In boxing.. there is always one who can beat you. The best boxers has been beaten by people who also got beated by the guy who you beated... it all goes in one circle
Vysotsky beat Stevenson on points in the first fight in Cuba during the “Kardova Kardin” . Although the score was 3:2, the pace of the fight forced Teofilo to take two necessary breaks to retie his gloves. The second time was at a class A International tournament in Minsk, in March 1976. In each stanza, Stevenson took a count while clearly hurt, in the final three minutes Vysotsky knocked him out. He was a great amateur- as a pro at that time he would have been average.
@HollywoodParkSteward Visotsky knocked him out huh!I was aware that he beat Stevenson but not by KO.
The Cuban fighters where great BUT within the parameters of AMATEUR boxing. They where basically proffessional amateurs. Their opponents where usually 19 or 20 year olds. If you brawled with them they panicked, and if they where tagged, down they go.The way to fight them would be like Spinks did with Sixto Soria or even Leonard with Aldama.
Will you please elaborate more on the Stevenson KO.
Stevenson was very good but not the best amatuer heavy; three months before the 1976 olympics he was knocked out by Igor Vysotsky and beaten by the same fighter earlier. Vysotsky could not compete in the olympics becuse of eye injury...
IBORU.
What a moron. Dude is living in a shack in cuba now. He could easily be living in a palatial Miami mansion, with a private golf course (at least 9 holes), a dock for his yacht and and other watercrafts and a heliport. Not to mention the 40 car garage.
Duane Bobick could have been a major force in the Heavyweight division a very skilled amateur fighter. imo i think when he went pro a lot of the guys he fought bought into the hype about him being the great white hope and just tried to pole axe him early like Norton did,but he could fight a lot of people on their keyboards regard him as a joke figure when they can get in the ring and do it they may appreciate all Boxers regardless of race or creed. we all bleed RED.
no doubt, Stevenson would have been champion, he was a punching machine, quick powerful and very effient.but we will never know if he could take a knock out punch and come back...
Great amateur but he was straight up. He would have been beat senseless by the Ali of 72-75. After the 76 Olympics had he turned pro Holmes was they guy by the time he would have been ready for a title shot. Holmes would took him apart like he did Cooney.
Stevenson would have beaten a mid-70s Ali if the likes of Leon Spinks could..Stevenson had major leverage on everyone he fought he was like 6 ft 5 in and had a right like Joe Louis straight over the top[watch the John Tate bout} Holmes didnt have the experience in the mid 70s like Stevenson had..but Stevenson was never in a real war like Larry was with Shavers and Norton both older fighters..it would have been very interesting though...
Stevenson would have been to Ali what Norton was. It would have been a close fight. BUT if you put Stevenson against the likes of a brawler like Frazier,Shavers even Spinks. He'll last but a few rounds. The Cuban fighters can't brawl.
@6400az Spinks ? Leon Spinks was a joke and the worse heavyweight champ of all-time in many peoples opinion.. Stevenson would have destroyed him if they fought in 1976 olmp. but Spinks was a light-heavy at that time..Shavers v. Sevenson would have been close , but i give the nod to Stevenson due to staima problems for Shavers..Shavers was barely 6ft had trouble beating tall rangy fighters like Holmes and Ali..Stevons would respect his power and Ko in the later rounds..
I know Spinks was'nt the best of Champs. But his style was tailor made to beat the Cuban fighters. They are stylistically perfect and effective AMATEUR fighters. If you keep your distance they'll pick you apart, but get inside and brawl, they're in ineffective.Spinks did just that to Sixto Soria.Stevenson would have had his hands more than full with brawlers/punchers like, Spinks and Shavers. I think he may have had faired better with boxers like Ali, Norton, or Holmes. .
@6400az You make some good points no doubt, but i still think that if they fought in '76' Spinks would have tryed that swarming-brawling style on Stevenson and he [Stevenson] would have caught him with a straight right like the Gerrie Coetzee-Spinks bout, where Spinks was knocked silly
Gerrie Coetzee, Pierre Coetser and Kaly Knutze !!!..all had similar names. I saw that Spinks Coetzee fight. Really could'nt believe what Coetzee did to him. He then goes up against Mike Weaver, hits him with everything he's got. Weaver barely flinches and KO's him in the 13th?
In 76' Stevenson probably would have won.He was in his prime and Spinks was still too green. I've for one, have never seen such an imposing athlete as Stevenson. Shame his potential was never realized.
@6400az Ironically, 'Big' John Tate destroyed Coetzee when he turned pro after the Olylp...Yet, Stevenson destroyed Tate in the 76 gold medal games... In that era Stevenson would have been a serious contenter as a pro..Larry Holmes was the best at that time, so no doubt they would meet eventually; Either Holmes wins by dec. keeping Stevenson away with a left jab or Stevenson 'catches' Holmes with a right cross and KOs him..Holmes was very ,very tough at that time and hungary
Saw the Coetze Tate fight, thought Coetzze would win. I think it went till the late rounds? After the Ron Lyles, Frazier , Ali, Foremans etc. retired there was no one at the heavies....the mantle of Ali fell squarely on the shoulders of Ray Leonard as the public never accepted Larry Holmes.
