No kidding! Although powerleveling can be boring for a while, the effort pays off in the end, and then some. When I finally advanced Disgaea 1's story after 1000 hours of powerleveling (!!!), I really enjoyed the part where I did 20 million damage to super heros. I've faced far, far stronger enemies in the item world that do damage. Today, I'm doing something similiar in Disgaea 2, only far more extreme. I literally hold a world record for damage and I haven't even touched 2's story!
If you think this is extreme, you should look at my Disgaea videos. In Disgaea 2, I otherwise haven't touched the story and yet, no known enemy in the game, can damage 2 of my characters. Yet, I can take out anything in one hit, even if it has 20 million HP. One character is even guaranteed 9-figure damage on any fire-weak enemy! Even then, I still get a lot of enjoyment out of Disgaea 2. FF7 (or any Final Fantasy game for that matter) doesn't even get close to those kinds of extremes!
jesus man, you have some nice materia... personally i find it rather easy to win with vincent at about lvl 40 (1st cd) and with the ribbon of course :)
One might think that choosing that will cut the weapon's power down. It's cuts the overall attack power down, which factors in strength (easily maxed by morphing "heavy tank" outside Gongaga).
@AnnexTrunks1 You DO NOT have to be Level 99 to survive the battle arena. That is overkill. You can easily be successful in the arena once you reach 50 or higher. Sure having the Ultima Weapon helps, but if you spam your materia slots full and you LOSE the ability to use magic, what's the point? All the enemies in the battle arena suck anyway. Here's all you need. Cloud > Ultima Weapon, Ribbon , Imperial Guard, W-Item, Big Guard, AOE Spell (Ultima), and either slash-all or double cut materia.

