  • Consider Yourself.

  • My grandfather was Edgars best friend years ago they were both from Decatur Michigan

  • That rooster reminds me of Chicken Joe from "Surf's Up"...

  • Charlie is a little unkind, isn't he. I mean, very funny, but unkind. Mr. Bergen is nice though.

  • Goodness, finally! The CHICKENS!

  • Pretty funny to remember this was a year after Bergen's daughter appeared on the show, who hated being called "Charlie McCarthy's little sister."

  • Gonzo said on Raw that he could be a WWE Champion.

He's obvious been training for a long time.

  • @NYG4LIFE123: and considering how wooden some of the wrestlers now, even charlie & bergen would feel right at home & gonzo vs a brick would be more entertaining than most modern main events

  • This proves Charlie McCarthy has more emotional acting ability than Candice Bergen. :)

  • Not a very good ventriloquist is he

  • @tenshi415 why?

  • @tenshi415 dude he was like in his 70s do u know how hard it is to do ventriaquism that old? It's hard doing it at the age of 20.

  • This was cool when I was 11... but not much anymore. Not that there aren't good moments for adults. But it was mainly made for kids of course.

  • @mrFalconlem o.O im 15 and I love this show, so does my dad, and hes 50

  • @mrFalconlem Yeah, my mum and dad love it. They're in their 50's. I'm only 19. Muppets work for people who can stretch their imagination, I suppose.

  • I'm 18 yrs old now, and the First time I ever seen Edger, Charlie, and Mortimer in the second half of the ( Old ) Disney Film "Fun and Fancy Free". after that, I absolutly fell in love with those guys. thanks for the Upload, I had no idea they were on the Muppet show!

  • I think this was special for Jim Henson because i think this guy was one of his inspirations.

  • Edgar Bergen is my favorite ventriliguist, and i <3 Mortimer Snerd!!!

  • Oliver + Edgar Bergen x Charlie x Muppets + Comedy = Season 2 of the Muppets, Episode 7

  • the muppet show is inspirational ,even more inspirational with Edgar Bergan in it!!

  • I bet Charlie feels at home being w/ so many other puppets. He probably feels special being the only 1 whose puppeteer can be seen.

  • @Stephen10528 im sure :) charlie never seemed to be at a loss for a reason to feel special compared to others, lol;)

  • i seen better puppeteers than bergen, he move his mouth too much.

  • @terrorizerr1 ... no you haven't you dumbass he's the only good one... and it's called a ventriloquist

  • @hobozrock i use any word i want! and yes theres is so many better than him!

  • @hobozrock It's not nice to call someone a dumbass!

  • @terrorizerr1 He still is funny!

  • 8:08-8:15 the news reporter of the muppets show forgot to put his trousers on whilst going live on tv.......oh good grief.

    classic

  • @TONYCOV881 This is not the Peanuts, if you catch my drift.....

  • 1:55 im gonna put this shit on my ringback

  • Two of the greatest entertainers of their time. Right?

  • @NaiTaiDai I can agree with that.

  • The Muppet Movie was dedicated to the memory of Edgar Bergman.

  • Its incredible how Edgar and Charlie laugh at the same time!

  • RIP Edgar Bergen 1903-1978 A legend in his time and the Father of Candice Bergen.

  • @BayareaGuy06 He was Jim Henson's inspiration and The Muppet Movie was his final appearance in a film! Truly a man to be remembered.

  • The federal judge who got assassinated in Tucson was named John McCarthy Roll. He was a dummy for supporting a kosher-slaughtering Jew bitch CongressVegetable.

  • Who do you think was on TMS first, Edgar Bergan, or his daughter Candace Bergan? I still wonder about that.

  • He was pure genius. There will never be another like him.

  • His lips move, but nobody calls him on it because he is so good at the comedy portion, as well as making Charlie and Mortimer relate to the audiance!

  • I just can't belive it, A stick of wood that talks!

    LOL.

