  • i feel your rage and have had the same thought process, TV sucks do to all the junk they put on it, and there doing it to the movies at the movies theater as well, i am like WTH i pay 7-15 for a ticket, 5 for a drink set down an now i have to watch commercials, come on!!! i would almost rather what till the movies comes out on blue ray so i can watch it in my house on my big ass TV with no commercials, and i can passe it to do what ever when ever i want an not miss a thing, and it looks beater.

  • Netfilix is awesome

until you watch all the episodes

and the next season has been out for a year

and they don't have it yet

I want to watch doctor who already!!!!

  • Antenna for win

  • sorry, have to stay with my TV, it's where my SOAP operas are. If Prospect Park hadn't bailed my soap would be online and it'd be great but that didn't happen so..

  • Amen to this entire video, man.

  • Is it me or has the name of this video changed from "Death to Cable" to "Kill Your TV"

  • i saw veronica mars <3 hell yes

  • Omg you have the same remote as me ! :D

  • When I watch cable it's usually for something on the Science Channel, Syfy, BBC, or TBS for humor. Those are almost the only channels I watch, and even then only rarely for a specific show.

  • As an American, I have to say that American TV is, indeed, crap. We used to have really good stuff back in the mid 20th century, and we still have a few good shows like Once Upon A Time, Grimm, and Phineas And Ferb (Phineas And Ferb is a freaking work of genius, why can't all kids' cartoons be like that?) but mostly it's just Disney Channel and a butt load of crime shows. I'm a GIGANTIC BBC fan. Doctor Who/Sherlock FOREVER!!!

  • I made a favorite channels list on my parents' TV which includes everything except the channels we don't get, the HD channels (they don't have an HD TV), the sports channels, and the foreign language channels. It took a long time and the list went from over 1,000 channels down to about 50. AND they have Netflix, which I have never seen them watch. I don't understand it.

  • We pay for cable so we can see Doctor Who the night it comes out.

Yes there are torrented versions that come out on the night-of as well but it's not the same.

PS WHAT IS TORRENTING I WOULD NEVER DO THAT BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS

  • I use Netflix, Youtube, iStreamnet (free Tv Show streaming for iPhone and iPod touch) and then i play PS3 that's all my media :D (plus apps on iPhone).

  • Adblock. I win :D

  • This is funny because there was a Direct tv ad on the page as well.:P

  • .......did you just suggest Angel was a good TV show? Shame on you.

  • The only time I ever use the satellite television service is to see new episodes of Doctor Who on BBC America.

  • I like my satellite, but Netflix and the internet is better.

  • I get cable for free with my internet connection its just there for background noise now ;)

  • Page up.

  • Am I the only person who actually likes TV here? :P Okay, a lot of it is rubbish, but there is good stuff too! As for network television, I don't really mind the ads if they keep my favourite shows going. I really don't.

  • what if you watch as much youtube as the average person watches tv? does the amount of time spent watching advertising get closer to that of a tv watching person?

  • After I moved out last summer, I decided not to get a TV, and quite frankly, I don't miss it at all! The only time I watch TV now, is when I'm at my parent's place on saturdays while we eat. If I want to watch a show, I either guy it on DVD or watch it online.

  • Switch to DirecTV...

  • The thing is, the computer is not a social thing. It's something that a person does on their own.

A television however, IS social, the concept is that you sit down on the sofa with friends and family and experience something together. That's why people go to the cinema with friends.

    The TV is important.

  • @Inneedofaname3 or you could hook your computer to the TV screen in front of the sofa. That's why you watch DVDs with friends or go to the cinema with friends and watch things that you actually want to see....

  • @Inneedofaname3

I don't find sitting and watching T.V. a social experience, kind of the opposite! Just sitting together doesn't mean I'm socialising with them, and it made me far less inclined to sit in the living room because I do not enjoy most teve, and definitely not what most of my family watched, so I would spend most of my time in my room, and when we were watching a show we were all interested in, we wouldn't discuss it because we wouldn't want to talk over the teve.

