C'mon!!!! I am watching wright now my videos from my Sony hx5 and they are way better than this on your video!!! Something is wrong with your upload of video quality regarding hx5v!
I think both cameras do a fairly good job. I have the HX5V and my only issue with it is the wind noise that gets picked up. Anyone found a solution to limit or eliminate wind noise?
How come every review I've read about the Zs7 talks about how horrible it is in low light? But yet every video I've looked at shows just the opposite... It looks better then my Canon HF200 camcorder in low light situations. I thought the sony was supposed to be better due to it's "Cmos" sensor and 60i recording, but it looks like crap next to the Panny. Not sure what to think... andin this video the sony looks so washed out. Yuk
One more thing, I'm wondering why you used 1440x1080? This is for HDV footage and for non square pixels. This will mess things up with the sharpness and final output. Anyway, just my 2c and thanks for doing the tests. You can see my video shot on the panny ZS7 (my buddies camera) at v=a5Wx1nHSKuE
I think the panny footage looks a little blurry, can't speak for the sony and I have not used the camera. that's fake. The video used in the example for the Sony camera is not in full HD 1980x1080. Amateur Review. The actual outcome of the video is much better and clearer
Sony colors are more saturated and vibrant which is good. But the Lumix seems sharper, especially in the middle when there is a tree that is photographed, and looking at the bricks in the water park. During pans down the building, I think the Lumix stabilizer did a better job. Disclosure : I bought a zs7 for xmas.
Is that really the Sony DSC HX5v? Because in other clips I've seen the video quality is amazing and full hd. This looks really, really bad, maybe something went wrong with the conversion of the video or the render or something because that does not look right ^.^
The side-by-side thing was cool, but having used both cameras, I don't believe this was an apples-to-apples test. The HX5V has a 25-250mm optical zoom range, while the ZS7 has a 25-300mm optical zoom range. In addition, you shot most of this video with the HX5V zoomed in even closer than the ZS7, so the ZS7 was always closer to its sweet spot than the HX5V was. Throughout this video, I never saw the ZS7 as close to its design limits as the HX5V was.
The sqare glass building helps a lot to see the difference but still so hard to decide, I like the color more in the sony but looks like panasonic have better resolution, maybe its the contrast... And looks like sony handles better the image when there is a lot of sun light. Damn I just cant decide...