  • A puppet operated by a puppet... Trippy

  • edgar burgen is treated as father of modern ventriloquism. his book ' how to become a ventiloquist" is a great one. it touched all the aspects of ventriloquism. He is inspiration for so many ventriloquists all over the world- mimicrysrinivos., mimic and ventriloquist, India

  • Cool! i didnt know tht Bergen and Charlie were on this show!! I love how i search 'Edgar Burgen' to d my homework and i find this!! the internet is awesome!!

  • he moved his lips, maybe because he was on the radio for 20 years!

  • his lips move

  • he's the original Jeff Dunham

  • Call me a purist but a true ventriloquist uses a dummy and not puppets. Some of the best ones can move the eyes as well as the mouth.

  • @revaluator: it is ventriloquistism meets puppetry, because bergen was both an inspiration for & fan of henson's work; the muppet movie was even dedicated to his memory, since his cameo in it was his last before he passed on.

  • Edgar Bergen is cool, Bring back Muppet show!

  • "Well, that's what we want."

    "Relaxed guests?"

    "No, song cues."

    Of course, Kermit, of course.

  • How can you have Edgar Bergen & Charlie without Mortimer? I grew up watching those 3 in Fun and Fancy Free

  • @Zistheone2 YES :D I loved that movie!

  • @Zistheone2

Me too! Now I also enjoy them on cassette tapes of their old radio show, and of course this Muppet Show episode. You can get the radio show tapes at Radio Spirits, they have a website online.

  • Edgar Bergen RIP

  • OK, I lost it on the chickens!

  • See guys, some men can make big money just by playing with dolls!

  • If I had a day COMPLETELY free of things to do, I would love to watch this series.

  • "Consider yourself one of the family." High praise indeed, coming from our resident phantom, Uncle Deadly.

Of course, the TV puppetry really wouldn't exist without pioneers like Edgar Bergen, so forgive him if his lips move a bit.

  • Bergan and charlie plus mortimer will rest in peace.

  • Wow, a very rare appearance by the blue dragon creature (the one who appears in the song first), think he was just a little too demonic looking for this show! Wasn't his name "Uncle Deadly", or something like that?

  • I remember seeing these two in "The Muppet Movie," but I never new Edgar Bergen made an appearance on the Muppet show. Thanks so much for posting this!

    RIP Edgar Bergen.

  • Somehow I knew we'd be throwing a brick at Gonzo during that sketch. Poor Gonzo. :)

  • Gonzo+ Trumpet=BOOM!!!

Here he goes..the dummy and the dummy...lol.

  • Edgar Bergen was THE BEST!!!!! He was in his prime a little before my time but I remember watching him him with Charlie and Mortimer and his lips didn't move then. The older he got, the more his mouth moved but he was still THE GREAT ONE.

  • Edgar was up in years at this time and some of his skills had faded. He was still the guy who paved the way for all the others and there will never be another like him.

  • One of the chickens was biting Kermit, or at least had his arm in her mouth.

  • 1:49 That's a cute clip! I sing "Baby Face" in chicken language when I am bored, or when I feel like making people laugh!

  • "There he goes; the dummy and his dummy." Mean-spirited humor, but funny.

  • WTF!! He mouths his lips a lot!!!

    Italy

  • dude you have to relize he is very old thus harder to throw his voice his vocal cords were going he had to be at least 70 but yes he do's

  • I really enjjoyed "Consider Yourself" . - For once a song I knew before and had not to look up! ... and Charlie's comments were funny!

  • What was the name of the song the chickens sang?

  • Baby Face

  • you know, if you watch the close-ups of the chickens in the baby face number, you can see the puppeteer sticking his arm up too high

  • I think Jeff Dunham and Terry Fator could be the next Edgar Bergen.

  • I Think I Could to :) I have a Charlie dummy, Moving eyes, eyebrows, and mouth

  • he was good and i might be getting one the chralie dolls on sale but in my poinion jeff dunham is better at keeping his lips still and he has better funnier mtierieal

  • watch edger bergen when he is younger

he doesnt move his lips wen hes young

  • obviously you haven't watched hardly any of edger burgens content, and PS "The dead terrorist" was pathetically NOT funny.

