that is the original way the song was sung ... in all due respect it's what used to be called a "Negro-Spiritual" song that was sung in the cotton-fields ... James Taylor is being true to the song's roots.
LOVE this! great to find a video on here - WITH the fab Arnold, Kate and David lending their silky vocals.... just cranked it up this week on a school morning to get my 14 yr old awake (and in the Christmas spirit!) ~ JT's voice was made for this! he gives it just the right fusion of reverence and funk - as always: perfection! thanks for posting!
April 5, me too. am still watching this x'mas video of James Taylor, no wonder, he is respected in US, a clean living singer, w/ no taint on his life (except that 'fire and rain' episode) but he has overcome it w/ flying colors
I love that JT does that in his songs, cries out to God and Jesus, and then states that he is spiritual, but belonging to no particular religion........Now that makes him even cooler than he was in the first place..AWESOME! Great version of this song!
you can sing out to Jesus, and sing spirituals and not be considered a Christian. James Taylor is beyond a religion, he surpasses that with his interpretations and performances. Definitely not limited by a religion, this guy...Thank God!
Always nice to hear Bissonette grooving like this. Drum fill at 2.40-2.50 is unreal. Floor tom/snare drum drop at the end of the fill made me laugh at the end it was that good! James has exquisite taste in drummers
My first time to see this clip of JT. It sounds as if steve gadd is on drums but I recognize that I guess it's greg bissonette. Who's playin the piano at the back of James Taylor? Thanks
Larry goldings I guessed regularly plays with JT. But in this particular clip I think the piano player must be Dave Grusin, correct me if I'm wrong because the pianist here looks older than Larry and I recognized also the structure of the fingers and how he uses his wristwatch at his left arm, he must be Grusin. And the way he attacks the keys, he's full of gray hairs also and the structure of his face is typical of Dave Grusin. Thanks anyway!
@farley528 I think he is Dave Grusin, may be, but not Larry, in the same show Larry played the hammonds (Jingle Bells), and in Jingle Bells I clearly see he is Dave Grusin, must be him on this take also, but I may wrong, dont know
"Guess I was a seeker, sought Him both night and day. Ask the Lord to help me - he showed me the way." Watch his face on "He showed me the way." I could be wrong, but there looks to be so much emotion and personal connection for JT behind these lyrics - at least his face makes it seem so.
if you'd like to hear a guy who can puts a few notes together just his voice and guitar check out David Wilcox, I'm a huge JT fan and I really like some of David's work
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play and organ. Tonight (Christmas Eve), I attended a service at a local Lutheran Church. We sang this as the Hymn of Praise. It is #290 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Just thought I'd share.
I am so glad James survived all the turbulous years. What a talent. Voice like silk. Even my nephew who is 26 years old, says he does not know one women who is not in love with James Taylor. No one measures up to James yet! hahaha!
Dave Grey, John Mayer, Jason Mrz, Newton Faulkner, Piers Faccini, Jack Johnson, Donovan Frankinferter, all try to be JT's, Mayer is the only one that comes close.
I should add that I think that Mayer is more talented in some ways than JT.
Wonderful video with BEAUTIFUL song thankyou walkingbear for sending to me love it warm huggs :)and thankyou attybong for posting this warm blessings to you and all your family and a Merry Christmas & New Year :)
me too. wonder if he's become a christian? he probably believed even when he was young. he was crying out in fire and rain: "won't you look down upon me Jesus, you gotta help me make a stand....i wont make it any other way"
Merry Christmas, happy holidays and Merry Everything, everyone.

In 1989 James Taylor bought three Olsons guitars: an SJ, an SJ cutaway, and a Dreadnaught.

He has two custom Olson guitars and each cost approximately $25,000.00. He probably didn't have to pay anything, however.