I'm not sure this video does justice to either camera. I'm a panny fan and you can see some HD shot in the Utah, desert here, looks better than the footage above in my opinion. The problem is editing programs handle the video differently and you must convert the footage to an intermediate format to edit as even modern computer are too slow to edit raw footage (AVCHD lite) from the panny.
See footage on my YouTube channel - JacanaProductions
I don't know which one to go with. They both have their drawbacks. You think one is the winner and then in the next clip you see it failing. argh, how do you choose?
(saw parts 6,7 and now starting at 1).
What's your pick Mike? And thanks very much for the clips!
@MrLimpanS yes i am. maybe because the video on the right is easy to look at because of the more saturated colors, the video on the left is sharper it has more details makes my eyes feel tired watching.
I can not confirm the above shown lack of Sony quality. I received my Sony HX5V a couple of days ago and immediately took a zoom-test video (which you can watch on my home channel. ( "WOW! Sony Cybershot DSC-HX5..."). I'm totally thrilled with my choice, although I',m lacking some editing skills...:) The quality of this camera is awesome...
How do you shoot videos in HD? Is it already set on it or do I have to do it myself? I uploaded a video on here but when you go to change the resolution it only shows 360p and 480p, which leads me to believe my camera wasn't shooting in HD.
I bought both these cameras specifically for the video. The zs7's quality was terrible. It looked very 'digital', like it was (obviously) taken on a P&S. The HX5v's 1080i video was a thousand times better, even when comparing both at 720p. The Sony vid looked like it was shot on a camcorder. I was honestly surprised considering the reviews on the zs7. This video comparison does not show what you'll see on your hd tv. Don't choose based on a youtube video. Try them both for real if you can.
i noticed the sony sticks to an object when you scan up and down. i know this is because of the way the sony is built to not bounce around when the user is moving alot. but doesnt the panasonic have that same tech? i make offroad videos so that feature is perfect for me
I have the Panasonic ZS7. If you listen close to the lens does it make a leaking sound like from a pressure gas tank? It click and make constant noise. Don't know if mine is defect. But it take nice video but with a stream sound. I sometime want mono instead stereo...
I just bought the Sony HX5V yesterday, its my own fault for not doing some research first, but this camera is going back.I hate to return it,it's an amazing camera for video and pics, but the sound quality at concerts is horrible and unacceptable!! Can someone please recommend a camera that has excellent video and sound quality.
Thats matter of opinion, how u change the color, brightness and all other things in the both camera settings to be a better picture or video record ... this Comparison is not crucial ... I have see another day and night records from Sony HX5 here on youtube and that was so much better quality like this here !!!
It's obvious to me that Panasonic is brighter, crisper and more natural looking. Sony is soft, warm and looks of low quality. Panasonic wins hands down for me!.
This a a great idea to make a legitimate comparison of these 2 popular cameras - HOWEVER, unless both were set on complete default auto while videoing, then without knowing the settings you selected for each camera a comparison such as this is quite worthless and can easily mislead anyone who views it. Were both cameras on full auto while videoing?
@MJPMotW I use all the primary, and some novice video editing software. (i.e, Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, Ulead Video Studio) You also need to have a ton of video converters when your editing software doesn't import your vid. I had a render problem with Vegas 8, but Vegas 9 seems to handle avchd for editing.
more vibrancy with colouring in the panny and also the water appears more realistic in panny too.. clarity better with the panny, tough choice though as i have heard that the gps on the panny is mostly out of range by a half a mile in most areas, and the panorama is pretty quirky on the sony, one good thing though with the sony is that it also utilises the sdhc cards as well as the sony pro duo
I'm thinking about getting the HX5V, but I was wondering if there was a time limit on how long each video can be. For example, if I have a 16gb memory card, can I record until the card is full? Or is their a time/file size limit for each recording session? Any help would be appreciated!