Man,some of the monsters and creatures still look great to this day,even without a proper death animation. But at the same time,some of the creatures look right down silly. Since when do bunnies are monsters?
Tip, when it comes to choosing the handicap, you can slow the reel down by rapidly tapping the square button then with quick timing you can "choose" your handicap
easy way to do battle arena is have about 3 counter attacks fully mastered placed on cloud with his ultima blade and have his strength and hp maxed out and have a ribbon equiped so basically you never get affected much and you never give the enemy a chance to move (works really well with slash all)
This is not cheating. I don't have a Gameshark and the like. If you spend the countless hours morphing certain enemies to get sources, to max out strength, vitality, dexterity, and luck (I have videos showing how to do this.), you'll get the kinds of stats and stuff I do, which makes the battle arena very easy. I actually have the battle speed set to the minimum here, or slightly above the minimum.
There's a materia, accessible only by chocobo (see my "chocobo only caves" video for the location) that causes the maximums for HP and MP to switch. Instead of 9999 HP and 999 MP, it's 999 HP and 9999 MP. There are uses for this, but protect, sadness, and putting that character in the back row are essential for his/her survival.
@ulillillia You know, I never understood the point in limiting yourself to 999 HP just to have ungodly amounts of MP. Just doesn't seem worth it, since by that point in the game, even NORMAL hits are probably lethal to that person.
Sadness status, the back row, a maxed defense (repeatedly morph "spiral" for that, found outside Mideel's forest), and protect/shell status will make the 999 HP not all that troublesome. Still, that materia is generally quite useless. It would've been better if it set the maximum MP limit to 9999 instead, leaving max HP unchanged. Better yet would be no limits on HP and MP, much like Disgaea has.
I have had that too... as the gold saucer is freely accessible. That basketball game seems to be the fastest and easiest way to get GP needed for the battle arena, and you'll need a lot.
He rarely appears making it a not-so-worthy method, considering the fact that the trolly thing takes so long to go back and forth. Afterall, if I regularly score an average of about 10 to 35 points per game on that basketball game, once getting over 300 GP in one. I actually deliberately lost with the 300 so I made sure I kept it. The timing is easy - 3 or 4 game frames after Cloud stops his animation. There's a 4-frame window of opportunity.
simply use a megalixir at least once and ur guaranteed approx 10000 (u need to win the round tho) and if u die on the last baddie around 5000
im not joking i remember the second time i went to get omnislash i left it for when i took on the weapons and i went in the battle arena in disc 3 used megalixirs and after 5 battles i got omnislash which was alot easier than the first time which took me a whole day
Even without megalixirs, I can get enough battle points in barely 2 hours when omnislash becomes available pretty much first thing (it costs something like 64,000 or 51,200 BP, likely the latter). Accumulating the GP is where 1/3 of that time goes to - that basketball game is the best, though it's also troublesome to some extent. By the time I get omnislash, I'm already level 99 thanks to my sixth leveling ground.
a) theres a guy who sells you a 100GP at a cost of 10,000 )his appearances are random at times but he's located behind the save point at the entrance (clearly visible if u cant see him he aint there)
b) chocobo racing is a great way to earn gp u get at least 50 a race if uve got an s class
my point was using a megalixir (and using variety the Battle arena doesnt award much for mime or repeating magic) gives you 10,000 points which means ull be done in no time
You have to get quite far into the game before you can even do chocobo racing. Most of the time, I get 5's and 10's, occasionally others. 300 is the highest I've gotten in one race (from an elixir or something). I have omnislash well before that point, still on disk 1. I don't know how the scoring system works though - I primarily use physical attacks.
@ulillillia To get that move you need to equip any of your fighting characters with Enemy Skill Materia and go the the beach part right by costol desol. I think that's how you spell it. It's been a while since I played it. OH!!! You also need to get yourself a "Manipulate" Materia and then go to the beach by costol desol beach. Fight the monsters and manipulate them. Use thier "Big Guard" Move on yourself and voila. That move casts haste & MBarrier and Barrier at the same time.
I have all linked with all in some cases. Sure it has no use for battle or anything, except it is very handy... when it comes to getting gil at a blazing fast speed. Linking mega all is just the same, though not for gil. If I have no use for linked slots, then it doesn't matter what goes in them. If 4 links are available and I'm only using 2 support materia (actually using it instead of mastering it for gil), then I've got 4 slots for pretty much whatever.
Slash-all is used when the independent materia "mega all" is equipped. "Mega all" provides "all" effects on every action. This includes "attack", and "slash-all" is basically "attack all". If "independent materia broken" occurs afterwards, then "slash-all" will become "attack".
Sources are easy to get - just morph heavy tank (strength), spiral (vitality), bad rap (luck), and poodler (speed), the four easiest and fastest, of which I have videos for.
There's a materia that switches the max HP and MP limits around, causing HP plus materia to give you more MP. You can only get it with a special chocobo, either black or something lower grade, but definitely not the regular yellow.
There's a materia, available only by chocobo, that switches the maximums for HP and MP. With it, you'll only get 999 HP, but you'll have 9999 MP instead of the other way around.
@AceofKuja you can find a materia (a blue one) the effect is you change your mana with your hp^^ the materia is called hp<--->mp or something like that
The magenta ones (independent) are quite moderate in terms of unique types. Green ones (magic) and red ones (summons) are very common. Blue ones (support) and especially yellow ones (command) are rare.
It gives you every single spell in the game, very handy, but exceedingly rare. It also doesn't have handicaps nor bonuses and cannot be mastered. You can get an unlimited supply of them (I've heard of a cap of 8, but I've never gone that extreme considering that more than 6 really has no use.) by mastering the individual magic materia and performing a combination using the huge materia (see the "master magic, summon, and command" video (order of words uncertain) for details.
@JingZterifererz there's 1 handy tip, if you repeatedly press square, just tap it really fast during the slot spin it slows it down a bit so you can better time it.
@DeathScourge yeah, i know that trick except im playing on the psp version so they fixed that spam square glitch :(
anyway by the time i decided to get omnislash and w-summon i had a bunch of good materia and over 500 gp from chocobo racing so i still got it quite easily
Oh yeah, one more question: When maxing out stats, is there like a limit to how many power sources you can give someone? I got 99 power sources and gave them all to Cloud, who was already at 255 and it didn't "auto stop" or anything like it does when feeding 99 greens to a chocobo.
There is a limit as to how many of an item you can carry, but there is no known usage limit. You should watch the usage of the sources. Know what weapon and armor you want equipped then raise the stats based on this so you'll get 255. Use the other remaining sources on the other characters once you reach this point.
You can buy them... late in the game at Fort Condor. I think you have to be near the end of disk 2 in order to do it. You can, however, get 6 or so all materia by simply finding it (the tutorial area at game start, Mount Nibel (right after Nibelheim), and a few others. Put as much of this on double and/or triple growth as possible. Triple growth is like having 2 bonus "all" materias and double is like having 1. 2 on triple and 4 on double is like having 14 alls instead of 6.
However, the easiest way in Battle Arena is after getting the mime materia, and waiting until Cloud knows Meteorain and just miming it repeatedly on the enemies, then get omnislash and it's even easier
The ancient forest is where you get the apocalypse (supposedly, if that's the weapon for cloud with 3 triple growth slots). If you missed W-item, you'll need to use Bone Village to obtain it. This can take anywhere from about 10 minutes (if you're lucky) to a few hours from several tries. It's advised that you get W-item when you can - it adds another 15 to 30 minutes to that part of the game's story (depending on how quickly you defeat enemies and how often they are encountered).
u can get apocalypse from the ancient forest near the area where ultimate died at. and the w-item can be obtained midgar but only and only if u havent beaten hojo yet. if hojo is defeated, u cant get it anymore. so when u do the invasion midgar mission, u have to find this item in the area where u go with all the pipes and ladders. (The area where u go in before u head in the train tracks area where the turks are located)
Actually you can get an unlimited supply of ribbons but you have to be on disk 3. Look for an enemy called "Tonberry" and morph it. Cast "stop" on it to prevent its counter attack while you weaken it (don't use demi spells - they'll heal it).
You get morph along the route of the Temple of the Ancients, clear back on disk 1. If you missed it for some reason, you can always use "Bone Village". This route can take a few minutes to even a few hours (that's better than the few seconds it takes to go a little out of the way to get morph). Once you do get it, consider mastering it so you can get more. Another option is to defeat Emerald Weapon and go to someone in Kalm.

