Animatronics are the worst part about haunted houses. I mean, sure they set the mood and sometimes when they are thrust at you, they make you jump, but it's the actors chasing you with machetes and chainsawws that make haunted houses amazing.

I've been to a great deal of haunted houses and the scariest ones were just dark. Not knowing where you're going, a good sound effects track and some well placed jump scares go a long way. Elaborate sets and props are eye candy, they aren't scary.