@k9education Well it is not a law, but european markets would have to pay a higher tarif because a device that takes more than 15min. of video is considered a movie recording device and have a higher tax than a photo camera.
Panasonic DMC TZ10 ZS7 better and background better, no so pale as Song. The problem is Panasonic sensor , is it a CCD. Sony HX5V used CMOS. I am scared the CCD with problem, because my daughters' canon A70 worked only 1 and half years and canon IXUS also finished. Nikon is made in China, Sony also made in China. For my Sony CD walkman it worked for 4 years and my Aiwa one year finished.
Side-by-side, I preferred the Panasonic; separately, though the Sony has a murky orange-white to the Panasonic's piercing blue-white, I found the Sony easier on the eye. The Sony's barrel distortion was less noticeable, here, than in some of the other clips. Based on this clip, I could live with either camera, though the sound quality with the Panasonic was better.
I would want tweak the Sony's contrast during post and wonder if anyone knows if the Sony comes with software that allows that?
@OnceAPunAThyme The Sony cameras come with very good software...prefer it for the most part over the software that is packaged with Canon dSLR cameras.
I hope i can save some people some money with this post.
The mic on the HX5V camera is terrible. I am not just talking about it's placement, but the audio quality. If you are planning on shooting video of anything that is above average volume (especially concerts) this camera is worthless. Video and photo quality are great, but the audio performance of this camera makes any concert video unusable.
Again, do not buy this camera if you plan to use it for concert or loud/windy videos.
@o0legos0o I concur. I did a few tests using my car stereo as my sound source. The Sony sounded like a clock radio whereas the Panasonic sounded much fuller and richer. For a pocket cam, the sound is really quite good on the ZS7. I do prefer the Sony video though. Why can't someone make a camera that is best across the board? (I know, I know ...)
@k9education My brother's solution is to record all audio with a separate high quality mic and then mix them in a video editor. I do really like the HX5V video too. Sad that you have to inconvenience yourself with separate audio equipment.
@o0legos0o Yes indeed. When you get to that point, you might as well use a dedicated camcorder which will provide far better video and sound than any P&S cam.
@k9education He would, but it is a whole lot more difficult to bring a camcorder into concerts than a digicam. Plus camcorders take horrible pictures. The picture quality of the HX5V is outstanding, even in low light.
@o0legos0o It is true that a lot of events won't let you bring in a camcorder and camcorders do take terrible pictures. However, the HX5V's video performance in low-light is abysmal. The still photos in low-light are marginally better than other P&S but miles behind cams with bigger sensors like the Canon S90 or Panasonic LX3. Essentially some novices are tricked into thinking they are "outstanding" by wiping out all of the noise using NR which also wipes out all detail. I own an HX5V btw.
@popxchin Why? Is it because of the different resolutions? I think everybody knows this watching the videos, and take that into consideration. Only a small amout of people will comment, so we really don't know how this presentation is really impacting the watchers.
@chixyman I know, I sympathize with anyone having to buy one of these cameras, it really is based on your need and whether daytime or nightime, battery life, photo vs video dominated imagery, etc. Sometimes its better not knowing than knowing how they compare at this level of detail. How the camera feels in one's hand is also important.
f you are comparing cameras, why not show the Pana and the Sony both on there own highest resolutions? when i bought my DSC-HX5V i didn't start shooting my videos in 1280x720 because the TZ10 can't do 1080. I have had HX5 for almost a month now and the video quality I'm getting is far superior to the footage in this test.
I work as a freelance Video Camer Oporator use cameras like the PDW-530P and all i wanted was a compact camera that had good qulity video recording, i had my eye on the HX5 from before it was relesed, as soon as i used it i had made up my mind. i can highly recommend this camera. I'm over the moon with it. the GPS function is outstanding, transfer jet is amazing, low light shooting is second to non, and al from £320 from any Sony Centre.
@theostringer The Canon S90, Panasonic LX3 and Fuji F70EXR easily best the HX5V in low-light. If you remain in the compact class but remove the "must fit in your pocket" criteria, then their are a number of other cameras that will best it also. I do however think the HX5V provides good low-light photos considering its tiny sensor.
@theostringer Yea, 1080P is quite nice. If all your looking for is video (during the day) and need the 1920x1080p (which I never shoot at) then sony is attractive. But battery life, general photo quality issues start becoming a focal point for me. I already have low and high end cameras, so no rush to wait for me.
these comparison videos are great, I guest that, you must be spend a lot of time to make them, panasonic looks better then sony, in panasonic a leaf is a leaf, but in sony a leaf is a spot of green color. by the way, can you tell me what software did you use to make these videos?
@urbanwayfarer No problem, I learned alot with this project, not just about the cameras, but about video production for multi-camera recording. Alot of small issues present themselves such as synchronizing the footage (both video and audio), camera positions, etc. Well worth the time.
There are quite a few variables that were not included in this comparison which (as with so many similar comparisons) practically moots out the results: AVCHD? Bitrate? Resolution? (Notably, the Panasonic maxes out at 720p, while YouTube has the capability to stream at the Sony's native 1080p. Why did you title your reviews with [1080p]?) EV? These needed to be broken down on each respective camera for the actual footage you shot, and without a perfect match, the results here are useless.
@hpaulmoon Yep. My initial testing was to compare the actual optical performance of each, and to demonstrate the insane light streaks. As my project developed, the issues of original capture rates, rendering process, final render formats began to take hold. I suppose, since Sony stepped up the rez to 1440x1080, that made me render to that rez. My ref to 1080P is accurate, and is incidated in the pre-text of vids.
@hpaulmoon I would also add, I do intend to upload each of the clips as stand alone clips, and to render them to their native formats 1280x720 (pana) and 1440x1080 (sony). Again, 1080 P could mean either 1920/1440x1080P. Bit rates were at 14Mbps in rendering. Again, the video you see in youtube is 1440x1080P.
@mikesmultimedia I really don't see what the point is of purporting to "compare" the relative strengths of each camera when you are throttling down the capability of the Sony toward the objective (stubborn?) of making the Panasonic seem superior. As you note (but as the video fails to note), the Panasonic maxes out at 1280x720 resolution. And in comparison to the handicap you imposed on the Sony, it shoots at 1080i/60 (which is 1080p/30) with a resolution of 1920x1080 at 17 Mbps.