Ribbon helps for protection against status effects, but the best way is to spend time maxing out stats. Focus on strength (this'll result in 8000 damage per hit without a critical), dexterity (strike fast and boost evasion (64% when maxed!)), luck (at 255, you're almost guaranteed a critical hit), and then vitality (reduces damage received though not significant)). I have videos explaining how to do this.
dude! you wasted several turns in preps! just cast enemy skill big guard (might not be called that, don't remember) it puts you in haste an casts barrier and mbarrier all at the same time
u can get the white wind from the "wind wing" enemy, which is located in the crater where it has the whirlwind maze. thats about how u get it but i there is another enemy tht has tht skill but i forgot lol
dude, if you wait til then to get it you've completely wasted your time. you can get at as soon as you have both the land buggy, and the Manipulate materia. can't remember what the monster's called, but it's in Junon area. jus ride your buggy into Costa Del Sol and take the boat back to Junon. Then manipulate this large owl-like creature to learn White Wind.
played the battle arena a while ago with barret...funny thing about getting up there in stats. It took 4 weapon breaks in order for his weapon to stop doing 9K to the enemy.....even as a frog he was still doing 9K....nothing more epic than going through the entire arena as a frog doing max damage! VERY EPIC
The apocalypse is found in the Ancient Forest, accessible by either gold chocobo or by defeating diamond/ultima weapon (I don't recall which specific one it was). I think the enhance sword is obtained in shops, but I have no idea.
I actually kind of like ultima in this game. It's nowhere near the best of the effects in the series (FF6's meteor, for me, is the best), it's about 2/3 of the way to the top (meaning that there are several other effects I like more, about 1 in every 3).

