
"sound of the times" -> "sign of the times"
"buildings take opposure in slumber" -> "buildings decomposing in slumber"
"There's a riot ahead" -> "There's a riot on hand"
I also *think* the chorus starts out as "Yeah, this is life"
beantmt 1 year ago
@beantmt Thanks! Changed the lyrics :)
rsrwizardmag 1 year ago
Decent message, but super cheesy lyrics and it sounds like they are trying to sound The Offspring or Green Day. The chorus feels musically weak and sounds like some one-hit-wonder band from the 90s that I can't think of.
I don't mind change, but change can't always be good. If you like it, good for you. I'll go listen to the Pogues and Dubliners.
beantmt 1 year ago
his eyes they closed, and his last breath spoke, etc. that was a REALLY good song....but this, wtf?
MrCaptainDouglas 1 year ago
This doesnt even sound like flogging molly..... Dave, what were you thinking?
MrCaptainDouglas 1 year ago
Look, bands change. Flogging Molly do what they feel like, not what is going to make them more money. I also think the old days were better, but if you want a band that makes the same kind of music for 50 years long, go and listen to more commerial groups :)

@CasinoRoyaleFan Float was amazing.
This is awesome too but still different. And I speak as a long-time FM fan.
palkian90 1 year ago 3
@palkian90 I'm a long time FM fan as well. all I meant by that was I think it's going to be more slow songs. I just miss the old style of flogging molly. you know, the stuff you can mosh to.
CasinoRoyaleFan 1 year ago
@CasinoRoyaleFan i wish. float was incredible. this song doesn't sound very good...
tesla311 1 year ago
@tesla311 I didn't say float was bad, did I. I just miss the old style of Flogging Molly, and the mosh songs. I mean, where's the punk gone?
CasinoRoyaleFan 1 year ago
@CasinoRoyaleFan yes... and didn't say you said float was bad..... gettin defensive there...
also FM needs to be separated from punk as much as possible. punk is awful. FM is talented, unique and sings about valid things- thus, is not punk and never was. this song is sounding too punk for my taste.
tesla311 1 year ago
@tesla311 obviously you've never heard their earlier stuff or gone to a concert of theirs if you think they're not punk...and on the subject, lay off that style, right? punk's amazing...and also touches on valid things. ever listen to The Clash? that's punk. The Ramones? borderline punk. Dropkick Murphys? most assuredly punk.
this new song sounds too mainstream and waaay too separate from their older, much more popular stuff.
don't go bashing music styles, please.
CasinoRoyaleFan 1 year ago
@CasinoRoyaleFan you just listed a bunch of bands that i fuckin hate. and there's nothing that FM has done that i don't know about. i'm going to them again in march too, i'm fuckin pumped. i don't know about you but when i listen to them, i hear fiddles, mandolins, banjos, whistles, accordions and acoustics. not very punkish to me. i hate how they're at the center of the venn diagram of punk and celt fans. anyone who says dropkick murphys are like FM deserves a swift kick in the balls.
tesla311 1 year ago
@tesla311 look. I hear those things too, but obviously in a different way than you. I've seen them in concert many times as well.
I wasn't looking to start a flame war with anyone, but you obviously have some issues you need to talk about, and I hope one of your friends can help you, because I'm done.
all I did was post a generic comment on the video, and you started to insult my way of thinking, which is not really ok with me in the slightest. please take your rage elsewhere. thank you.
CasinoRoyaleFan 1 year ago
@CasinoRoyaleFan rage? um... alright then. some people just like being offended, i guess.
tesla311 1 year ago
@tesla311 Dude, you just told him that everything that he listens to is crap and that his arguments are invalid, wich they are not. What did you expect, him agreeing everything you say? But that's not the main-point. You do know that Flogging Molly is punk? Just a sub-genre of punk, known as Irish Folk Punk(Some Rock elements there too), don't talk about things that you dont know about. Now, let the flaming begin!(Im completly at CasinoRoyaleFans side, you took everything he said too personally)
Jurmo777 1 year ago
@Jurmo777 thanks random internet douche.
tesla311 1 year ago
Whatever you may think of this, it's just a taster of what is coming. Who knows, the rest of the album might blow us away?! Also, the mixing and mastering sounds rushed or half-finished, even with the youtube-crap-compression (fiddle, banjo, accordion is way back in the mix). In a way it's like judging a whole house just from seeing a bedroom with no wallpaper and no floor.
Be patient.
Btw, check out the band SIR REG.