@hpaulmoon@hpaulmoon You can't really be this obtuse. Downsampling didn't make the Sony video darker nor did it cause the water in the fountain to blur. It didn't turn the blacks to gray or obliterate all low-light detail. Likewise, he didn't cause the Panasonic to experience blooming or make entire buildings disappear in the highlights.
@hpaulmoon This wasn't a pixel-peeping "which is better under a microscope" comparison and rendering each at their native resolution would have contributed absolutely nothing to the comparison, nor would it even have been possible to do a side-by-side within a single video.
@hpaulmoon p.s. I don't believe he made either cam seem "superior." He made a clear point to denote the blooming issue with the Panasonic and he stated on a camera forum that he actually chose to keep the Sony. Therefore, your implication that he is less than credible is completely unfounded.
@hpaulmoon You'll have to email me off line to continue commenting on this forum. You have some good point, but reduce your remarks against other visitors. I'll concur with k9education remarks below. By the way, I personally would not shoot the Sony @ 1920x bc its just not useful in my projects or for home video. The end presentation will not be burned to HD disc, so I personally will keep it down to 1440x. Also streaming 1920 on a home network demands too much bandwidth as well.
@hpaulmoon For the Side by Side video comparisons, I chose to record Sony at 1440x1080, closer to Panasonics max of 1280x720. In this case, Sony has already been given the advantage during the original recording session(s). In any case, as was planned, each of the clips are being made available in their stand alone formats respectively. See their solo videos as they are rendered.
@hpaulmoon Lastly, outside of "resolution" issues, what again is most pronounced at any resolution is the Sony's Lack of low light performance, and the Panasonic's issues of light streaking. These traits will show on the original, and any subsequent renders. Also, as indicated in my descriptions, the 1st few parts were at AVCHD, where the last two were using the alternative rec formats.
@BiloDiscoda I'm waiting for the Panasonic to come out with at least HD @ 1440x1080. CCD vs. CMOS is the answer for the light streaks, but not sure if Pana will address that as Sony has. I've also noticed the streaking in Movies, but its horizontal? Watch Star Trek 2009.
@hpaulmoon Oh, by the way, it sounds like you know what your doing. Perhaps you can prepare your own Side by Side testing on a couple of cameras, and instill those standards of which you believe are pertinent. This project has been very extensive, and time consuming, for what little is actually being shown. Workflow and time constraints are in high demand.
@hpaulmoon Considering that Sony's AVCHD is 1080i and NOT 1080p, it seems you are not even aware of the basics. If the results here are "useless" then you're even more ignorant than your initial post implies. The comparison clearly shows the strengths and weaknesses of each cam which is all it was intended to do.
@k9education After a K-9 education, you'd find that Sony's implementation of HD capture, across its full product line, is not only full 1080p but more versatile. Using any competent NLE (know what that means?), 1080i/60 interpolates to the exact, precise, identically same stream as 1080p/30. Yet if you need to want to adjust playback speed to take advantage of a higher frame rate, you have 60 fields per second to work with.
@hpaulmoon If you believe that 60i is equal to 30p, then the answer would still be: you. The data captured is *not* the same Gunga Din. 30p typically offers better resolution and sharpness while 60i is generally better with motion. technical aspects aside, common sense should tell you that if they were "identical" then different results would not ensue.
@k9education hpaulmoon appears to want to take this forum in a personal direction and has been advised accordingly. I was interested in his remarks about the differences in 1080P/I, but his last remark was uncalled for.
@k9education As I monitor these comments, I've had to become a moderator as well just to keep things civil. I've let hpaulmoon know to keep the remarks professional, and to avoid shooting the messenger. In other posts he also has been a bit loose tougued and will have to contact me off line to continue. He makes some critical points, but has de-volved to personal attacks and flagrant misrepresentations about the process without asking questions or raising issues objectively and appropriately.
@wuergdenlurch I'm working on getting my hands on the cameras again to continue further testing, not only on Macro, but on the Image Stabilization modes as well. Hope to be able to continue the work.
Not intentionally i think, but it got a stereoscopic effect that works fine for me. Of course It doesn't work for all scenes.
Thank you for sharing this. I prefer the Panasonic. Unluckily i destroyed my old Canon A640 ;(, so i'm searching for a good replacement with a little bit of crossover to the video. Are there other valuable good cameras that are matching these two.
@t8ls Not sure if you were talking audio vs video regarding teh stereo effect. The side by side videos actually play both audio streams at the same time from both cameras. I left it in, because it wasn't too bad, to provide authenticity, and to assist me with timing the playback of each side by side. In the standalone Solo version I've posted, the audio is as recorded by each camera.
@mikesmultimedia just the stereoscopy like in the IMAX. In some Scenes you adjusted the cams perfectly for this effect. You just wanted to make a comprehensible test (and of course you did), but you did somthing more - stereography, what i personally like very much. So i'm talk about the two pictures together. Thank you!
Overall the Panasonic shows a bit more detail and the color are more vibrant. However, in typical Panasonic fashion, the skin tones rendered are inaccurate. You have that usual zombie. Still, I would certainly choose the Panasonic based on this comparison. Thanks for sharing it.
@k9education I like the zombie descripter. Since Ive invested time to do this study Ive had to build a vocabulary structured on evaluating visual imagery. One area I need to study is the CCD v CMOS sensor issue resulting in the light streaks in the TZ10
Thanks for your efforts. I prefer this testing methodology over trying to compare quality based on videos shot separately in circumstances that are similar, but much further from identical than is the case in your samples. It's great that you have more tests planned in different conditions.
@nefs2 If I had the extra extra time, I'd like to look at the image stabilizers in both cameras. That would require a similar side by side but under vibration conditions.
The detail in the water jets goes to the Panasonic (most noticeable when you pause the video), but the Panasonic tended to blow highlights worse than the Sony............... The sky color seemed more accurate with the Sony as well.
@myozone If it wasn't for the light streaking, I'd still have the panasonic. I will consider the light streaks, but only if the panasonic was shooting at a higher HD (1440x1080 or more).

