These videos you have posted carry tremendous historical significance. They provide a glimpse into the world of October 1973. Everybody needs to know something about this!
I enjoyed this alot....thank you. I believe all animals go to heaven. along with mine, I'd sure like to see him! what a great horse. I wish I could have known this great horse. how proud they all must have been. To have loved him...eddie the groomer loved him so much too. I liked what I read about him saying good mornin and puuling his tounge and soon every moring during his race days he would put his tounge out when eddie past him
@ihatenoodles Likewise :) In Australia a fairly decent horse used to race under the name of Miss Secretariat a fair few years back. After watching the film and perusing the YouTube clips, no horse should ever be compared to Secretariet, not even in name. What a wonderful animal. Big Red smashed them in the Belmont Stakes like the freak he was. There was and will be no parrell to his greatness. I hope his record is never bettered. RIP champ!. Awesome video cf1970. Well done :)
...(cont'd) Penny Chenery Tweedy was a wonderful owner as well as a classy lady, sharing her magnificent and unequaled Secretariat with us all, and for continuing to "blow his horn" to keep the memories of him alive.
This reminds me of the incredible popularity of Zenyatta (esp since her win in the '09 BCC) among racegoers, the mainstream media, and the general public. It has seemed so unique that ordinary people know the names of Team Zenyatta, from her hotwalkers to her owners and everyone in between. Yet here we see nearly the same type of acknowledgment of Secretariat's team, displayed for his fans nearly 40 years ago, thanks to his owner... (cont'd)
i just think the the whole concept of secratariat "s story was genial from what he was to the people involved in his life, from the groom to his owner penny, his story really captivates everyone! bravo ! if only america could follow on this example of triumph and unity, we would win the big race ourselves.
@battousaiblade he got that temperament mainly fm Princequillo, his maternal grandsire, also the strength and endurance he had. The video of him here is breathtaking, especially when Charlie slows him down after workout. Notice how he whinnies and shakes his head, dances a little, then looks over straight at camera.
@battousaiblade they say Secretariat had the calm intelligent temperament of his maternal grandsire, Princequillo, sire of Somethingroyal, Secretariat's dam, fm whom he got the large heart gene.
Wonderful documentary! I was 8 when Secretariat showed the world his greatness. My mother and grandmother absolutely loved this horse. I'll never forget watching his races and seeing the 2 women I loved most crying with such happiness. Thank You Secretariat!
As an American of Canadian descent - my grandparents were Canadians who moved to Boston in the 1920's - I'm delighted that Secretariat's last race was at Woodbine. AND this is probably the best documentary anyone has seen actually showing Secretariat or any horse who might enter a race in Canada or anywhere else. They don't all make money, the horses, not the money Secretariat made, and those who don't perform face an unpleasant fate, I'm just saying....
@littlescratchykitty it was wonderful footage. I love Secretariat and think he is the most beautiful horse ever but Man O' War has stolen my heart and soul.
Secretariat's pony was named Billy Silver. They are used primarily to calm horses before races, but also for companionship off the track. However, if you watch the 1973 Belmont post parade, you'll notice that even though Billy Silver was nearby, Secretariat didn't need a pony that day; he was raring to run and full of himself, which is exactly what horsemen/women want to see. Ponies are males because females would be distracting and dangerous due to a colt's strong sex drive. Hope that helps.
@SherryBucher Well, thank you kindly, Sherry. I'm certainly not a hands-on horseman, but in my humble opinion, I'm hoping my statement makes logical sense.
Thanks you so very much for this great video - I was pretty young when I saw Secretariat race and have never forgotten him. How nice to hear the commentary from his trainer/groom,etc about his nice termperment too. I know he died young (17?) due to laminitis - did this develop because of his years of racing or did he have a later injury? He was at Caliborn Farm - did Mrs. Tweedy sell him - or stable him but keeping ownership?
"Not only was he the only horse to win the TC in 25 years, but it was his way of going that stirred people's hearts." Each race won in spectacular fashion, unique and thrilling, in the WAY he did it. Never again...
This is my favorite professionally produced documentary on Secretariat. It's beautifully understated and mostly just lets the horse "speak" for himself.
Thanks- this is rare & heartwarming and-- just the best. Watching Big Red is like watching Royalty- You captured this video - don't know where or how, but the first time I ever saw anything like it...
Wow, I humbly thank you for your very kind comment. Reiterating my above statement, it's truly how I feel; stop by the many other fine channels if you haven't already; we really have collectively collected a treasure trove of superb racing videos, past and present. It's also a been a pleasure getting to know so many fine people.
That is so kind of you to say, but I am merely one of many excellent posters along with my friends gfn02, Kierkegaard73, partymanners, Dingerz, and others. I'm honored to be a small part of what I feel is a terrific horse racing community here; it's been a real joy in my life.
I am more than a little envious of your meeting Secretariat in person! You are so very fortunate to interacted with him so closely. I can only dream!
Yes, and that was just going around the "dogs" used to protect the inside of the course. Had Secretariat been allowed to scrape the paint, his time would have been even quicker.
You're welcome. Although this is just one piece of plenty of testimony to that fact, I think it speaks loudly of Secretariat and the legend he has become.
My favorite clips are 1:46, 2:04 (Billy Silver is awesome), 3:13, 3:42-3:56 (amazing), and of course, 6:35-7:13 (all I can say is WOW).
Yes, indeed. Mr. Edward Plunket Taylor was a very highly respected man. Being the knowledgeable horseman that he was, he knew and recognized that Secretariat at his best would not have been beaten, and humbly, yet eloquently stated his considerable opinion. I couldn't possibly agree with him more.
Do you by chance have the Belmont post race interview with Ron Turcotte where he is asked if Funny Cide should be compared to Secretariat should he win the triple crown?
