Please Help! How do we delete our recorded videos. I looked it up in teh manual, and my brother said there is a delete lock button or something. PLEASE HELP!
my LCD screen is out but the touch screen option still works, I dont feel like paying 300.00 to replace the screen so I could use some help on how I can view the on screen options that appear on the LCD on my TV, at least that way I can still adjust my camera options via my TV. If anyone who has this exact camcorder and can either send me screen shots and step by step instructions on how to do this I would be forever in your debt. Thanks. its a SONY DCR-SR42 HDD Camcorder.
Ridiculous, this guy surely knows nothing about MiniDV (and lots of other things). He says MiniDV tapes "degrade over time" and HDDs don't because they're digital. Well, guess what, the video data stored on MiniDV tapes is also digital, so it also can't degrade. In fact, MiniDV tapes are known to be VERY reliable while hard drives can fail without a specific reason and if that happens you hardly have a chance to rescue your videos.
Don't buy this camera. I bought one about two months ago and I thought it was going to be very good at recording basically having very clear images but it is not good at all. I think that the camera on my Blackberry smart phone can record cleaner video footage than this camera. I will be upgrading to something much better very soon, I have been checking out the JVC they have in walmart and it has very crystal clear picture quality. Anyone who knows anything that is better around $400 please tell
I have this camera and I am not too fond of it. To me it doesnt seem to film in such great quality. I am trying to save up and see if I can -- in the near future -- purchase the Canon Rebel T2i EOS 550D
@bakonfreek You can do all both. I just got this about two months ago and I am so disappointed in the quality of video it records in high quality. Standard quality seems to be better than HQ. Editing software is decent but takes a long time to burn dvd's using the software that comes with camera.
@Cuddlesinct There is a little logo to the bottom right of the screen which is the play button. Press it and then it pulls up another screen, push the logo to the far left with the plus sign. Next the screen with add and add by date shows up look at the bottom and press the one that is second which shows the trash can. Then it should pull up all your pic, then pic the ones you want to delete by pressing them and clicking delete. You use these steps in video mode as well, I hope this helps.
None of you people get it. I've been in communications for 23 years and everybody has to make things more complicated than they are. It's real simple. This is made for the run of the mill average home user. Which by the way works great for that use. Sony does build great products. Not a professional unit. If you want professional quality (which I doubt anyone here would know what that is) then you will pay upwards of $5k minimum. Get real people!!!

@1mtpolarbear If u want a cheap cam tht has amazing quality id say go for the panasonic gs 320. theyre have 3ccd colour and r minidv, so the quality is amazing. they go for about 400-450
Prosumer cams are great too like this one: Sony HVR-HD1000U MiniDV 1080i. It is NEVER good to use a camera that records to an internal hard drive or DVD for pro use. A client has handed me this handycam camera to upload video from and it is truly, a POS for my purposes, I can't get audio to go along w/the video. Yikes~

Tapes will destroy harddrive all the time.. harddrive can't record at as high of a bitrate, and not to mention compresses the hell out of video on the camera before you even upload.
You don't get it do you? the earphone jacks are there so you can hear exactly what the camera is receiving. and the microphone jack is for external Mics that clip on to the person to get clear audio. and if you lose the "base thing" you can't import at all. I would rather get a SD card Camcorder that has the features i want for the same price

Tape camcorders are no less digital than these cameras. Movies are shot on Film in most cases.. that is not digital, are you going to say that film is bad?
This camera is crap, but its also 2 years old. If we are talking about build quality certainly film cameras have history behind them. This piece of junk isnt even full res CCD. I am talking about HD and beyond tech here. Mini DV, VHS, Video-8 are all NTSC limited. Have you seen what a REDcam can do next to film?
I am familiar with the REDcam shot films, yes this camera is terrible it only has a 1/8th ccd. Also miniDV is what I am talking about. not the other tape formats. Tapes can get a higher bitrate aswell, I had a hard drive camera before and the motion was terrible compared to my new cheap miniDV which was smooth.
I have the DCR SR43 (60Gigs HD with zoom 60X ) and found that the zoom at, let's say 10 to 15X not more, takes too much time to accurately focus on the picture. I also have a Panasonic MiniDV cam with a 24X zoom and it is much faster to focus on the target. I should have tested this prior to buying this product. My mistake... Apart from the zoom and focus speed, its usability is great.
No! It's a DCR SR47! My mistake. Finally, the focus appears to be poor in low light conditions... indoor. It sometimes take as much 8 secs to fall on the right pitch!
I have the sony handy cam DCR-SR37 and i have to say it is waaaaaay better than this crap camera, more hdd space, better quality and no 'buffer overload'
Worse camera ever. I cannot record concerts because they are too loud and it cause a "buffer overload" which practically turns the camera off for 10 seconds making me miss most of the concert. Also, my LCD screen becomes bluer and bluer every day, mkaing it hard to see

I wish this would have shown a snippet of what the video and audio quality is like. I've noticed that a person will go on and on about how great a camera is until you see or hear what it can do-- then it's majorly disapointing. I'm amazed at how hard it is to find a good camera for Youtube. No one ever says "This one is great! Check out the video and audio!" Even the reviews posted for cameras on Best Buy are often 50/50. Hey, I just got a newer model today, the dcr sr46, and there only seems to be an av and a usb port, I can't find anything for a firewire or dc or anything like that. There's no docking port on this model, either. Is going through the annoying program that comes with it and downloading the video files on the program then converting the ones i want to wmv then taking the wmvs into another program to edit it them really all i can do? is there no usb-to-firewire option or anything like that?
guys, trust me. this camera is nothing but frustration and disappointment. i bought this for like 800 dollars and it isnt worth half the money. the resolution is really bad, the image quality is very blurry and gray. even at highest quality. you cant edit it with movie maker. the camera is overpriced. the battery life is short. the nightshot light only appears on the right half of the screen because the lens is in the way. when just walking, the hdd protection turns on, interupting the recording

It's a CCD camera so I would think the max is about 90 minutes. Probably between 60-90 minutes with the oem battery. I have seen them sell some high capacity batteries on Ebay but most are from China.

Is going through the annoying program that comes with it and downloading the video files on the program then converting the ones i want to wmv then taking the wmvs into another program to edit it them really all i can do? is there no usb-to-firewire option or anything like that?

guys, trust me. this camera is nothing but frustration and disappointment. i bought this for like 800 dollars and it isnt worth half the money. the resolution is really bad, the image quality is very blurry and gray. even at highest quality. you cant edit it with movie maker. the camera is overpriced. the battery life is short. the nightshot light only appears on the right half of the screen because the lens is in the way. when just walking, the hdd protection turns on, interupting the recording

lol. when i bought in in march 08, the shop told me it was a few months since it came out, so they lied to me. and thinking its 2 years old, its still overpriced as hell..

i got the hdr-sr45 and i like it. but im trying to get the hdr-11. u really love this camera tho. its so easy. but if you do buy it, i suggest to buy an external hard drive, it really helps too.

this camera is kinda bad for taking videos indoor , it doesnt have that much color in the video and a little fuzzy. but the microphone is excellent.

idk about night vision but fisheye is a lens for cameras. it isnt a feature on cameras.

It's a CCD camera so I would think the max is about 90 minutes. Probably between 60-90 minutes with the oem battery. I have seen them sell some high capacity batteries on Ebay but most are from China.
CMOS cameras are better on battery life.

I have a Sony camcorder that uses mini DV tapes,I was told that I can use a fire wire to convert my videos to my PC, however, I have an emachine computer and there is no 6pin hook-up for the fire wire cord. Does anyone know another method to transfer movies from tape to PC?