Is it raised and is not the gain shown brightly?
To satiety when it is a large screen though it is beautiful when the edge reduces because it is tough.
It is HX5V if it says which remains the step.
Is it a thing that the length turning can be done that Panasonic is excellent.
Luccccccccccky 1 year ago
It is seen fabrication or an intentional deterioration.
Or, a recording wrong mode and it makes a mistake in conversion.
The image quality difference of both models is not such feeling.
However,SONY must be more excellent.
Because sample doesn't reverse because there is tone either.
Do it take, do it edit, and did not it write it with mp4 30p to the guess?

This a a great idea to make a legitimate comparison of these 2 popular cameras - HOWEVER, unless both were set on complete default auto while videoing, then without knowing the settings you selected for each camera a comparison such as this is quite worthless and can easily mislead anyone who views it. Were both cameras on full auto while videoing?

What software did you use to edit the AVCHD from the Sony?
MJPMotW 1 year ago

@soyme There aren't any limitations on the US version afaik. The EU version is limited to 15 minutes by law.
k9education 1 year ago
@k9education Well it is not a law, but european markets would have to pay a higher tarif because a device that takes more than 15min. of video is considered a movie recording device and have a higher tax than a photo camera.

@abysmal660 I meant it is law that to be considered a camera, it must record no more than 15m. Perhaps law is not the right word for Europe though.

For my Sony CD walkman it worked for 4 years and my Aiwa one year finished.
tamyk007 1 year ago
Side-by-side, I preferred the Panasonic; separately, though the Sony has a murky orange-white to the Panasonic's piercing blue-white, I found the Sony easier on the eye. The Sony's barrel distortion was less noticeable, here, than in some of the other clips. Based on this clip, I could live with either camera, though the sound quality with the Panasonic was better.
I would want tweak the Sony's contrast during post and wonder if anyone knows if the Sony comes with software that allows that?

