no one cares what version you like, jonathan larson hand picked Daphne Rubin Vega himself to sing HIS masterpiece. he wouldnt have picked her if he didnt think she could capture the essence and voice of his version of mimi... i say his version because he addapted RENT from Puccini's La Boheme'. mimi was a seamstress in this opera. mark was based off of a painter named Marcello and Roger was based off a poet named Rodolofo.
Roger doesn't want to get with Mimi because he doesn't want to give her AIDS and he doesn't know she already has it. But Mimi has AIDS and doesn't know that Roger does too. Mimi didn't seem to have a problem giving Roger AIDS...yikes.
I adore Rosario Dawson, but honestly... she doesn't even *exist* as Mimi to me. RENT is a theater+BROADWAY masterpiece.... Rosario is by fact not a Broadway or even a theater actress. Daphne found her voice on Broadway; she is a 100% pure live-on-stage passion type gal. And Mimi is simply Daphne's character.... nobody accesses Mimi's soul like Daphne.
I think Daphne's voice is really good, but personally something about Rosario's voice gives me chills. It's not a contest or anything, but the movie version has my vote
@mike0powell I know this has nothing to do with Rent..But alot of great singers of today smoke and they sound better than the 1's who do smore for instance Adele is a smoker and her voice farts on alot artist..also Rent rocks lmfao
@LGKxBEaTzxFTW It's because she was a smoker. It's really a pity when you hear the first workshop recordings to the obc soundtrack, as you can hear the difference in her voice.
@Mike0Powell what's even worse about the situation is that almost EVERYBODY in musical theater smokes and hardly anyone realizes it. Adam Pascal smokes. Liza Minnelli smokes. Judy Garland smoked since she was 15. Anthony Rapp smokes. Plus, this musical took place in 1989 correct? EVERYONE in the 80's smoked. She has that 80's sound in her voice. I love each version because they are all unique but it's sad that hardly anyone knows that almost EVERYONE in theater smokes/smoked
@Mike0Powell ya seriously. I smoke (and I'm not proud of it) but musical theater is too far out of my reach. I love musicals. None of the singers need auto tuning. I knew a broadway singer, Lenora Nemetz (I almost became her daughter in-law) and she told me, "Sweetheart, if you're in musical theater and you don't smoke, you're a black sheep" lol thanks =) I thought it was a cute screen name
What I love about Daphne is she can pour her entire soul into her voice, she could literally have just stood there during the musical and it would've been so amazing most Mimi's have to act as much as they sing to show emotion Daphne portrays all her emotion in her voce and yet she's still an amazing actress. There's a reason she's my favorite Mimi.
I LOVE Daphne's voice. Because it isn't all about the singing for her, she puts the emotions first and that's what makes her great. Although her singing is obviously great as well, Jonathan knew what he was doing when he casted her.
I am so sick of people saying which mimi is better! Alright, their BOTH great Mimis, Daphne was originally chosen for mimi, so it means the way she played the role and her singing were right, so what if she has a raspy voice, she can stil sing! As for Rosario, her acting skills were phenominal, nd she was also a great Mimi, nd just because her voice was recorded doesnt mean it they had to autotune it to sound good, if she couldnt sing well, why wouldnt she be casted in rent?Their bothgreat mimis
I reckon that the people who say they don't like Daphne are just used to Rosario :P Because I remember I was really judgemental with Wicked, I compared everyone to Idina Menzel so give them time and they'll get used to the fact that there are various different Mimis :) For now, just let them say what they want! The rest of us know that Daphne is amaizng or she wouldn't have been cast! also repsect people's opinions guys :) THAT is what Jonothan would have wanted xx
@Charliefisher1987 same. i saw the movie first and i was like whoa i love this! and then i saw the filmed live on bway and i was like i didnt think it was possible, but i love this even more!
Listen to the contralto at 2:45 when she sings the word "tonight." I saw the original cast in NYC in 1996 and I've never forgotten it, particularly Daphne Rubin Vega's rough, heartfelt, brilliant emotionality. I think that in this part, she was a genius.
comparing adam's voice to then and now, he must've had voice lessons so that he could make his voice easier to manipulate instead of bashing the notes out. but the bashing sound was required for the role so i like it as much as his voice now! :)
I like both of them I'm just glad I didn't go buy tickets to see Vanessa Hudgens as Mimi that might possibly ruin RENT for me (But it probably wouldn't :P) So in conclusion Rosario and Daphne are both good in their own way and brought a lot to RENT so I look up to either one :D
I really like Daphne's, Rosario's and Renee's version. They all bring real emotion and something incredibly unique to the song, but I agree that it wouldn't be where it is today without Daphne setting the precedent.

