Certainly one of my favorite films and soundtrack of all my life. I didn't completely agree with Maude taking her own life, because she wanted to be in control of her own death. If I was that lovely and healthy and feisty at 82, death would be the furthest thing from my mind. But, I can see her reasoning..go out while she's still strong, and her mind is clear. I wouldn't want to go to a hospital, though, and die there. I'd go to the mountains in the Spring.
@grannynara I've never been able to agree with her reasoning though because people are still vital and happily active at 90 and even at 100, true they may be slowed down a bit, but even at 79 or 80 you're slowed down from when you were 40 or 20, and with every new day comes the potential for another wonderful experience. I'd hope to live to be 120, and I have a feeling by the time I reach that age they'll figure out how to do it healthily.
Cat Stevens was a truth seeker, and he spread the truth he found through his inspired music and lyrics. We should all be at least as devoted as he was to seeking the truth of life. What could be more important? If you are a truth seeker, search for "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says. Help this spread to other truth seekers.
I am 21 and yet i love the story of these two. Man i wish they would do more storylines similar to Harold & Maude in todays times instead of using overly complicated and trivial storylines in some of these other moves.
I didn't see anything about this movie that amazed me... but then I'm an anarchist and against ageism in dating anyhow. If something amazed you about this movie, you were probably a prude or had a warped conservative upbringing. Now you want to watch a movie that really fucks with your brain when it comes to sexuality, love, relationships, and procreation, watch Erasurehead.
The first time I saw this movie, I sat there slack-jawed....totally stunned! You have to admit it was freakin' weird. After repeated viewings, I grew to appreciate the meaning being conveyed. One of the best movie soundtracks in my opinion! OK...I'm ready for a grillin'....my favorite movie soundtrack is from the movie CARS. What? I have kids!!!

I don't think you get it...BE YOURSELF, who ever you are. Skinny or bulked up...just don't try to be like everyone else. You will be a happier person, for sure! :)
You know, I recently bought the DVD and had forgotten how much this film influenced me. I actually look quite like Harold in real life: dark hair, same face etc. and I identified myself with him (and still do), does that make sense? I had forgotten about his converted E-Type... I really loved it and still do. For me, this film is all about feeling good about yourself and carrying on with life regardless of what it throws at you. I'm happy to have lived at a time when I could see this movie! :)
Well, I don't know why you thought he was English. The character "Harold" and the actor who played him "Bud Cort" are American. Not that that makes any difference, but you're entitled to your opinion, which I don't mind. What's wrong with being a skinny wimp anyway?

This movie is my all-time favorite! Some people seem to "get it" and some people don't. I saw this movie when I was in the Navy in my early twenties. I am now almost sixty and this movie still speaks to me in a special, wonderful way.
My sister watched this at least once a week from the time she was like 14. Loved it. Wore out her vhs tape - I got it for her on DVD, I watch it when I need to feel her near me. it's a very special little movie.
So can I. I love this film. seen it over 50 times. I can never get bored with it. Love the film locations. I used to live in San Francisco area and many of the scenes are located in the Bay area.
I saw it first time 32 years ago, and I was only a boy, but now that i 'm whath you say a man i like it more and more ...this is one of the most beautiful life sing in a movie..
I did a tap dance to this song... Part soft shoe, and the other my own thing... I felt so happy during it, and The lyrics ring so true..Just listen... REMEMBER LIFE IS GOOD, JUST HANG IN THERE!
Here's a great maude quote: "I once broke into a pet store to liberte the canaries, but I decided that was an idea way before it's time." She cracks me up...gotta love her.
I like the bit where Harold tells her he loves her and she replies (after revealing she will die in a few hours) "That's wonderful, now go out and love some more!"
I fell in love with this movie when I first saw(yeah, back in the '70's) I always knew that some day I was going to be Maude (except for the sex with young boys thing, still dig my bikers lol) well, I'm almost there . . . .learned so much from this movie. thanks for posting this!
"Harold and Maude" is the touching and beautiful story of how a young man went searching for his moments in life and gloriously found them with a woman nearly four times his age. It is a timeless, sensitive tale of how love-- no matter what the differences between people are-- creates its own scenarios that transcend all objective and subjective forces. "Harold and Maude" is a challenging and provocative film and its message -- nearly forty years after its premier-- still haunts us today.
I am just like Maude....hahahahahahah!!!!

Here's a great maude quote: "I once broke into a pet store to liberte the canaries, but I decided that was an idea way before it's time." She cracks me up...gotta love her.

I like the bit where Harold tells her he loves her and she replies (after revealing she will die in a few hours) "That's wonderful, now go out and love some more!"