  • I don't get cable. I wouldn't even watch cable if I got it for free. The idea of actually paying for it baffles my mind.

  • Everyone cancel your cable!.. and... get addblocker for NO ads while watching awesome stuff...

  • There's also DVR and fast forward, hopefully digital cable will record shows while cutting out the commercials one day.

  • WOW, 5 hours a day watching TV? I don't even watch that much in a month! .. But if you were to factor in YouTube, that would be a different story. hah.

  • Gave my TV away about 6 or 7 years ago, the only thing I miss is using my SNES, but well there are solutions for that too.

  • Does no one else want to know what happened to Sam!?

  • here's some irony, while watching I got an ad for comcast (which I use)and, an ad for tv fanatic.

  • I have my TV for one reason, BBC America m

  • I couldn't agree more. Sites like youtube have allow passionate, interesting people like John and Hank Greene to be seen and heard. If I was watching tv instead of surfing for my video entertainment i never would have been exposed to anything that wasn't corporate exec approved bullcrap (which let's face it most of tv is). And i would have to watch thousands of different ads all telling me how insufficient i am as a human being. Hank and John's passion for the world around them inspires me.

  • Keep your tv for 1 advert, simples.

  • I canceled my cable last night :3 woot!~

  • the only thing i watch on cable is futurama

  • aren't you from that show on YouTube xD

  • @121anthony121 If you mean SciShow, Truth or Fail, Hank Games or Crashcourse, then yes! If you mean something else, then no. If you mean Batman, then kind of.

  • You only think we're going to live for sixty years? =)

  • I hate video advertising. Which is why i avoid channels with adverts unless there's something i want to watch (unlikely). The only problem is that the beeb still insist on advertising them selves...

  • Fast forwarding through commercials is the reason I love my DVR.

  • its funny that there is a comcast ad to the right of the video

  • you can also find the exact same shows on the website of most networks the day after with much fewer ads the next day

  • Unfortunately you can not watch TV with antennas anymore..

  • MANATEEEEEES!!!! Hank that is your BEST POSTER YET!!! Where did you get it? Can you please talk in a video about the dangers facing manatees?! They are my favorite endangered animal (and my favorite animal in general) but nobody cares that people keep killing them with their hedonistic leisurely boating. It's not fishermen trying to make a living killing them, it's people in high speed motor boats who just don't care, their extinction is avoidable if only people will stop perpetuating worldsuck!

  • American TV sounds crap. I like my freeview TV, E4, cbeebies, More4. I am happy.

  • @lololpoppy wait, cbeebies.... parent or mad teenager?

  • @McTaminus Both, mostly parent. Still find myself watching the shows for hours after he's gone for a nap

  • the picture quality of Jersey Shore on Netflix is soooo horrible, its unwatchable

  • I hate the 5 second wait time between channels. I also didn't have TV until I was 8. And I'm 13. So I've only had five years of TV in my life.

  • I have cable TV right now cuz its free. Have since I moved almost 3 months ago. Haven't watched anything on it yet. Why would I? I have YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu. Also CBS.com for the only currently running show I care about... Big Bang Theroy.

  • Finding Bigfoot is so fun to watch because it's really entertaining how they really believe bigfoots exist haha

  • i live in south africa. our internet lines here tend to be too slow to be able to stream much. youtube is about the most i can manage, and that is on my office line which is a billion times faster than home-lines. its like maybe 4 meg at a good office job. and its shaped. so its slower the more u stream or download, and its capped. so u run out of internet. and its expensive because there is one phone line company, one or two othe ISP's, & the exchange rate means i cant afford ur netflix etc. :(

  • What happened to sam? :(

  • I've never had cable in my life. Free to air TV wins!

  • Down with cable! Up with Vlogbrothers! Rabble rabble rabble rabble!

