Eric Burdon did not write it for sure!!!He got it from Dylan who first record it in 1962 on his first album, and Dylan learnt the arragement from hid friend Dave Van Ronk (R.I.P.) who used to play it in the Gas Light and others cafés in the Village in the late fifties and early sixties, But other Folk singers played it before for over hundred years as Woody Guthrie, Ledbelly and many others but with diferent arregments. no like if you go to wikipediait says no one know who wrote it.but thats part of the apeal the song has to me.that in a way its a song for the entire world to record or cover.

@optimusripe this song was probably written by slaves on plantations, many early folk singers have covered this song, it is very popular.
