@rocketsredglare101 most of these people have lived in the country for at least 7 years....
They have to be "legal residents" (green card holders) for at least 5 years before they can apply for citizenship and then go through the paperwork process for about 2 years before the swearing in ceremony.
America was founded by immigrants... Every American (lest native Americans) can trace the roots back to some foreign land.
It's a tradition that is at the very core of the American society.