Although some new games are good, e.g Super Mario Galaxy was excellent, and I don't care what people say, Smash Bros. Sorry I think I replied to the wrong post. I love brawl and the PS3 but I really don't agree that old games are bad just cuz they're old, and it's the opposite with music, just cuz something's old or "classic" doesn't make it good.

My point was that there are a butt load of awesome "old" games, as there are many fantastic new ones, you can't say something is good or bad just cuz of when it came out. "Pong" was a revolutionary game for example, despite being very simple. And heavenly sword, despite being new and having fantastic graphics, sucked balls. it doesn't seem that complicated really.
Why don't you use "Big Guard" instead of casting every single spell? I know, it is not really necessary, especially with stats like these but Big Guard is one of the best Enemy Skills so it would be good to equip the Enemy Skill materia. It's useful. Especially during the story line.
... and if you don't have it because enemies don't use it on your characters, then what? You're out of luck. Besides, this game is so easy as it is, I have no need for even having just protect alone on just one character.
this game is pure genius....I am no gamer but I have played FF 7 and 8 until cows came home for months. Since then, every other game I tried made me go 'bleah'. Never played another one as good as this.
Is it possible to get more than 2 of each master materia? (I know you can get one set by mastering all 21 magics and all 16 summons) and another set by beating emerald weapon.... can you get another set by continuing to master materia?
Definitely! I have 6 master command materia, 3 master summons and, I think, 4 master magic. Each time you master a given materia, you'll get a brand new one that has 0 AP on it. Master that one and you get another. When you want gil, look no further than mastering alls. By filling Cid's Javelin with all (all 5 double-growth slots), each AP you get is essentially worth 400 gil. Each head hunter becomes 32,000 gil, far, far more than even magic pots drop (a magic pot gives 400,000).
You dont even know. I started the Arena, first fight got the end, only to end up fighting a Master Tonberry, you know Instant kill guy. Then I went to fight again...And made it to the end then got to the ghost ship, and got about 3 hits on him, then he knocked me out of the fight.
Cast stop on the Master Tonberry. That way, it won't use its counterattack. I've never had a problem with ghost ship though... then again, I defeat it in 1 or 2 hits.... Have you tried maxing the strength stat? That helps significantly. Even better is maxing dexterity (for evasion and swiftness to action) and luck (for about an 80 to 90% chance of critical hits, and a 100% chance that deathblow will succeed (if the enemy doesn't evade physical attacks). Just some tips to consider.
Easy: morph heavy tank. See my "how to max strength" video for details. Vitality, dexterity, and luck are all maxed as well, also with a video to explain it.
To use death blow on all targets, you definitely need "mega all", found in the final area. To get deathblow to always work, significantly raise the luck stat (easily done by morphing "bad rap" - see my "how to max dexterity and luck" video for details and tips). Luck is the easiest and fastest stat to max out.
You should be able to get it with a black one. I've always only gone after them once I got the gold one so I don't really know if any lower-class ones (river or mountain) will do. The only case where the gold one is required is for the Knights of Round materia.
See my "how to max strength" video for details - morph "heavy tank" for power sources and use them. It's the fastest and easiest way to raise strength to the max. Even cloud's original buster sword would still have 255 attack, even though it's the weakest weapon of all. This is why I focus on the materia slots more than the weapon itself.
Strength is your base attack. Power sources raise this. Strength plus weapon attack is the resulting "attack" stat. If strength is already maxed, attack will be maxed and thus, any weapon, no matter how weak, will keep attack at 255. Vitality is the same, of which affects defense and armor dete

All I did was use Yuffie. I used her limit break Gauntlet, then followed up every battle by using Mime, which allowed her to use it again and again.

I have all linked with all in some cases. Sure it has no use for battle or anything, except it is very handy... when it comes to getting gil at a blazing fast speed. Linking mega all is just the same, though not for gil. If I have no use for linked slots, then it doesn't matter what goes in them. If 4 links are available and I'm only using 2 support materia (actually using it instead of mastering it for gil), then I've got 4 slots for pretty much whatever.