  • If you're irritated by all of the ads on the internet, I have one word for everybody: ADBLOCK. This isn't spam, this is one of the coolest programs I've got, because it takes ads off of everything. Just sayin'.

  • @TheFantasticDrEli <----- listen to this man GET ADBLOCK its one of the best things i have ever downloaded

  • This is exactly what I have been trying to tell my parents they just don't understand, and also with grass. Cable and grass!!! so stupid!!

  • well i download my tv

  • i love how buffering happens when hank is complying about the 5 second gap

  • @elecxonica He did that on purpose. It was a video editing technique.

  • And this is why internet = programs and tv = skyrim

  • I love to use Netflix again, my problem is that I do not currently have a platform that uses a Microsoft or Apple OS. Netflix, partnered up with Microsoft, have made certain that the Silverlight software that runs the streaming, is not available on Unix operating systems. But, I do not want to go back to Microsoft until I have gained more knowledge in the Unix area. And, I'm too broke for Macs.

  • i watch my tv on the internet

  • Hank, today you made me sad. You see, today you pointed out ( in my mind) that Netflix no longer has veronica mars on instant view. They do ,however, have Firefly. BUT they don't have Castle. I have never seen Castle, but because of Firefly I have a thing for Nathan Fillion. And because there is only one season of Firefly I need a new source of Fillion-ness because you can only watch Dr. Horrible's sing along blog so many times.

  • Yup all good points, I didn't have to wait for them buffer either cause I have a good (cable) modem :-P

  • Except that Netflix is lacking a hell of a lot of shows.

  • I don't mind...I steal cable anyway

  • My internet bill + netflix + hulu plus (which I don't currently pay for, but have in the past) is STILL cheaper than any of the cable/satellite packages out there. Current episodes of every show are available on the internet with a little creative searching and good virus protection.

  • Boy does this all sound familiar...

  • At least you got a guide... we just have a remote, with an up and down arrow. No guide. I thought Direct TV sucked until I realized it had like, no evening infomercials (that or we just easily changed the channel, unlike surfing through the channels), just constant TV, and the commercials went on commercial specific channels...

  • Haha spoiler, they don't find Bigfoot.

  • How do you guys watch new episodes of something when they come out?? I DO NOT want to wait another 8 f**king days to watch a new episode of American Horror Story or something while I have my friends yelling spoilers out the ass! That's why I have cable AND high speed internet :D

  • LOL! We got rid of cable a lonnggg time ago. Why would we want to pay money for crap? Sure no animal planet, probably the only thing I'd be likely to watch, but no shit either.

  • The BBC is great until you need to go to the bathroom!

  • Hank's manatee poster in the background is probably more interesting than cable nowadays.

  • Why do I use cable? Because I am pushing my bandwidth cap :P

  • I've never had cable. My friends all do, and I don't understand why. I got netflix, and can watch more than one episode a week of the shows I like.

  • As I watched this, I imagined Hank as an old man shaking his fist in the air.

  • Yay! I love the Internet!

  • I totally concur. Being old enough to remember that one of the incentives of cable originally was not having commercials, I can't understand how people would pay for it today. When I rant about this I, my cable watching friends usually just shrug, because now, well, it has commercials.

Never had it since I lived with my parents in 1986, don't want it, but I still get about four to eight pieces of junk mail from Comcast per week at home and office.

  • Jesus. Who has time to watch 5 hours of TV a day? I WANT YOUR EASY LIFE.

  • Nice editing job!

  • It's funny cuz I get free cable in my college apartment and I STILL don't use it. The plug is right there but my TV isn't even hooked into it. I just watch Hulu or Youtube, or otherwise online shows. Cable is overpriced and overrated and they will not change until the people have a true desire to switch to something that makes more sense. Cancel your cable subscription! Use the internet! Cable companies will adapt in order to survive and make all of your dreams come true!

