i was fortunate enough to be in tokyo 3 times for work. each time for a 2 month stay. these crows are crazy. especially when there are several, and you are alone... the eyeball you - it is rather unnerving. and when they're hungry, they will lift open or knock over plastic trash bins, and make a real mess. they can get quite large as well, sometimes as large as a good sized dog. and they are not shy, and noisy as hell.... ah, tokyo. it's not all just cocaine and flashing lights...
Varmint hunters recognize that they are exceptionally intelligent and are tough to hunt. They post scouts high while the others feast on the ground. Hunters know that if you silently kill the scout, the others will not fly away. I photograph them, using hunting skills but could never kill one or any bird. There is a reason that they can survive almost anywhere here in the U.S. I have a prey caller that I use crow calls on and I can get a murder really excited and curious. Cool birds...
I don't think it matters how smart these crows try to show that they are, how much japanese they learn or how culturally accustomed they get ... they will never be accepted into the Japanese society. In the end, in Japan, they will always be considered ... gaijin.
Lovely smart birds God bless them :)
