  • his the best and allways will be

  • superhuman

  • Oh my God, to have had the chance hear this live! What a huge, immense artist, giving his all, unsparingly, voice and body! Can anyone sing this with more passion, despair, breath control, phrasing, and volume? Before del Monaco there was Caruso (who is apart from them all) and Gigli. His contemporaries were Bjoerling (yes, a great) Corelli (huge voice but no subtlety) and di Stefano (small volume). After him we had Vickers, Kraus, Domingo, and Pavarotti sometimes. Who is there today? No one.

  • @philipc67 There are many examples on YT of Corelli singing with nuance & being subtle,E Lucevan Le Stelle,Non Piangere Liu ,Come Un Bel Di Di Maggio,L'anima o Stanca. FC was more suble than Del Monaco, but MDM had the larger voice. I saw Di Stefano Live in early 1960s,GD's voice was round and full, and I had no problem hearing him as I did Domingo in I Pagliacci in the 90s. Corelli's voice is larger on records, I prefer him live as his voice was not as noisy and he was very exciting. Enjoy

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ¡Bravo!

  • Oh my god I am crying

  • grande mario, un vero maestro di tecnica!

  • There is nothing to say. You are only speechless. He is the greatest.

  • @noregrets54: He's one of the greatest. This recording doesn't bring out his best, but he's up there.

  • The best performance ever!

  • GODLIKE!!!

  • il migliore

  • I'll leave others to argue about technical crap. Suffice to say MDM was brilliant and this was one helluva "Vesti" I wish I could have seen him on stage. For that matter. Corelli too. And Bjorling and Pav. and all of them. Just love the great tenors of the past. Oh, and DeStefano also, on and on!

  • Del Monaco is a mountain :o))

  • :o))!

  • + 10 !!!! IMMORTALE !!!!!

  • non puo parlar

  • He was so good ins the 50's, no pushing, incredibly relaxed, voice flowing like waterfalls but yet with so much passion and strength. Just wonderful.

  • Very good one; but i prefer when he fully gives in to the darkness and fury of his voice. His tone sounds lighter here, almost lyric; imo he's at his best when he goes dramatic

  • ridere sul proprio amore infranto....

  • C'est magique, à mon avis aucun ténor actuel n'arrive à mettre autant d'émotion et de passion dans cette redoutable pièce. 5*

  • I fell in love with Mario Del Monaco as a young girl (Thanks to Opera Cameos on TV). I have many old recordings (and CDs now). How wonderful to be able to see him again on Youtube Betty Girven

  • I am a huge Mario Del Monaco fan. Every time I think I've heard his greatest recording or best vocalism, another document comes along to prove me wrong. This footage is absolutely fantastic.

  • He had a very intelligent technique for doing dramatic roles. He did not have a BIG voice. He had a good, strong, medium voice, but, instead of singing with a yawning, low and heavy sound, he rather strengthened the medium and high range. Sooo, you've got Vickers, Domingo, etc. suffering with the high tessitura, and here comes Mario, avoids the typical struggle to sound BIG, and high, and actually sounds, high and STRONG, veery strong. More than having a dramatic voice, he sang dramatically.

  • THANK YOU!!!! Very well stated.

  • @vergoti20 I'm a musician and must agree in part to that...Del monaco had a big voice in the high register...but in the CENTER (middle register) his voice was not big....listen more carefully and you will notice it ....possibly you will not admit it but yu will notice it

  • @fabriou No doubt that MDM did have excellent high notes,His center register was also BIG.It's fine that you prefer Di Stefano over Del Monaco, but Di Stefano's middle register was not larger as you state on another comment here onYT.Di Stefano had a beautiful round full voice, but GD's center was not larger,as I heard them both live. Also MDM was A dramatic tenor & Di Stefano was a lyric. If you would like to hear a better example of what MDM sounded like Live,Try Forza duet withTebaldi1953. Enjoy

  • @sugarbist i heard MDM in many things...very often in the middle register his rendition isn't well centered as Di Stefano's...by the way..GDS sounded fantastic till 1961...so from 1947 to 1961 he didn't have any problems...starting from 1962 like Del Monaco he got some problems due to allergy...and not for the reasons you say...and please do you really mean MDM had a good phrasing and musicality like Di Stefano??? if so you are a fan of MDM and I have to respect it...but please ....be honest!

  • @fabriou You stated that DiStefano's center was more powerful than MDM's,Now your are stating that GDS middle register is better centered. It does not mean that it is larger.I also never stated the reasons why Di Stefano got into problems as you say I did. I also state that MDM had excellent phrasing&diction, which I stand by.MDM&Di Stefano are among my favorite tenors. When a dramatic tenor such as MDM sings a Vesti La Giubba,he obviously does not take the same approach as a lyric GDS

  • @fabriou I always try to be objective&honest, whether I am a fan or not. There is no doubt that Del Monaco did take liberties with the music, espescially when singing live. There is also no doubt that the lyric Di Stefano sang with more nuance.Other great tenors that took liberties with the music were Gigli Volpi Corelli.Ofcourse we can sit&listen with the open score&appreciate how an artist follows the music. Then again there are artists thatsuccessfully bring there own interpretations to a role

  • @sugarbist I have not had the fortune of listening to any of the past greats live so I can only listen to their recordings and judge from what I hear. I must say that Mario Del Monaco to me has the greatest voice I have ever heard! I did see Pavarotti and Domingo live and in my opinion they have wonderful voices but do not compare with Mario. His voice is exceptional!

  • @Italocanadese48 I must agree,as Del Monaco is my favorite tenor. However,Del Monaco, like many other tenors, only yielded to Enrico Caruso. There are some other great voices here onYT.Lauri volpi,Daniele Barioni,Vasco Campagnano,Antonio Cortis&Mario Fillipeschi make for interesting listening.Enjoy

  • questa è grandezza pura!

  • How stupendous that this exists! Thank you so much for posting it. Del Monaco owned the dramatic tenor repertoire, and his high notes were the greatest and most powerful I ever heard.

  • FINALLY SOMEONE REALIZES THIS. seriously, mario del monaco is so fucking amazing. he's personally my favorite, out of corelli, domingo, or ANYONE. no one pwned the dramatic tenor repertoire like him. GAHHHH he's amazing.

  • i agree completely with you

  • Assolutamente fantastico!

  • In deed it is.

  • Superb!