  • @superhero6785 I have a TV plug in my college room. I haven't used it for the first 15 months, after which I decided to buy a TV tuner for my computer. I used it for about 3 weeks then never ever used it again. Can't watch TV anymore, it doesn't make sense

  • I will go back to Netflix only if they get current and all Doctor Who episodes. That should keep me busy for a few years.

  • I agree with you completely Hank and I'm already halfway there. All I have is 17 channels of basic cable. ABC, NBC, CBS, CSPAN, PBS, The Weather Channel, and a few others. It's all I need, and I'm loving the small bill. It's much more worthwhile to pay for high speed internet. I can get more than enough content to entertain me on YouTube alone, let alone the rest of the Internet. The only real value I see in TV anymore is the local news, so that you know what's going on in your neighborhood.

  • For the first time ever, I disagree with almost everything about this video.

  • I should show this to my dad to convince him to cancel our cable, because he uses it as background noise while reading good books. And most of what he uses as background noise is either old (old old old) films on obscure channels, or biased news.

  • If you would've had TV for the past 10 years you'd be less winey, Hank

  • Youtube is better because you get to choose what crap you want to watch and when you watch it. I haven't even had over the air TV in many years.

  • Hey you guys inspired me into starting my own vlogging channel, auto vlog channel, and gaming channel. I recently lost my job, but I plan to be my own boss and start youtube channel and hopefully work my way up and make some sort of a living off youtube. I have abunch of videos that will be posted in the next couple weeks on my 3 channels....subscribe to WaldoVlog, WaldoGear, and WaldoGames and wait until you laugh your butts off, I am inspired my hank and john. they are amazing people love then

  • The only thing I watch on television is Doctor Who which we get provided by the government completely free (well, besides the fact that the government use some of our money).

  • The trouble is, content providers have contracts with the cable companies. It is for this reason they do not make their content available for free, online, with ad support. Also, much of the US still does not have enough bandwidth to get away with ditching cable. Having said this, I believe TV as we know it is destined for death. People want content on demand, for free, or for a REASONABLE fee. If content providers don't start moving toward this, they will become obsolete.

  • What do you mean, "poor Sam"? DO YOU SEE HOW HAPPY THAT DOG IS WITH EVERYONE PAYING ATTENTION TO HIM? Look at his happy face! Even with the collar he is the happiest dog in the world!

  • I'd be all over your idea, except I live in a terrible place where it takes 40 minutes to download a 45 minute podcast... Don't even start on instant steaming or youtube... I type this from a coffee shop... So cable stays, and the DVR with the lovely ad skipping function stays, too.

  • I believe that TV/Radio/Movies/Newspapers/book should all be a single media. In the end all of those thing are just a way to tell a story. Let's work in the best way to tell a story.

  • So true. That's why I haven't watched TV on a TV in 9 months!

  • All good points, I just had to wait for them to buffer to hear them.

  • @Topknot If you spent as much money on internet as you did on cable/satellite you wouldn't have to buffer.

  • The only problem is that Netflix doesn't keep the current seasons of any shows, which sucks.

  • @aintnomuggle thepiratebay does:P

  • @aintnomuggle iTunes, on the other hand, has the latest episodes of anything 1 day after it airs.

  • i disagree

  • There are scientifically supported theories that what crazy people call "bigfoot" are actually a small species of mountain gorilla that haven't been officially "discovered" yet living in the Rocky Mountains. They've found bones in caves and everything. Though the people on that show are definitely the cooky kind of people who are also convinced of the Lochness Monster.

  • Haha, the cracked screen over hank's face in the thumbnail has been my desktop wallpaper for like 3 years! I've fooled several people into thinking my screen is actually cracked.

  • I have that remote.

  • Cable television isn't great, true, but it can be nice in some cases. For example, the place where I live is really bad at providing the regular television stations. Without cable, you get about one channel... that works half the time. With cable, you can access all of the regular channels (plus some extra) and they always work.\

The reason they have both HD and SD is because the HD doesn't work well all the time on nice TVs, let alone old worn down ones.

