What a legendary movie! I watched this so many times as a kid, and was always so deeply moved and saddened. Watched Johnny Clegg last night, and when they played this song it brought back all the emotion.
The closest modern breed to the old 'bull and terrier' is the Staffordshire Bull terrier so for all intents and purposes the Jock was a staff. The staff is a direct descendant.
The Bull and terrier was breed from the old English white terrier and the Bulldog, this is a Staffordshire bull terrier by everything but name
The attributes of Jock will be very familiar to any staff owner
@bamduvett it will they have to make the film acceptable for children so you wont see the african man over come slave laybour and get his revenge like in this version of the film or jock have a fight with the baboon and jocks owner in the animation movie aint even irish but i gues kids will injoy the film all what matters
I watched it many times. And every time you'd think you'd get used to the movie and not get so emotional. But every time I eatched it, it's the same thing. And this shows how well made this movie was.
In those days most "working dogs" had there tails docked. The boerboel, staffie, jack russel all working breeds. That is where the idea of docking came from becuase most of the time the long tails would get injured and had to be amputated in any case.
The dog in the film is of Staffordshire bull terrier breeding. I'm skeptical that this particular dog is purebred, for it's gait and coat are similar to the Boerbel.
The dog in the book is an old strain bull terrier.
The modern bull terrier (with an egg-shaped head) didn't exist in those days. They all looked like Staffies. The first egg-headed bull terrier with erect ears was born 1917.
@ulster4ever ..l know its a stafford you pancake basher.. STAFFORDS ONLY LOOSE THEIR TAILS BECAUSE OF AMPUTATION!!!...THEY ARE NOT A BREED THAT IS DOCKED.. DO YOU UNDERSTAND!!
Just check that it is the one with jonathan rands that is the one that was produced by south africans and is true to the orignal storie there was also a more "disney" version where jock doesnt die
me and my father was looking all over for the original finally found a copy at game and one at music check the bargain bins but check that it is the original one not the one with the crappy Disney ending there is 2 versions one SA one USA version
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are very similar in appearance to the original bull and terrier dogs. However, Jock wasn't a "Staffie." The bull terrier at this time existed in two basic forms-- the white dog with the downface and the brindle and fawn dog with the less exaggerated face. The fomer was developed from fighting stock in Birmingham as a white gentlemen's dog. The other type wasn't a standard breed until the 1930's. Jock wasn't a Staffie.
The book on which this film is based is also quite good. The reason Jock was docked is because his mother's owner thought bull terriers had their tails docked. None of the bull and terrier breeds have their tails docked.
I think this dog is a cross between a Staffordshire Bull terrier (which is really similar to the original bull terrier) and Boerbel (a South African mastiff, which does have a docked tail and is the same color as this dog). This dog has strong staffie characteristics though.
Homesick. Me too. I'm currently in London. I MISS SA so much! Minus the political kak. I'm sure you can get this on ebay or amazon. I recently just got and finished watching the shaka zulu series. Loved it!
I used to have a dog like Jock. She was a combo between boerbull and ridgeback. She was the only dog we had that knew the diff between left and right. Very smart indeed.
I bought a copy of the original movie when I was in the Kruger National Park last December. I believe there are 3 versions of the movie, two with the original actor and a new one. You should be able to the the later movie online in the US.
Actually, I prefer that the Staffie be called the Bull Terrier, and the other breed should be called the Hinks's Bull Terrier or the Birmingham Bull Terrier. The staffie type is much more similar to the bull and terrier type, of which Jock was one.
Jock was not a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, because that's a modern breed. He was actually the old-type bull and terrier breed from when the bull terrier breeds were developed.

Now I need to try get a copy of the movie!
