I adore Rosario Dawson, but honestly... she doesn't even *exist* as Mimi to me. RENT is a theater+BROADWAY masterpiece.... Rosario is by fact not a Broadway or even a theater actress. Daphne found her voice on Broadway; she is a 100% pure live-on-stage passion type gal. And Mimi is simply Daphne's character.... nobody accesses Mimi's soul like Daphne.

@Mike0Powell what's even worse about the situation is that almost EVERYBODY in musical theater smokes and hardly anyone realizes it. Adam Pascal smokes. Liza Minnelli smokes. Judy Garland smoked since she was 15. Anthony Rapp smokes. Plus, this musical took place in 1989 correct? EVERYONE in the 80's smoked. She has that 80's sound in her voice. I love each version because they are all unique but it's sad that hardly anyone knows that almost EVERYONE in theater smokes/smoked

What I love about Daphne is she can pour her entire soul into her voice, she could literally have just stood there during the musical and it would've been so amazing most Mimi's have to act as much as they sing to show emotion Daphne portrays all her emotion in her voce and yet she's still an amazing actress. Listen to the contralto at 2:45 when she sings the word "tonight." I saw the original cast in NYC in 1996 and I've never forgotten it, particularly Daphne Rubin Vega's rough, heartfelt, brilliant emotionality. I think that in this part, she was a genius.

Daphne's amazing. I think Jonathan Larson knew what he was doing much better than anyone making comments here when he cast her to be Mimi in his own musical.

I love Rosario too, I think she played the part AMAZINGLY. They both did.

But don't say that Daphne was not a good Mimi when she was the original, cast by the man who wrote the musical himself. He knew what he wanted and what Mimi needed to be and Daphne fit it!

High range does not equal high tone. Freddy Mercury had a 7(maybe 8) octave range, the largest I've ever heard of. Yet he didn't sound gay or have a really high tone.

It's funny, Adam Pascal's voice has aged very well, he sounded even better on the motion picture soundtrack than on the original cast recording.  He's definitely an artist that has gotten better with time.

As for the debate, both Daphne and Rosario did very well with the role, and both of them deserve mad props. That's a really difficult part to pull off, but they were both amazing.

I personally enjoy both versions. I mean, how much better can you get than an original?? Nothing can beat original. I love their harmony in this song but also, in the film, there seems to be more "Umph" in it if ya know what I mean....more bass definitely in the beginning of the song when it comes to the movie version but this is ORIGINAL broadway cast....nothing beats original. So raw and vigorous! The purity and sincerity in his voice makes the character what it is. The 2008 revival cast was very good! The man who portrayed the role of Rogger didn't have as good a voice... but he was a FANTASTIC actor. He overcompensated with pure emotion. Its great. If you have not seen it you should definitely give it a look. If you are a RENTHEAD I believe you will be pleasantly Surprised.

Personally, both Daphne and Rosario make excellent Mimis. Daphne captures Mimi's character. Mimi's been through a lot, and the strain in Daphne's voice pretty much reflects that. Rosario on the oother hand sounds a bit more Mimi's age, and let's face it, she looks exactly as I'd picture Mimi.

mmm. daphne certainly introduced a more realistic mimi, but i liked rosario's portrayal better -- not only did daphne seem too old, but i LIKED that rosario wasn't quite realistic. i thought it was cool that she made mimi into an almost surreal character -- an angel among the unwashed, so to speak. and besides, she was only 19 and rosario provided her with some of that youthful naivete that daphne neglected. daphne has a very emotional voice tho, which i ADORE.
