Aha, so this was in Hamburg in the 60s? Figures. They must have had a lot of fun there back then. JLL looks like he's thoroughly enjoying himself too.
This guy was incredible. He made all those other cats who played guitars, saxophones, slap bass etc... sound very ordinary. The Rock`n`Roll pumping piano. FANTASTIC!!!
The best performance of this song ever! The English really got into American rock & roll in the 1950s, they loved Jerry Lee, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, Elvis, and especially Bill Haley & His Comets, who were more popular in England than in the USA. These artists influenced the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, among others. John Lennon once said, "If there hadn't been an Elvis, there would have been no Beatles!"
This was the year he went to the Star Club in Hamburg where the greatest live RnR performance ever recorded took place. Available on CD from Bear Family Records.
THIS is the beginning of rock & roll! I was there, and at 65 I'm still rockin'. As KISS says in their new cd, if it's too loud you're too old. Well, it's STILL not too loud! What a fantastic video, thanks!!!!!!!
haahahaha what a fuckin freakin crazy guy who entertained the ppl around him and still entertains ME after 50 years oh my god he rocks the shit out of me man fuckin nice man fuckin nice ;D
haahahaha what a fuckin freakin crazy guy who entertained the ppl around him and still entertains ME after 50 years oh my god he rocks the shit ouf me man fuckin nice man fuckin nice ;D
lol my 3 year old grandson , was playing on keyboared , lol hammering , the keyboared , he even turned round with his hands behind his back , playing lol... he hasblonde curly hair, and blue eyes , he reminded me of jerry lee , so i put on the you tube , my grandson loves him and mimics him now lol..so rock n roll lives on ....
It's obvious from Jerry Lee's repeated signals to an offstage sound guy that he couldn't hear the piano. His solos are done from sight only! The bad sound only succeeded in making him put in a Killer performance, climbing up on the piano (notice in the other vids of this show that there was no lid on it!) and showing the kids how to shake it. Killer show!
According to a long time fan who was there and is one of JLL's friends still today, he was having a go at the back band and asking them to 'pick it up'!
@bailbath thanks for the reply but I doubt an entertainer like Jerry Lee would repeatedly interrupt a solo just to "have a go at the back band." But he was drinking a lot then...
@babamuna66 You don't know whether Jerry was drinkin a lot then or not he may have been but the fact is that someone who was there and still is a fan/friend of Jerry lee said that in a interview that Jerry had trouble with the backup band and wanted them to 'pick it up '. Search for Graham Knight 2004.
@paularichards05 He was mocked and ridiculed on the stage that is why he said "England can kiss my ass". His popularity recovered quickly in Europe, especially in the UK and Germany, during the mid-1960s. This is footage from his concert album, Live at the Star Club, Hamburg (1964),It is widely considered one of the greatest live rock and roll albums ever. Europe forgave him first, I guess they remembered how many times they married their cousins..LOL
@m1kewithaone His first concert in England, you know where the news caught him cold on marrying his 13 year old first cousin. When he got back to America, he denied what had happened and that made things go from bad to finished in the music business in America. This video is of his second visit to England. The Brits seem to let the issue go, but not here. Elvis got out of the service and took over where he left off. Check out my video, it explains everything.
@Allinfun6789 ohhhhh, i forgot about that!! i wonder how old he was when he got married. 'cause even though she's very young, she may be very mature, and if he was only 5 yrs older, well, ?? i'm just sayin' . ok, i'm going to go to your channel to look for your video, but if it's not there, you'll have to tell me were it's at.
@m1kewithaone When Elvis was drafted into the army, Jerry Lee had the whole music world of rock&Roll in his pocket until he secretly married his first cousin who was 13 years old. His first over seas show was in England, and some reporter found out about the marriage and it was all over England then quickly over to the US where Jerry Lee lost his career. I guess it is much better than the way Buddy Holly got taken out.
@Allinfun6789 yeah, buddy holly, what a shame. if we started counting up all the rock stars we lost up to jim morrison in '71, i think we would be shocked at the staggaring number!
This isn't from the Star Club album or concert. It's from the Granada TV show recorded in 1964. It also featured a rather subdued Gene Vincent whivh you can see elsewhere on Youtube

Wonderful! They ruined his name but they couldn't keep him from living up to his title every time The Killer got in front of an audience. I love the ad lib at 6:23: "I would throw it out there but there's too many of you and I ain't got but one! I'm gonna hang onto it."
Remember that if you choose to call JLL a pedophile, you will have to call a majority of the southern population of his generation pedophiles. Marrying at a young age was perfectly normal, as it has been in several other cultures too. Falling in love at such an age isnt abnormail is it? They married right away because they considered it the proper thing to do.
jUnK-Tabloid-stereotypes of Pedos & Adultos are as meaningless as the rest of the jUnK-media. As the Killer rightly says, "Like me, loathe me or kiss my ass - I don't give a damn !" And as he rightly said to hot-to-trot Adulto Myra, "You can shake it, but don't break it."
My dad was at this performance... Jerry Lee inspired him to play boogie woogie piano. My first ever gig was when my dad took me to see Jerry Lee in 1976.

Where do you live? I'm trying to get a band together, and I need someone to play piano for me. I had a band in Redding, CA. A lot of my band members left me band, and did their own thing, and I only have one member in my band now, and he still lives in Redding, but I live in Medford, OR. Hope you can join my band.

UK Rock'n'Roll record dealer Paul Sandford is next to Jerry Lee on this clip. So cool to chat with him about the Killer, then buy some rare 45s.
Rock'n'Roll was at it's best and most genuine in the 1950s, everything that came after has been corporate, money-grabbing fakery.

I have no idea that you play like Jerry Lee. You're welcome to join my band if you want to. I don't know where you live though so I don't know how the band can practice.
