Toronto on the opening night of their North American tour (my 4th time seeing them). They can still put on a great show, especially the unhearlded Malcolm Holmes on percussion!
@Raddlesby I believe the original was "orphan on a way" meaning along a roadside. They've also used "offer on a wave" & a couple of other variations from the original lyrics.
3/11/11 at the Crofoot in Pontiac, MI! Fabulous show! I was front and center and couldn't breathe when they played this. Thank you so much for a lovely and wonderful evening.
Saw them on Monday 3/7/11 (Boston). Incredible show at an intimate venue filled to capacity. Everyone was dancing and singing along -- those of us who were fans from the good 80s days and new fans from this generation. OMD still sounds the same as in those days. AWESOME TALENT. A memorable evening !
This is the first-ever "pop" track I remember hearing. Beautiful - and WHAT a woman the real Joan was. Her fate makes me ashamed to be English. Although she was burned at the stake, legend has it that her heart remained unburned. Bless her.
i agree. john fox b4 ultravox tubeway army. all good. i do think the best track of that era has to be the associates. party fears 2. think its light yrs away from anything else. even by today's standards.
Brimham Rocks ~ and Fountains Abbey !! ~ eeh lad there's nowhere like Yorkshire! Didn't these lads start out in a club opposite the Cavern Club in Liverpool? 'Architecture And Morality' ~ Brilliant album ~ still play it!
SORRY...can't say in english...but this song touch me like a ??????? i know NO WORD for THIS FEELING!!!!
I'm 48, and I was there, in the early 1980s that is. And I wore jumpers like that, and yes, kitted by my granny, and my mother, when she had the time from nagging my dad...
Oh, the good old days. But glad to see the snow back, to remind and attitude adjust peoples mind, of good ol' Mother Nature rules us, at the end of the day.
Cheers. Time people knitted more, and made their own clothes - it is very therapeutic, even if the end result is bit ummm! : )
What do you think of the Dazzle Ships album after Architecture and Morality one this track is from? Well under-rated is Dazzle Ships. There is a full set of vids on youtube of its tracks, well not vids exactly, just the music. It's epic.
what is so good about this song is the intrumentals are so prominant which so many eightys songs shared. not held together by beat or cheesy snares just epic electronic music which was still early in its infancy ,yet used with such genius than it had any right to.
This song and the whole 80's synth electro era was absolutely epic.I was so fortunate to have been in my mid teens in the early 80's when the likes of Visage, Yazoo, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk etc were leading the way and dragging us out of the conventional and musically staid 1970's. Long live Moog Emulaters, Linn Machines and any other form of synthetic sound production. To quote a Yazoo track from their album Upstairs at Erics " Goodbye Seventies" !!!
@cyberdyne11 Can you believe the contrived, corporate pap people are calling electro and synth-pop/music now? I mean seriously? It's such a slap in the face to a creative movement of music with brilliant craftsmen, who were TRUE lovers and pioneers of electronic music and very cutting edge for their time. There is absolutely minuscule soul and creativity in today's stuff. Why do they compare it?
@cyberdyne11 The main melody of this song is played on a Mellotron. Unmistakably a Mellotron - that haunting strings sound (probably enhanced with loads of reverb). And that instrument was popular in the 60's - 70's.
Ironically, this track was probably the last time the Mellotron was used, until a resurgence in its popularity happened with the Britpop era in the mid 90's.
@neil73 Mellotron sampled into an Emulator, I imagine. You couldn't do some of the changes that quick on an original Mellotron - all tapes and springs.
I am nearly 22 years old and I think this is a good music. Also, I hate all the new shit that comes out nowadays. I wish I was born at least 10 years before I was born. Am I the only one like this here?
I completely understand you. I'm 43, and was from 13 to 23 during 80's. The music those days was awesome. Sadly, the things started to change in 90's.
@MaruiKaladbolg At 10 years older you would have born in 1978, which would still make you a little bit late to the 80s party (look at this clip's year). You'd wouldn't really experience the height of New Wave and Post-punk, nor amazing early College Rock. I'd rethink that.
Yip the sometimes we forget how lucky we were growing up in the 80's ... Great new music and the constant threat of being killed by THE BOMB.................. Ahh the drama
an awesome group and a great new album out. Roll on Brighton Dome on the 29th October....Saw OMD "supporting" Simple Minds recently at Wembley Arena, Minds were great but would have happily left after the fantastic OMD set..

I've seen OMD perform this song live many times, and Andy McCluskey even moves his hand like a wave as he says the lyric.