Slash-all is used when the independent materia "mega all" is equipped. "Mega all" provides "all" effects on every action. This includes "attack", and "slash-all" is basically "attack all". If "independent materia broken" occurs afterwards, then "slash-all" will become "attack".

Sources are easy to get - just morph heavy tank (strength), spiral (vitality), bad rap (luck), and poodler (speed), the four easiest and fastest, of which I have videos for.

There's a materia that switches the max HP and MP limits around, causing HP plus materia to give you more MP. You can only get it with a special chocobo, either black or something lower grade, but definitely not the regular yellow.

There's a materia, available only by chocobo, that switches the maximums for HP and MP. With it, you'll only get 999 HP, but you'll have 9999 MP instead of the other way around.

The magenta ones (independent) are quite moderate in terms of unique types. Green ones (magic) and red ones (summons) are very common. Blue ones (support) and especially yellow ones (command) are rare.

It gives you every single spell in the game, very handy, but exceedingly rare. It also doesn't have handicaps nor bonuses and cannot be mastered. You can get an unlimited supply of them (I've heard of a cap of 8, but I've never gone that extreme considering that more than 6 really has no use.) by mastering the individual magic materia and performing a combination using the huge materia (see the "master magic, summon, and command" video (order of words uncertain) for details.

@JingZterifererz there's 1 handy tip, if you repeatedly press square, just tap it really fast during the slot spin it slows it down a bit so you can better time it.

Oh yeah, one more question: When maxing out stats, is there like a limit to how many power sources you can give someone? I got 99 power sources and gave them all to Cloud, who was already at 255 and it didn't "auto stop" or anything like it does when feeding 99 greens to a chocobo.

There is a limit as to how many of an item you can carry, but there is no known usage limit. You should watch the usage of the sources. Know what weapon and armor you want equipped then raise the stats based on this so you'll get 255. Use the other remaining sources on the other characters once you reach this point.

You can buy them... late in the game at Fort Condor. I think you have to be near the end of disk 2 in order to do it. You can, however, get 6 or so all materia by simply finding it (the tutorial area at game start, Mount Nibel (right after Nibelheim), and a few others. Put as much of this on double and/or triple growth as possible. Triple growth is like having 2 bonus "all" materias and double is like having 1. 2 on triple and 4 on double is like having 14 alls instead of 6.

Yea, I have ALL stats maxed for Cloud naturally
However, the easiest way in Battle Arena is after getting the mime materia, and waiting until Cloud knows Meteorain and just miming it repeatedly on the enemies, then get omnislash and it's even easier

The ancient forest is where you get the apocalypse (supposedly, if that's the weapon for cloud with 3 triple growth slots). If you missed W-item, you'll need to use Bone Village to obtain it. This can take anywhere from about 10 minutes (if you're lucky) to a few hours from several tries. It's advised that you get W-item when you can - it adds another 15 to 30 minutes to that part of the game's story (depending on how quickly you defeat enemies and how often they are encountered).

u can get apocalypse from the ancient forest near the area where ultimate died at. and the w-item can be obtained midgar but only and only if u havent beaten hojo yet. if hojo is defeated, u cant get it anymore. so when u do the invasion midgar mission, u have to find this item in the area where u go with all the pipes and ladders. (The area where u go in before u head in the train tracks area where the turks are located)

Actually you can get an unlimited supply of ribbons but you have to be on disk 3. Look for an enemy called "Tonberry" and morph it. Cast "stop" on it to prevent its counter attack while you weaken it (don't use demi spells - they'll heal it).

You get morph along the route of the Temple of the Ancients, clear back on disk 1. If you missed it for some reason, you can always use "Bone Village". This route can take a few minutes to even a few hours (that's better than the few seconds it takes to go a little out of the way to get morph). Once you do get it, consider mastering it so you can get more. Another option is to defeat Emerald Weapon and go to someone in Kalm.