Against Holmes, I'd take Stevenson. I think he'd outreach Larry and land that right hand over the top.
Then again, Holmes could take a punch, and when he was hurt,....look out !!
@6400az i can tell you know your boxing history..How about a young pre1989 Mike Tyson vs. a young 1976 Stevenson ? Tyson was prbably the the most explosive-quickess boxer to come along in decades but he did have problems with tall rangy fighters like Bncrh Smith and Bust. Douglas..This is where Stevenson's chin will be tested and Tyson will go for early KO.,my opinion the the bout turns into brawl and Stevenson will lose by 7th rnd by TKO after being hurt early in the bout......
Thank you sir. Always loved sports.Watched the olympics and amateur events ,it's the only time I could see things other than politics coming from my native Cuba.
The Tyson vs. Stevenson bout would hinge on whether Tyson could get inside and unload before Stevenson catches him with his monster right hand.
He did run into trouble with the tall guys, but mostly with guys fought back. Stevenson was KO'd by Visotsky, from waht I hear HE got inside and KO'd him.
@6400az You still live in Cuba ? i remember Jose Napoles left Cuba for a better live and had a HOF career.. Most people dont remember that Tyson was a fabulous defensive fighter bobing and weaving and very hard to connect with [pre-Douglas bout]..Stevenson looked like he was in great condition but did he ever go 12 or 15 rds and did he train for that ? Tyson never won a gold medal but got robbed against Tyrell Biggs and Henry Tillman in Olym. trials but that probably made him more determined
Thank God I was able to get out with my family in the freedom flights of the 60's. Cubans on the island do not have free acces to internet/Youtube.
There was ....Kid Chocolate...Jose " Mantequilla" Napoles, Benny Paret ( went to shool with his 2 sons) Also Luis Manuel. Remember he was KO'd by Nino Benvenuti , ealry 70's?
Tyson had an excelent defense, his head bobbing a bit like Fraziers but better.
Stevenson, I would think could go the 12 / 15 rnds. He was in great shape.
Bobick had a win over Mike Weaver, no slouch. He beat Young Sanford, Bunny Johnson, Scott LeDoux, Chuck Wepner---the guy had over 40 wins, most by knockout, and 4 losses. He didn't win his most meaningful fights, but losing to Norton and Tate is nothing to be ashamed of. Bobick could fight.
how in the blue hell would wladimir even stand in the same ring as foreman? you think cause ali pulled it off anyone can? there is no other man (other then maybe a prime holmes) that could of ever beaten george foreman in hes prime. the onslaught he brought to the table was tremendous, along with the punching power, he was completely fearless, and had a titanium jaw. there was no fighter that could of beaten the man in hes prime, people struggled with him when he was 40 for christs sake! :)
do you even know who ron lyle is? foreman said he hit harder then sonny liston, gerry cooney and joe frazier. the guy came off a 1 1/2 year lay off and stepped into the ring with a great underestimated puncher. just because one person says something like "he was never really good" doesnt mean shit. he gave muhammad ali all he could handle for 11 rounds, and came back after a 15 year lay off to knock out guys when he was 54! :)
that's all fascinating..i note jimmy young managed a quik knockdown of george..n ali,no big power puncher seems to have dropped him too...and yes,i realized lyle was a big guy who cud hit
yes, jimmy young managed to knock foreman down at the end of hes first career in the last round of their fight when he was tired, a shadow of the foreman that fought frazier in 73. as for the rest of your comment you will need to clarify what you mean, as it is broken and im not quite sure what point you are trying to make :)
not even a prime Holmes could have beat Foreman. Foreman was like a really big Mike Tyson and a gold medal winner. That territory was reserved ONLY for Ali! I remember the build up to that fight and watching it live. Ali outsmarted him and knocked him OUT! No small feat! George in his first incarnation was just Godzilla like. Ya had to be there...hence the odds against Ali. Ali=G.O.A.T.
like i said, "MAYBE a PRIME holmes" i could not think of any other fighter that would be able to deal with foreman the way ali did. you had to be extreamly durable to be able to, and i cant think of a man more durable then ali (the whole package wise, great chin, body, recovery) the guy was a monster, no doubt :)
It was ordained. I believe Larry would have been koed. The only reason Jimmy Young beat Foreman is because George was trying to show all he COULD go the distance. Jimmy Young was a spoiler & just like so many fighters that Foreman had koed it was George who had lost his aura of invincibility and was not in his right mind at all...so credit to Jimmy Young who despite his his inability to be an effective offensive fighter of any effect, he had picked up what Ali had exposed and used it.
@duschkoph - Correct. Bobick was the first person to ever beat Stephenson, and the first to ever knock him down (though briefly, maybe only a 1 count) in the 1971 Pan Am games. Teo got his revenge though, and beat Duane every other time they fought, including demolishing him in the 72 Olympics.