  • YES I LOVE THAT YOU PUT POIROT ON YOUR LIST OF BEST TV. But no Sherlock?

  • I think the one thing that cable used to do was to bring people together. There was something about being in a group of people and asking if they'd seen Wednesday night's Lost episode and then spoiling it for other people who'd have to wait for the rerun. There's not a whole lot like that on the internet. I can't go to the cafe as ask people if they'd watched that one vlogbrothers video at 10pm last Saturday night without getting strange looks...

  • BITCH BIGFOOT is real

  • what i love about TV is that it provides a finite stream of things for you to choose from. when your possibilities are endless suddenly everything turns into "well, i can watch that anytime" and i end up watching nothing at all. imagine movie theaters having all movies available at all times, forever. you'd spend one month watching things like crazy, then it becomes normal and you lose interest.

it might be a good thing if i did anything more productive with the time i save, but i don't.

  • When my flatmate and I were setting up our phone/internet/cable package at the beginning of the school year, we decided to just get phone and internet. (we don't use the phone, but it was cheaper to get the bundle than just internet. And cable companies wonder why they're not making money.) If we decide to watch something on our actual tv, we use HDMI cables hooked up to our computers and turn on the Netflix. We haven't regretted it for a second.

  • Cable DOES SUCK. Omg. oh my guide.

  • Btw, since you brought up HangGames, are you guys going to finish Mario anytime soon? It's been a while and I know it's a frustrating game, but your commentary is priceless :D

  • In defense of tv and advertising, that is my current career so don't knock it too much. I am an advocate of local stations (mostly since I work in one), but I do agree with a lot of the points you made.

    Also, AWWWW SAD PUPPY!!!

  • "Crash course which will launch January 25th!" Oh finally, that's soon right?

    *Checks date* "HOLY SHI-"

  • I love you. Seriously.

  • I watch TV when I want to lay down and relax, and sometimes something interesting is actually on. But the shows I actually get into and look to watch are all anime...which can really only be found online...unless I want to limit my anime watching to the limited selection on Adult Swim at midnight one some random nights. No, I don't. That is why the internet rocks.

  • @MelevolentAngel

Of course you want Hulu plus! It is amazing and worth all of your hard earned money that you should be putting towards productive things!

  • The only reason I have a tv is so that I can play x-box and watch Netflix. Down with the cable sector! Not even going to call it an empire because I only know 3 people who have it.

  • Why still have cable? Investigation Discovery...DUH!

  • It's easier for you guys in America, your Netflix has many more shows than we do. Also many broadcasting companies now allow you to watch their shows on their websites in case you missed them on tv. We don't have that option in Canada =/

  • I should probably not have laughed this hard, since my mom works for the cable company...but here I sit, discovering why they call it "laughing your arse off". I can actually feel the workout I'm getting.

  • I approve of BSG being acknowledged. Carry on.

  • Already did Hank, only have basic because my apartment complex pays for it. I pay for netflix and sometimes use the free Hulu, still not sure if I want to pay for that yet, thoughts?

  • I love how he keeps adjusting his glasses.

  • I'm honestly surprised when I hear about people still paying for and watching TV. It does suck. It's based entirely around selling crap, and it's almost always either mind-numbingly stupid or horrendously violent.

  • HA!!! I haven't had cable in over a year and LOVE it. I don't miss it, plus I watch less TV because of it.

  • The cone of shame!

  • I have the same remote. And I just wanna say, we have cable, netflix and hulu...who needs all that!?!?

  • No cable = no BBC America = no access to the latest Doctor Who

    ...so no.

  • I can't tell you how pleased I am about the shows you chose to exemplify "some of the best shows of all time" =D

  • sam does not like the cone of shame.

  • 5 HOURS A DAY

    WHAT

    HOW

    Like... 5 FREAKING hours?

