Gould vs. Michelangeli: for the longest time I thought Michelangeli's Ballades were untouchable, but over time I came to respect Gould's matchless ability to x-ray Brahm's score and open up all of its harmonic richness and inner voices. It is NOT either/or - listen to both!
Michelangeli is my vote, too, for best commercially available version. BUT... Check out Paul Cantrell on his web site "In the Hands" (you can Google "paul cantrell in the hands" and look for Brahms). Cantrell's playing is great and the recording technique is fantastic. I actually have my order of preference as (1) Paul Cantrell and (2) Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. I do like the Gilels, but the slower versions by Michelangeli and Cantrell are so much more beautiful that I have to go with them.

He's missing the "con moto" in Andante con moto.

Wow---the first 8 measures sound so modern--I don't know much Brahms at all. Time to get educated, so pretty---thanks for uploading this!

He makes the melody surprisingly clear for playing the harmonies at the same volume as it.

Gilels version is more simple to understand if you compare tu Michelangeli. But I think Michelangeli's version is the best of all