Ribbon helps for protection against status effects, but the best way is to spend time maxing out stats. Focus on strength (this'll result in 8000 damage per hit without a critical), dexterity (strike fast and boost evasion (64% when maxed!)), luck (at 255, you're almost guaranteed a critical hit), and then vitality (reduces damage received though not significant)). I have videos explaining how to do this.

dude, if you wait til then to get it you've completely wasted your time. you can get at as soon as you have both the land buggy, and the Manipulate materia. can't remember what the monster's called, but it's in Junon area. jus ride your buggy into Costa Del Sol and take the boat back to Junon. Then manipulate this large owl-like creature to learn White Wind.

Big Guard is on the shoreline/beach south of Gongaga and near the Mythril Man's House. Manipulate a beach plug and you'll learn it.
Haste/Barrier and MBarrier is then caste :)

played the battle arena a while ago with barret...funny thing about getting up there in stats. It took 4 weapon breaks in order for his weapon to stop doing 9K to the enemy.....even as a frog he was still doing 9K....nothing more epic than going through the entire arena as a frog doing max damage! VERY EPIC

The apocalypse is found in the Ancient Forest, accessible by either gold chocobo or by defeating diamond/ultima weapon (I don't recall which specific one it was). I think the enhance sword is obtained in shops, but I have no idea.

I actually kind of like ultima in this game. It's nowhere near the best of the effects in the series (FF6's meteor, for me, is the best), it's about 2/3 of the way to the top (meaning that there are several other effects I like more, about 1 in every 3).

My point was that there are a butt load of awesome "old" games, as there are many fantastic new ones, you can't say something is good or bad just cuz of when it came out. "Pong" was a revolutionary game for example, despite being very simple. And heavenly sword, despite being new and having fantastic graphics, sucked balls. it doesn't seem that complicated really.

Why don't you use "Big Guard" instead of casting every single spell? I know, it is not really necessary, especially with stats like these but Big Guard is one of the best Enemy Skills so it would be good to equip the Enemy Skill materia. It's useful. Especially during the story line.

Is it possible to get more than 2 of each master materia? (I know you can get one set by mastering all 21 magics and all 16 summons) and another set by beating emerald weapon.... can you get another set by continuing to master materia?

Definitely! I have 6 master command materia, 3 master summons and, I think, 4 master magic. Each time you master a given materia, you'll get a brand new one that has 0 AP on it. Master that one and you get another. When you want gil, look no further than mastering alls. By filling Cid's Javelin with all (all 5 double-growth slots), each AP you get is essentially worth 400 gil. Each head hunter becomes 32,000 gil, far, far more than even magic pots drop (a magic pot gives 400,000).

You dont even know. I started the Arena, first fight got the end, only to end up fighting a Master Tonberry, you know Instant kill guy. Then I went to fight again...And made it to the end then got to the ghost ship, and got about 3 hits on him, then he knocked me out of the fight.

Cast stop on the Master Tonberry. That way, it won't use its counterattack. I've never had a problem with ghost ship though... then again, I defeat it in 1 or 2 hits.... Have you tried maxing the strength stat? That helps significantly. Even better is maxing dexterity (for evasion and swiftness to action) and luck (for about an 80 to 90% chance of critical hits, and a 100% chance that deathblow will succeed (if the enemy doesn't evade physical attacks). Just some tips to consider.

To use death blow on all targets, you definitely need "mega all", found in the final area. To get deathblow to always work, significantly raise the luck stat (easily done by morphing "bad rap" - see my "how to max dexterity and luck" video for details and tips). Luck is the easiest and fastest stat to max out.

You should be able to get it with a black one. I've always only gone after them once I got the gold one so I don't really know if any lower-class ones (river or mountain) will do. The only case where the gold one is required is for the Knights of Round materia.

See my "how to max strength" video for details - morph "heavy tank" for power sources and use them. It's the fastest and easiest way to raise strength to the max. Even cloud's original buster sword would still have 255 attack, even though it's the weakest weapon of all. This is why I focus on the materia slots more than the weapon itself.