  • so true

  • my thoughts exactly. I stopped watching TV 3 years ago, because everything I find interesting I can find on the internet - interactive, quick and broad.

also: Hank, that is a wonderful shirt you have!

  • Super entertaining editing!

  • Yeah well, Hank, some people don't live in "glorious" America and don't even have Netflix where they live.

  • I was watching this on their channel and i looked to the right and i saw a add for Direct Tv ...

  • I am upset that when the shows that you liked popped up, Mythbusters wasn't on there.

  • MASH reruns and Top Gear that's why

  • yeah, the only times i ever watch tv anymore is to have a movie to watch while i paint my nails.

  • how to become a dragon:

    1. marry a policeman

    2. travel to switzerland

    3. by an apple. take one of the seeds in the apple and devide that seed in 19 bits

    4. find a homeless cat i switzerland and feed it the 19th of an apple seed

    5. go back home to your police husband and give him the cat. you will now become a drogon!

    Good luck!!

  • annnnnd this is why I haven't turned a TV on for myself to watch in over 2 years. glad I could help. :)

  • Don't worry Hank, large media companies like Time Warner etc. are a dying breed. Which is why SOPA will never pass. In a few years, I wouldn't be surprised if cable TV is as antiquated as pagers.

  • Insane people wandering around in the woods... Like your brother in North Carolina...

  • Poor Sam! He's so cute! But he is wagging his tail! He's like "Why are you filming me? I don't want to be shown on the internet with the Cone of Shame!"

P.S. Your are awesome if you know the Cone of Shame. DFTBA

  • WHY CAN'T THE REST OF THE WORLD SEE THE BEAUTY OF THIS LOGIC??? DDDDDDDD: Also, the last few seconds were hilarious and adorable.

  • justin, tweak, down with cable and sopa

  • Foolish mortal! My tv has Internet apps! Hah take that commercials!

  • I LOVE YOU!

  • Comment removed

  • ENGLISH AND IRISH PEOPLE: If you cancel your subscription to Sky TV you still get BBC 1 - 4 , Channel 4, Channel 5, More 4, E4, ITV, all of the radio channels, the SciFi channel, Film 4, Euronews, CNN, Russia Today, etc. and LOADS of others COMPLETELY FREE AND LEGALLY. (even if you don't have them now now cause you're irish and you're paying, an up to date paid for sky viewing card actually blocks some channels from ireland)

  • Know what sucks Hank? My ISP is a cable company, they charge me a 7 dollar penalty for not paying for their 35 dollar basic cable package and only for their internet service. So I pay 22 a month for a 15 dollar internet connection. They're still the best I can get where I live.

  • @Acritas2021 don't complain, internet is 40 euro a month here... including phone line rental. And try it in Turkey! 4GB of downloads will cost you 30 euro which is more than what you get paid for a whole day of hard work building a house in the sun there! And you sleep in the house at night because you're from the east of Turkey so you came to the West to find work and you have no where else to go! That's expensive internet!

  • Hey fellow nerdfighters, I'm a senior in high school and have started making vlogs (all too similar to vlogbrothers, but they say imitation is the best form of flattery) due to my senioritis. If you guys could support me with a few views, I'd really appreciate it. Helpful criticism wouldn't be minded either (especially from you, if John or Hank is reading this). Thanks!

  • I don't have cable. I use Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu. SO MUCH EASIER!!! And far less expensive.

  • Well, I don't have to let cable buffer for 3 minutes, then pause 7 times while watching a video.

  • i havent had cable in over a year. just internet, and i dont miss cable. you are part of the internet i watch so TY

  • Angel over Buffy, really?

  • Cooking With Bad Food

    8:15-9:00pm

Mediocre chefs are given canned chicken and gummy bears and told to make a gourmet* (silly Hank) dish and then are scolded by rich and successful chefs because their food didn't taste very good.

    :DD