@OnceAPunAThyme The Sony cameras come with very good software...prefer it for the most part over the software that is packaged with Canon dSLR cameras.
dannysees 1 year ago
I hope i can save some people some money with this post.
The mic on the HX5V camera is terrible. I am not just talking about it's placement, but the audio quality. If you are planning on shooting video of anything that is above average volume (especially concerts) this camera is worthless. Video and photo quality are great, but the audio performance of this camera makes any concert video unusable.
Again, do not buy this camera if you plan to use it for concert or loud/windy videos.
o0legos0o 1 year ago
@o0legos0o I concur. I did a few tests using my car stereo as my sound source. The Sony sounded like a clock radio whereas the Panasonic sounded much fuller and richer. For a pocket cam, the sound is really quite good on the ZS7. I do prefer the Sony video though. Why can't someone make a camera that is best across the board? (I know, I know ...)
k9education 1 year ago
@k9education My brother's solution is to record all audio with a separate high quality mic and then mix them in a video editor. I do really like the HX5V video too. Sad that you have to inconvenience yourself with separate audio equipment.
o0legos0o 1 year ago
@o0legos0o Yes indeed. When you get to that point, you might as well use a dedicated camcorder which will provide far better video and sound than any P&S cam.
k9education 1 year ago
@k9education He would, but it is a whole lot more difficult to bring a camcorder into concerts than a digicam. Plus camcorders take horrible pictures. The picture quality of the HX5V is outstanding, even in low light.
o0legos0o 1 year ago
@o0legos0o It is true that a lot of events won't let you bring in a camcorder and camcorders do take terrible pictures. However, the HX5V's video performance in low-light is abysmal. The still photos in low-light are marginally better than other P&S but miles behind cams with bigger sensors like the Canon S90 or Panasonic LX3. Essentially some novices are tricked into thinking they are "outstanding" by wiping out all of the noise using NR which also wipes out all detail. I own an HX5V btw.

I definitely prefer Panasonic to Sony, though light streaks of the former are very annoying. I would buy Panasonic I suppose.

f you are comparing cameras, why not show the Pana and the Sony both on there own highest resolutions? when i bought my DSC-HX5V i didn't start shooting my videos in 1280x720 because the TZ10 can't do 1080.

I'm over the moon with it. the GPS function is outstanding, transfer jet is amazing, low light shooting is second to non, and al from £320 from any Sony Centre.
theostringer 1 year ago
@theostringer The Canon S90, Panasonic LX3 and Fuji F70EXR easily best the HX5V in low-light. If you remain in the compact class but remove the "must fit in your pocket" criteria, then their are a number of other cameras that will best it also. I do however think the HX5V provides good low-light photos considering its tiny sensor.
k9education 1 year ago
@theostringer Yea, 1080P is quite nice. If all your looking for is video (during the day) and need the 1920x1080p (which I never shoot at) then sony is attractive. @urbanwayfarer No problem, I learned alot with this project, not just about the cameras, but about video production for multi-camera recording. Alot of small issues present themselves such as synchronizing the footage (both video and audio), camera positions, etc. Well worth the time.
mikesmultimedia 1 year ago
There are quite a few variables that were not included in this comparison which (as with so many similar comparisons) practically moots out the results: AVCHD? Bitrate? Resolution? (Notably, the Panasonic maxes out at 720p, while YouTube has the capability to stream at the Sony's native 1080p. Why did you title your reviews with [1080p]?) EV? These needed to be broken down on each respective camera for the actual footage you shot, and without a perfect match, the results here are useless.
hpaulmoon 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon Yep. My initial testing was to compare the actual optical performance of each, and to demonstrate the insane light streaks. As my project developed, the issues of original capture rates, rendering process, final render formats began to take hold. I suppose, since Sony stepped up the rez to 1440x1080, that made me render to that rez. My ref to 1080P is accurate, and is incidated in the pre-text of vids.
mikesmultimedia 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon I would also add, I do intend to upload each of the clips as stand alone clips, and to render them to their native formats 1280x720 (pana) and 1440x1080 (sony). Again, 1080 P could mean either 1920/1440x1080P. Bit rates were at 14Mbps in rendering. Again, the video you see in youtube is 1440x1080P.
mikesmultimedia 1 year ago
@mikesmultimedia I really don't see what the point is of purporting to "compare" the relative strengths of each camera when you are throttling down the capability of the Sony toward the objective (stubborn?) of making the Panasonic seem superior. As you note (but as the video fails to note), the Panasonic maxes out at 1280x720 resolution. And in comparison to the handicap you imposed on the Sony, it shoots at 1080i/60 (which is 1080p/30) with a resolution of 1920x1080 at 17 Mbps.
hpaulmoon 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon @hpaulmoon You can't really be this obtuse. Downsampling didn't make the Sony video darker nor did it cause the water in the fountain to blur. It didn't turn the blacks to gray or obliterate all low-light detail. Likewise, he didn't cause the Panasonic to experience blooming or make entire buildings disappear in the highlights.
k9education 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon This wasn't a pixel-peeping "which is better under a microscope" comparison and rendering each at their native resolution would have contributed absolutely nothing to the comparison, nor would it even have been possible to do a side-by-side within a single video.
k9education 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon p.s. I don't believe he made either cam seem "superior." He made a clear point to denote the blooming issue with the Panasonic and he stated on a camera forum that he actually chose to keep the Sony. Therefore, your implication that he is less than credible is completely unfounded.
k9education 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon You'll have to email me off line to continue commenting on this forum. You have some good point, but reduce your remarks against other visitors. I'll concur with k9education remarks below. By the way, I personally would not shoot the Sony @ 1920x bc its just not useful in my projects or for home video. The end presentation will not be burned to HD disc, so I personally will keep it down to 1440x. Also streaming 1920 on a home network demands too much bandwidth as well.
mikesmultimedia 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon For the Side by Side video comparisons, I chose to record Sony at 1440x1080, closer to Panasonics max of 1280x720. In this case, Sony has already been given the advantage during the original recording session(s). In any case, as was planned, each of the clips are being made available in their stand alone formats respectively. See their solo videos as they are rendered.
mikesmultimedia 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon Lastly, outside of "resolution" issues, what again is most pronounced at any resolution is the Sony's Lack of low light performance, and the Panasonic's issues of light streaking. These traits will show on the original, and any subsequent renders. Also, as indicated in my descriptions, the 1st few parts were at AVCHD, where the last two were using the alternative rec formats.

