I know your comment is really old but I feel the need to reply. I always thought that too and then today I was listening to it and it made perfect sense. I think it's from the perspective of a dying soldier in WWII. With Rita as his pinup and he's staring at the white moon as he's dying. I think at least.

@Stephane333 It's probably a mix of the two. It seems to tell a story to me, but it could also have very personal references in the lyrics that no one understands but Jack and Meg. They did both have a very emotional reaction to the song in UGWNL.
