Great review mate, I agreed completely with every thing your saying and esspecially the the abduction scene! My only discrepency with that is that he run her down in a feild to punch her once which seemed a bit strange in my opinion.
But Andreas such a fantastic writter its un true! And it wasnt until I searched imdb that I realized where I had seen her previous work which is a short film called wasp, which I recommend watching as its even more compelling narrative than 'Fish Tank'
Also I would like to point out the fact that WASP was a driving factor in my very first feature length film 'Intimidated and out numbered' as its raw edgy style inspired me to write with the same sense of social realism that I love to include in all my films up to this point.
So Andrea has been very influencial on my filmmaking career regardless of not being aware that she also made the short film. Either way WASP is a fantastic piece of social commentary well worth watching if you enjoy this.
I tried to write up a review of this film a few minutes back and after seeing your review, i'm just gonna post your review to people who want to know more a bout how good this film is. Great review and good job in not giving too much away. Very well done.
Like your reviews. They're detailed without giving too much away. It's nice hearing a review that's not smug and kinda derisive-like most critics on T.V.
She doesn't seem rebelious at all to be honest, it's the people surrounding her which is the problem. Her mom couldn't care less, she has no friends, no one to talk to.
I agree with your review, with this one I would've also added the influence of neorealism on the Fish Tank, especially given it's strong history in the UK-just my 2 cents.
you're a good critic...though the movie was not as predictable to me, but i agree with every other point. Katie Jarvis really got to me...especially when the horse had to be put down. Keep up the good work.
@Jupiter3xify haha, I think I was talkin about the sex scene but yeah I think there's a bunch of those types scenes that would seem strange if not watching the whole movie lol. thanks for commenting!
I loved Fish Tank and it's my favourite film of last year. Thanks for the recommendation of Leaving Barstow, I'll definitely check it out. If you're looking for some more Fish Tank-esque films try My Summer of Love with Natalie Press that came out in around 2005 or so - another really good film.
I like your review of the film. I saw Fish Tank for the first time last week as I was on holiday in the USA when it was released in the UK. It was briefly shown in some cinemas again thanks to a 'BAFTA winners season: & I liked it enough to see it 3 times over a matter of days. I agree with what you say: great acting from newcomers & little known actors. I will look our for Leaving Barstow. Have you seen 'Red Road' which is one of Andrea Arnold's earlier works? I liked that but prefer Fish Tank.
@callytimecat Thank you! I actually had to pick up the UK dvd, but it just came out in limited theaters here so I'm planning on checking it out again! You'll have to let me know what you think of LB when you check it out. Have not seen any of Arnold's other works but on the DVD her short film WASP is included so looking forward to watching that. Thanks again so much for commenting!
Hy Nic, thanks for the good review - sounds like a film I could get into. I love films that make you think about it days after you watched it - reminds me of the book, The Everafter, not for this storyline in the film but the fact that I read it and finished it and I was still thinking about the book a week later. And Gratz on the spot on the new channel. =)
you're very welcome and thanks as always for the awesome comments! I think you'll really enjoy this one. I've actually ordered the dvd from the uk since its not even out here yet.
its not out there yet? That's strange - usually the states have them first before the UK. I can't wait to get it, I will see if I can get it this weekend if not I will get it online as well. =)
I usually dont watch movies like this, but I really like your review of it. Softspoken and very informative. It actually made me want to keep my eyes open for this one.
The director was FEARLESS in not using those overdone tracking shots and careful lighting inside cars.
