Funny, I too came on here to find a good quality version of the song to say that, in hindsight, while this is remembered as Hendrix's first song of his first big performance back in his home country, Mitch Mitchell's drumming at this gig and in this song in particular is outstanding.
@nnooby987 I do believe there is no right answer. Kieth Moon Drum setup is by far one of the most unique (No fucking hi-hat) but Mitchell can play like crazy.
damn straight hendrix is kickin ass and taking names!!!:):):) Hendrix starting with killing floor at monterey is the pinnacle of live music:) liquid orgasm melded into sound:):):) savage dexterity and showmanship of a calibre that is both unparreled and toe curlingly cool in the extreme:):):) bill hicks said "jimi hendrix was an alien! they just drop him off and said! jJimi! SHOW THEM HOW ITS DONE!!!:):):) PEACE,LOVE AND HAPPINESS...YEAH,... HAPPINESSSS!:):) LONG LIVE HENDRIX!:)

ok at 888giordano first of all u stupid u threatin my bro than u give fake nembers out than u pop all this shit noo fuck that private message shit ima let everybody know how pussy u are u talk more than a bitch on pms u are obviously a lil boy or a virgin if not than u must suck in bed or ur a lil boy shut up ooh god shut up and again shut the fuck up if jimi was alive i feel he will slap the living shit out of you like the pussy u are
Your obviously being an idiot if you don't get that when Stevie covers Jimi, he's doing just that. Taking Jimi and adapting it to his own style...just like Jimi did with Johnny B. Goode, Hey Joe ect...
Oh yes....and all the while he's just casually chewing gum like it's no big deal! Pete Townshend said that Hendrix was painful to him, and still is, because he was so good. Pete said Hendrix showed them all how far they still had to go. He blew them all out of the water and then some.
Astounding. He so blew all those other guitarists away. Everything he did is still done today, sounded totally contemporary, except no one still can match Hendrix. It's not about shred, it's about the total package, creativity, musicianship, songwriting, stage presence/charisma, and a totally unheard of (at the time), sound. So far ahead of his time. And he had no idea of his greatness, he just essentially played the blues and channeled the cosmos.
@MarquisEstelle have to disagree. SRV matched him fine. Hendrix was and is the most influential guitarist and no one will ever top that because his music lives on. His skill has been surpassed (that is not a bad thing), but that does not take away from him being a guitar god. I hate the term he is the best ever because that is all based on opinions which are subjective. He is a legend because of what he did and one of the truly great artists of all time.
you're another noob or non guitar player who over looks the finer points of guitarmanship, other than OMGtechniquez.
he's a legend because he knew what to play and how to squeeze each not for what it was worth.
Blues wankers always existed for Hendrix to outshine even before SRV.
if his skill had been surpassed then you would see people playing his big band rhythm/bass/lead r and b style like they want to, technique isn't all lead pentatonic wanking noob.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi i would say srv is a cleaner player than jimi but i dont think he surpassed him. srv never branched out from the same type of playing. i dont believe he had the imagination to change it up a bit. jimi put u in a different world every time and srv took u back to that similar bliss every time u heard him. but like u said. this is all opinion and is subjective
@NANDO218 stevie ray uses a different tone on his strat dum ass, jimmi always put more grit on his. you sound like an idiot. u cant surpass creativity and improv dickhead get out of here you sound like a poser
@888giordano u accuse me of sounding like an idiot when u didnt even get what i meant. and a poser? lol. only posers use the word poser. i wasnt talking about tone at all. i was talking about clean playing not clean sound or tone. i dont believe there is a clean or "dirty" tone or sound. but when u play and slighty mess up, then ur playing becomes slightly unclean. do u get it now? good. now go suck on a lollipop and ponder what i just said because i know u will want to redeem urself
@NANDO218 fact of the matter is, jimi hendrix, mood pending, was a finicky musician. when the tones were off, or he was feeling off, he slipped up, but as you can plainly see in the Monterey set, when he was feeling right, and the tones were right, he was masterfully smooth in his playing.
@TehAl3X and so u agree with me. jimi was sometimes off on his playing. ive never heard stevie play a single note off. maybe someone else has who is more familiar with him but never me. thats all i was saying. and that jimi was more versatile.
@NANDO218 sure. i sincerely doubt you've listened to everything stevie ray vaughan has ever done ever, but sure whatever. who cares? jimi hendrix and stevie ray vaughan don't even sound similar
@TehAl3X Stevie ray had a significant advantage of having superior electronics, string locks, and so on. Jimi had a Strat, a Wah pedal, and an amp. You can't compare the two. In Jimi's time, his feats on guitar were incredible; and still are.
@NANDO218 your not a musician bro I can tell, just stick with listening to music. you will never understand the true meaning of music. stop ruining it for everyone else. hahah jesus christ
@888giordano are u really still going on about this? im not a professional but i do play a little guitar. just shut the fuck up already. if u are bored, then go jerk off.
@888giordano and there is no true meaning to music. there is only a reason for music. music means just as much as a color would mean. to me, the color blue means more than red. jimi was more versatile than stevie so his music means more to me. i can always hear something that sounds completely different with him. stevie's music means a lot to me also because he also has a whole lot of soul and i can really feels his music. rap means shit to me because most of it has no soul at all
@888giordano and u still have no idea what im talking about. or maybe u do but u cant admit that ur a dumbass and or just simply dont know how to shut the fuck up. u butted in on a conversation that had nothing to do with u just to start an argument. i know what u meant by a clean tone. what i was saying dickhead is that both of theie tones are beautiful and it has nothing to do with playing clean or being musically diverse. so shut the fuck up, unrap another lollipop and ponder what i justsaid.
@888giordano and i just read another one of your comments that u sent to urself because u are an idiot. there si no comparison to music u say. so i should stop trying to ruin it. now how the fuck can i ruin anything that srv or hendrix did? and yes there is comparison between anything and everything. thats how human beings live. they put all info they get into categories. category 1. clean playing (having nothing to do with tone) category 2 versatility get it now?
@888giordano nope. i guess u won the argument. i let the annoyance of having to hear stupidity get to me and u kept calm while continuing to call me random names and have fun over it.
@888giordano hahah you obviously no nothing about music, if you did youd know that there's no such thing as messing up when you improve your feeling through your tool. what do you think the knobs switch sets and pick ups on guitars are for dickhead, for choosing tone, you can play as clean as ever and still sound alittle gritty its all about preference genius.Jimi was one of the cleanest guitarists to ever pick up a guitar,he just uses different switchsets on his guitar to make it as u say dirty
@joepulliam1 I've always said he was one of the most underrated drummers in rock, and point people to this concert as evidence. He totally tears it up.

A blues song played in a rock context at breakneck speed, with insane jazz drumming. Only Jimi Mitch and Noel could ever make that work.

Well-stated. There will never be another Jimi. People like him come around once every 1,000 years or so.
His intro on this song is superhuman. The rest of the group set a world speed record, just to keep up with his strumming.
Mitch Mitchell was highly overlooked as a drummer. He was flying on this take. So was Noel Redding on bass.
