I think it was more the disease Itachi was suffering from was what finally killed him. What he had planed was to die at Sasuke's feet not by his hand. So that way Sasuke would get the M. Sharingan without having to kill. But the reason he died there was cause his body was complitely worn out by there fight and his illness took him. He knew he was dying almost the whole series. Which is why I also am sure that Itachi was trying to rush Sasuke's development so he would make it before his death.
