Riccardo Chailly is a truly genius. What a deliciously and masterly conducted. Neill has the "fiamma" of a big tenor , with the perfect weight for Arnold and very suitable for this role
Neill does have an exvellent instrument. He does have a tendency to sing a little too much in the throat, sometimes, I would agree, but his voice is in general very fine.
@Cantormatis I think you missed the mark - he is a superb singer, carrying on the traditions and skill of Schmidt, Tauber, Bjorling, DiStefano, Konya, and Wunderlich. All the fans of Corelli and Pavorotti should pay attention to the ring in his top notes.
@orovalleydude This particular performance of Mr. Neill does indeed have its merits. However, I would not compare him to any of the singers you mentioned, who sounded nothing like each other and had very different levels of technical ability. Tauber was a superb singer, but would not nor could have sung this; DiStefano had a great instrument but many faults in his technique; Bjoerling was perhaps the only singer who in his prime could have done this nearly flawlessly in the original French.
@Cantormatis I understand your point. Tauber had a great voice, but he did not have the high notes for this aria. With my 30+ years of training with Horne's first teacher and the inheritor of his studio, I think that it is interesting how Mr. Neill handles the high notes. Fans and experts that enjoy Corelli and Pavorotti should listen to Mr. Neill.
I couldn't agree with Operaphile more. Maestro Chailly is right on the money here. Not frantic or reckless, but incredibly exciting. Friends have told me that as of 2009, Mr. Neill is singing as good as ever. The last I heard him was over 10 years ago as the Duke in Baltimore with Mark Rucker as Rigoletto, and it was quite an evening!!! Both these guys have TOP.
Superb!!!! I have the utmost respect for any tenor who can pull this one off - it has to be the toughest aria in the tenor repertoire!! How recent is this recording? I haven't heard much from him since his wonderful singing in Verdi's "Oberto" under Marriner with Sam Ramey.
What a joy too to hear this conducted intelligently by maestro Chailly - not the ridiculous conducting by Muti!
oggi,domani, sempre, W Rossini !