  • If there was a "Muppet Show" today, guest stars would include Jeff Dunham and Terry Fator. :)

  • wasn't his daughter on this show 2

  • Yes, Candice was on the show (season 1, episode 15 to be exact)

  • I simply love those chikens !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Me: Edgar and Charlie with Jim and his Muppets? Brilliant! Gotta love it!

    Charlie: Speak for yourself.

  • When Edgar opens his mouth to vent, he does look a bit like Bob Hope.

  • franklin bevear fox bear skunk goose rabbit snail badger otter

  • dummy and his dummy, rofl

  • edgar bergen was a very famouse person at his time, he died on the night of his farewell concert, it was really a good farewell.

  • Who's the blue dragon in the "Consider Yourself" number?

  • That would be Uncle Deadly (played by Jerry Nelson). 8-)

  • Perfect for radio, eh?

  • I saw him on Walt Disney's Fun and Fancy Free telling the story of Mickey and the Beanstalk.

  • Also on Fun and Fancy Free was Charlie McCarthey, Mortimer Snerd and child actress Luana Patten.

  • I used to watch this all the time. Bring's back memories. Edger Bergin and Charlie McCarthey! Love it. Same Edger Bergin was rather old and you could see his mouth moves slightly. :(

  • good video i love it

  • Bergen was one of Henson's top inspirations. The original Muppet Movie was dedicated to his memory.

  • I didn't know Edgar and Charlie were on the Muppet Show. It's even more of a reason to get the season.

  • this was Edgar's final appearance on television...he passed away in 1978. He was amidst his farewell tour after a 56 year in the entertainment business and died between appearances.

  • And 'The Muppet Movie' was his last on-screen appearance in a motion picture. In the closing credits, the film is dedicated to his memory.

Kind of fitting, if you think about it, that his final appearances were with the Muppets.

  • this man was great....i loved his act....

  • what's the name of that opening #?

  • "Baby Face", a song from the '20s.

  • Wauw, i didn't know that, thanks! And yes, he really is funny.

  • LOL!! I loved this show when I was a kid and I still do! I also had au Charlie McCarthy Puppet as well. Awesome video!

  • great combination

  • wow so cool muppets will never die

  • True, but the Muppeteers will, unfortunatley. We've already lost Jim Henson and Richard Hunt. But even if they die, the memory will live on.

  • Okay, his lips moved, but that wasn't the point, the man was a master. The act was fantastic. He entertained the nation for decades!

  • I agree!! Edgar himself knew he moved his lips and Charlie often teased him about it. Bergen's radio show ran for 19 years, 1937-1956...and the thing that made it a hit wasn't Bergen being a ventriloquist. The thing that brought in ratings was the comical interplay between Bergen, McCarthy, and Mortimer Snerd and the other characters that shown up...including WC Fields. In a lot of ways, the ventriloquism was secondary...it was a radio show after all. who can see a ventriloquist on radio?

  • that was what baffled a lot of critics now and then...how a ventriloquist was a success on radio...and through the radio series people listening at home often forgot that Bergen gave voice to McCarthy and it was like two different people talking back and fourth. Paul Winchell was the more superior ventriloquist but Bergen is who paved the way and shown that there could be a career in that field.

  • oh i didnt know my bad i just thought he was old

  • @ACcountryFan 5:27 - 5:32 Edgar Bergen pokes fun at himself as a ventriloquist. XP

  • I thought thats what I knid of said my self.

Bergen had a great way of putting himself down.

  • Thanx for posting these Bergen clips. This was Bergen - McCArthy aged at the end of his/their career, so that might account for some shakiness in technique. Still funny even toward the end of his career. And Bergen was still performing right up to the VERY end.

  • Meh...I've seen worse vents. At least he could pull it off.

  • First time I've ever seen how bad a vent Bergen really was.

Luckily he made up for it with a great skill at dialouge. Cheers for this.

  • think about it he was really hold when he did this so his chin would move a bit more :p

  • I'm listening to Old Radio Shows From the 40's with Bergen & McCarthy.

Charlie Frequently points out how bad a Vent Bergen was, even then. Somewhere on youtube there is a Vid from the 40's of Bergen & McCarthy @ the race track and in that you can see how much his lips move.