BiloDiscoda 1 year ago
@BiloDiscoda I'm waiting for the Panasonic to come out with at least HD @ 1440x1080. CCD vs. CMOS is the answer for the light streaks, but not sure if Pana will address that as Sony has. I've also noticed the streaking in Movies, but its horizontal? Watch Star Trek 2009.

kirmizigulm 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon Oh, by the way, it sounds like you know what your doing. Perhaps you can prepare your own Side by Side testing on a couple of cameras, and instill those standards of which you believe are pertinent. This project has been very extensive, and time consuming, for what little is actually being shown. Workflow and time constraints are in high demand.
mikesmultimedia 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon Considering that Sony's AVCHD is 1080i and NOT 1080p, it seems you are not even aware of the basics. If the results here are "useless" then you're even more ignorant than your initial post implies. The comparison clearly shows the strengths and weaknesses of each cam which is all it was intended to do.
k9education 1 year ago
@k9education After a K-9 education, you'd find that Sony's implementation of HD capture, across its full product line, is not only full 1080p but more versatile. Using any competent NLE (know what that means?), 1080i/60 interpolates to the exact, precise, identically same stream as 1080p/30. Yet if you need to want to adjust playback speed to take advantage of a higher frame rate, you have 60 fields per second to work with.
Who's ignorant now?
hpaulmoon 1 year ago
@hpaulmoon If you believe that 60i is equal to 30p, then the answer would still be: you. The data captured is *not* the same Gunga Din. 30p typically offers better resolution and sharpness while 60i is generally better with motion. technical aspects aside, common sense should tell you that if they were "identical" then different results would not ensue.

t8ls 1 year ago
@t8ls Not sure if you were talking audio vs video regarding teh stereo effect. The side by side videos actually play both audio streams at the same time from both cameras. I left it in, because it wasn't too bad, to provide authenticity, and to assist me with timing the playback of each side by side. In the standalone Solo version I've posted, the audio is as recorded by each camera.

@mikesmultimedia just the stereoscopy like in the IMAX. In some Scenes you adjusted the cams perfectly for this effect. Overall the Panasonic shows a bit more detail and the color are more vibrant. However, in typical Panasonic fashion, the skin tones rendered are inaccurate. You have that usual zombie. Still, I would certainly choose the Panasonic based on this comparison. Thanks for sharing it.