i don't really like Daphne as Mimi ( iknow it was Jonathan Larson decision!) i just don't really like her voice... I thought Rosario Dawson was pretty good but Lexi Lawson's my Mimi :)
Daphne's amazing. I think Jonathan Larson knew what he was doing much better than anyone making comments here when he cast her to be Mimi in his own musical.
I love Rosario too, I think she played the part AMAZINGLY. They both did.
But don't say that Daphne was not a good Mimi when she was the original, cast by the man who wrote the musical himself. He knew what he wanted and what Mimi needed to be and Daphne fit it!
Also, Mimi is not the Mimi we know without Daphne. She designed the character. That is something that Jonathan Larson wanted from his original cast. He wanted it to be real.
Daphne sounds rough. Rosario is definitely a better Mimi. She's got a much nicer voice to listen to. Adam just rocks. I think the movie casting was perfection.
it was the 90s, voices like Daphnes was great at the time. And Rosario is just the movie Mimi, shes a great actress but is nothing compared to Tamyra Gray, Jaime Lee, or Renee Goldsberry.
I still don't understand what you're saying. Lots of guys have really high voices without sounding gay. I.E. Jeremy Camp, Freddy Mercury, Adam Pascal, David Cook.
High range does not equal high tone. Freddy Mercury had a 7(maybe 8) octave range, the largest I've ever heard of. Yet he didn't sound gay or have a really high tone.
The way Adam Pascal sings this song, like he's confused and frustrated, is the way this song should always be. And for Daphne, I don't think it matters what her voice sounds like, I think it matters the emotion in it, and she has a lot of emotion in her voice
It's funny, Adam Pascal's voice has aged very well, he sounded even better on the motion picture soundtrack than on the original cast recording. He's definitely an artist that has gotten better with time.
As for the debate, both Daphne and Rosario did very well with the role, and both of them deserve mad props. That's a really difficult part to pull off, but they were both amazing.
Rent is incredible. I saw it live twice this summer, once from the front row with the rush tickets :D It's so moving; I cried harder than I ever have at anything. This song is really poignant to me right now...annoyingly so, actually...

I personally enjoy both versions. I mean, how much better can you get than an original?? Nothing can beat original. I love their harmony in this song but also, in the film, there seems to be more "Umph" in it if ya know what I mean....more bass definitely in the beginning of the song when it comes to the movie version but this is ORIGINAL broadway cast....nothing beats original. This is pure. Her voice is beautiful just like Rosario's =)
So raw and vigorous! The purity and sincerity in his voice makes the character what it is. The 2008 revival cast was very good! The man who portrayed the role of Rogger didn't have as good a voice... but he was a FANTASTIC actor. He overcompensated with pure emotion. Its great. If you have not seen it you should definitely give it a look. If you are a RENTHEAD I believe you will be pleasantly Surprised.
As one who saw Adam perform in Rent I must say he is AMAZING hands down. Now between Rosario and Daphnie I must say that Daphne originated Mimi, and must be respected and commended, whereas Rosario was more age-appropraite, and pulled off her embodyment well.
i like rosario for the movie role, but even the strain in daphnes voice sez somthin about her character... it shows tht shes gone through hard times and easy times and really does live her life. rosario was a great mimi, also, because when she was little, she livd like this.
Personally, both Daphne and Rosario make excellent Mimis. Daphne captures Mimi's character. Mimi's been through a lot, and the strain in Daphne's voice pretty much reflects that. Rosario on the oother hand sounds a bit more Mimi's age, and let's face it, she looks exactly as I'd picture Mimi.
mmm. daphne certainly introduced a more realistic mimi, but i liked rosario's portrayal better -- not only did daphne seem too old, but i LIKED that rosario wasn't quite realistic. i thought it was cool that she made mimi into an almost surreal character -- an angel among the unwashed, so to speak. and besides, she was only 19 and rosario provided her with some of that youthful naivete that daphne neglected. daphne has a very emotional voice tho, which i ADORE.
i love this ong!! i got to see this musical this summer and it was sooo good!! and i think the best part was that i got to meet rodney hicks who plays benny!! my old neighbor is on broadway andwent to nyu and rodney was like his mentor!! he was sooooooo sweet!!!!!!! I LOVE RENT!!!!

mmm. daphne certainly introduced a more realistic mimi, but i liked rosario's portrayal better -- not only did daphne seem too old, but i LIKED that rosario wasn't quite realistic. i thought it was cool that she made mimi into an almost surreal character -- an angel among the unwashed, so to speak. and besides, she was only 19 and rosario provided her with some of that youthful naivete that daphne neglected. daphne has a very emotional voice tho, which i ADORE.

"Another day" is the best song in the musical
