The point is not to move the hips, what matters is an athletic stance and shoulder turn/coiling up the upper body, you wanna create tension. 99% of the tennis coaches suck, and that's being generous.
With little kids, the idea is not impose what is right in ones opinion, but help child find her most natural way to hit the ball. If you look at the video, girl so young hitting most of the balls deep, which shows that she is doing the right thing. Most pros are too occupied to make everyone to have a perfect swing that they forget the simplest rule there is. There is no perfect swing. There is no perfect position. There is only right shot, determined by the result.
look where all the balls ended up, in the net. get her to move her feet and ad some knee bend, which will help with the hip rotation and she will get much more sucess
Sadly enough, trying to teach a girl who has perfect hip rotation and impeccable timing. Time could be better spent on other techniques. Yes, it was a video to show hip rotation, but you can teach the technique better using a student who is trying to work on it so you can show the disparity of good hip rotation and bad.
The backhand technique of the coach is actually flawed. He opens up too fast. You are supposed to lead with the hand and the body turn is supposed to follow. He does the exact opposite, torquing the body and forcing the hand to follow
@Thederangedwang i tried yours and got no power from the hip. you may be describing a perfectly valid technique (which does not use power from the hip) , but if you want to use the power from the hip (which is actually from the oblique abdominal muscles), the hip has to drive (or lead) the arm, for EITHER backhand or forehand. the coach's approach concurs with kinetic chain concept (legs > hip > shoulder). i do realize this is a hard technique to master and requires almost perfect timing.
@hifromhenry I understand. I'm just trying to say that the coach in the video opens up his body to quickly and thus separates his arm motion from his hip rotation. It does take some good timing to coordinate both as you stated. Best of luck working on your backhand.
The hips rotation should not be pushed but is related to the transfer of weight from back to front. Also the weight transfer should follow the racquet head. Not be forced as in this video.
that is what you should not teach - doesnt make sense it all!
What you want is more swinging the arms and turning to the sight without opening the hips to early. i dont understand how you somebody can upload this crap
the shoulders stay to the side and slowly rotate (open) with the stroke
This is exactly what I teach my students NOT to do, she is what I call slapping at the ball, this will indeed come back to haunt her in later years, especially when she needs to hit a ball on the run.
@VanderV i believe this video shows the importance of upper body rotation (ie, hip) but it does advise anywhere to hit using ONLY body rotation. if it did, the resulting technique would indeed look like a slapping motion, with the arms flailing. this video is correctly viewed as part of a bigger context, which includes shoulders and legs.
i dont thing they should rotat they hips or bringing theyre back leg forward at the same time they hit. think about boxing and golf. by the way, maybe you meant the core muscle and not the hip :)
Actually, they're supposed to go at the same time, like most movements in tennis. If anything, the hip will lead the motion, because it starts in the legs and chains up.
I like very much. Looks like very nice progressive and effective teaching. Nice work. The back leg naturally comes through for balance at the end there. Nice!
i know wat u mean, but that coach is following exactly what it said in the modern tennis coaching text book. for the young player beginner to intermid are advice to swing out their raquet and stop at arm extension
a kick is like havein topspin on ur 2nd serve u toss the ball @ 11 o'clock if ur a right hand and 1 o'clock if ur left after the toss u have 2 produce a brush motion up then foward but in 1 motion it takes time to perfect but once u get it its np
But i find it not so good that she must do onlya little armmoveand not to swing till her bag. i found the swing is the importantst cause of the top spin
all i can say is that there will be some really good tennis matches on tv in 10-13 years. the 6-10 year old nowadays seem to be all phenom's with consistency all over the place.
You guys should check out coach kyril's free video on youtube. his new one is pretty much similiar. type in coach kyril in youtube search box and then click his name to find how to get more power on forehand.
i don't agree : i practised tennis for 7 years and i was told not to move during the forehand and the backhand, so no rotation because you lose the control of the ball : when your shoulders turn quickly, the ball is out.
u do need the trunk rotation, when u coil your body for the backswing, u uncoil with your trunk (big muscle). think of a golf down swing. this tip help to prevent students getting too handsy and slap the ball instead of hitting through. try this, it will give u more power, will practice, u will be accurate.
agree. in this clip, when the girl hits a normal bh. you can see that although the trunk lead the fwd swing, her hands catches up very quickly. hard to explain, have to watch in slo-mo.
We're both right. Your method works for social players. Mine works for competitive players. I would definitely encourage young players to develop hip movement, as they will not reach their potential otherwise.
you can develop hip movement as long as you want. But remember : on a court a player is a player : there is no social player or competitive player. Only a player.
And if his shoulders turn before the arm through the ball he makes unforced errors.
So before he rotation, two things are more important : 1 profile position 2 stay still during the stroke until the arm finishes his movement through the ball.
We are all different but in my opinion young players with hip rotation will forget that.
In my opinion young players will turn too quickly because they will enjoy this movement -hip rotation- and unfortunately their shoulders will be face to face with the net too early and they will make errors.
Look at Nadal training on Youtube : he stays still during the strokes.
I had a look at some of Nadal's slow mo's. He generally uses hips on his stationary shots. See: ?v=inQvbT8uEGk
If your teaching a large group of once per week kids, I agree teaching hip movement isn't practical. But there are videos of 5 year olds hitting accurately with hips. Look up Jan Silva.
i know these little stars : i was practicing during the summer with Armel Rancezot, a 8 years old boy who was playing very well- he had beaten many teenagers- .
You can use hip rotation and do whatever you want but your arm must pass before the complete rotation
finally i agree with hip rotation because with this method i think that you can gain lift but ONLY if your legs DON'T MOVE during the stroke and if you begin the stroke with profile position.
In this particular cace, i agree because the complete movement of the arm through the ball create naturally this rotation without moving the legs.
Not moving the legs is probably a bad idea though.
I use hips and knee bend, with a short back swing, for my two handed backhand. I can't take a large back swing because I have too much muscle mass. I find I can get decent power with a short back swing by using hips and knees to put my body weight into the ball.
You've made me notice there are many ways to hit the ball. Some people do very well with all arm, others do well with lots of body movement.
This guy is teacher her not to use her wrist or arm, which is proper technique. Most of the power in tennis comes from flexibility, leg strength, and timing. Look at Mofils, this little girl is almost as muscular as him and he hits one of the hardest forehands on tour.
and theres no way the girl has the same amount of muscle as ANY adult male, there is no way unless the guy is phyically disables which im guessing he is not since he is on tour
This is good because it shows you how to learn to get power just by using body rotation. yes it is good to follow through in actual match play but this is a good drill to see if you are putting ur hips into the shot. if u follow through how do u know if ur hips are going into the shot, so this will show that the hips are going into the shot
its boring if your a beginner playing with a beginner and you'll mostly end up picking balls a lot. But if you know how to maintain consistency and know how to get the ball in then it'll be fun.
Well, if the hand-feed was from the other side (diagonal), then the kid could actually hit the ball. Further, demonstrating the shot instead of repeating the kid's wrong motions also would be a better way to help the student to visualize a correct stroke.
The point is not to move the hips, what matters is an athletic stance and shoulder turn/coiling up the upper body, you wanna create tension. 99% of the tennis coaches suck, and that's being generous.

With this method you lose the control of the ball and you are too quickly face to face with the net which makes you make errors losing lift.

not moving the legs doesn't mean "not moving the legs".
It means that you mustn't change your position during the stroke-but the back foot can easily make you pivot during the rotation.
