European countries were once quite homogene and now there are ethnic tensions in most major cities. Asian societies which are still more homogene like Japan or Korea seem to be doing better.

In any case, the bias of the media can be much better explained in terms beyond left and right, and limiting yourself to that mindset ensures you only see the tree and not the forest, so to speak.
Liberal = left winger, promotes social liberalism esp re family, promotes internationalism, seeks State centralisation and comprehensive State services
Conservative = right winger, promotes social conservatism, promotes national borders and national sovereignty, seeks to minimize State involvement
Those are pretty accurate definitions IMO, and there's still such a thing as distinctly liberal/conservative policy if you cut through the BS.
