REQUEST YOUR POST OFFICE CLERK STAMP THE CLOSED SEAM OF YOUR ENVELOPE A BUNCH OF TIMES, THEREBY CREATING A FOOLPROOF INK SEAL DOWN ALONG THE SEAM OF YOUR MEDIA MAIL.
I'VE DONE THIS FOR ORIGINAL SCREENPLAYS, IT WORKS!!
MY LAWYER INSPECTED THE ENVELOPES, HE AGREED THAT SEAM STAMPING IS ADMISSIBLE IN COURT SHOULD A COPYRIGHT DISPUTE ARISE...
HERE IN JAPAN, YOU CAN HAVE THE POST OFFICE SEAL THE SEAM WITH A STAMP PRESSED INTO A BLOB OF RED EPOXY THAT HARDENS IN MINUTES!
Concerning cost: you can always send a collection of songs for the cost of a single song. Downside may be if you change one of the songs and want to copyright it separately, then I'm not sure what becomes of the collection. Shouldn't matter though; you'll just have two versions of one of the songs copyrighted. In any every, it's got to be a better way of protecting your music. Cheaper too!
hi. i just want to say that you are by fare the best of the best when it cams to tutorials. i am sorry about my mistakes i am not god at ratting. i just want to say that you. and thank you for the videos they are very god.
Wouldn't uploading your song to YouTube give you a similar type of proof if someone comes along later and claims they wrote it? The stats they log would be pretty hard to falsify or alter. I guess none of this helps if a band-mate says s/he wrote the song;)

@cromag327 Yup...I went to LA and met with a music lawyer and asked about this...he laughed when it was brought up. Won't hold up in court...just do what he said in regards to BMI or ASCAP. That's a guaranteed copyright. Takes a little while to process though.
Anytime you create something and it is in tangible form, you already have a copyright, but, when it comes time for someone to prove that they own the rights to their music..then that is where the official copyright registration comes in.
This is an URBAN LEGEND. It may work in some other countries, but in the U.S. it offers you NO copyright-style protection. (For details, go to Snopes [dot] com and search for "Poor Man's Copyright".)
Please check out these things before you go telling people to do them!
@zeppy13131 I read it and I see what you mean, but my method goes beyond "Easily Circumvented" post mark and uses Registered mail which creates a legal document between the sender and the post office. As one of my subscribers suggested, go the extra step and use Registered Certified mail for an extra level of documentation.
I did give the disclaimer and I'll say it again. I'm not a lawyer, I'm just a guy who knows a trick.
@swyitch Great information, which can be helpful in the meantime before one actually gets an official copyright. As far as disclaimers before giving out legal advice...that is always a good idea..but, I would say it is very obvious that what Lewin is doing is to give useful information, and not heavy legal advice, as he said in the video that this is not technically copyrighting, but a tip to help protect yourself...sort of like a consumer protection tip from someone with real-life experience.
Make sure it's Registered and Certified. When it's certified delivery, it makes it easier for the post office to verify because it's documented in two separate registers - one outbound and the other a dated delivery signature with your name on it.
A way easier way and the way I do it, go to myfreecopyright {dot} com. You should annotate that, it's great and they provide you with an MCN and image to put on your website. This method works however as you said it's not actually copyrighting. If you are creative like me it's easy to get lazy and not use said method for every of your 10 or so songs a day. Great vid, thumbs up!
This is a smart idea.

isn't posting your song on youtube copywriting it cus they've got dates and everything, as to when it was uploaded?
11100sam 4 months ago
@11100sam yeah but there's still no official way to prove that someone else didn't post that same song on an earlier date on some other website.

A poor mans copyright is very shaky legally...let's just say 'You will get what you pay for'. Be careful.
