Emo music simply refers to music that has a deep emotional meaning, and it's easy to see that MCR has many songs that carry strong emotional lyrics, so yes some songs of theirs can correctly be classified as emo/alternative. But yes they are mainly punk/alternative. As for Gerard being mad it was about people automatically grouping MCR with the emo style just because of the bands appearance.
