Right now (24 Aug 2010) I have a 1985 XJS TWR for sale on ebay. Heck of a deal for a rare supercar with Walkinshaw engine, suspension and chassis modifications. Item 300458549629.
@1337ASM Then why does it have a V-12 and can be modded like one? Just because it is british, dosen't mean that it is a GT car!!! Plus most people are starting to add nissans and crappy infinities as muscle cares and think they are really that, when they are rice crap, look at drag strip vids of this car and then see!!!
@harris3693 It has a V12 engine, because the idea behind jaguars is so that they are smooth, and more cylinders = smoother torque and power output
Jaguars have always been making cars that are (a) comfortable and (b) fast..
btw, the jaguar xjs was always classes as a grand tourer, and still are..
you can mod ANY car to be fast.. so i don't understand your point, and unfortunately you wont get alot of power from the V12 because it only has 2valves per cylinder..
2 valves per cylinder doesn't matter a damn. When they used the V12to win Le Mans in the late 1980's it was putting out 750hp. Still normally aspirated, still 2 valves per cylinder. It's area that counts... not number.
@biggles19821 I agree with you on that one. It is more muscle than a supped up challenger of the same year, so why do people don't consider Jaguars muscle cars when even today they make more HP in the base models than a ford mustang, camaro or challenger of this year? LIKE 300 HP for a used Jag which is a couple years old costs as much as a base ford mustang and can be supped up to be around 700 hp if Arden Performance parts were used!!!!!!
@1337ASM Then why do you consider a classic dodge challenger a muscle car when it has less hp than a TWR Jag? It too can be considered a gt car!!! Like seriously, what is the main difference between a muscle car and a GT car, a Ford mustang can be considered both a muscle and GT but not a Jaguar?!!! Look at today's jaguar such as the 2000 Jag XJ, has over 300HP STOCK and looks like a TRUE CLASSIC MUSCLE CAR!!! whereas the ford mustang and camaro of the same year are below the 250 line!!
@harris3693 I've spoken to a lot of muscle car clubs of the Internet, and the majourity of people agree that a muscle car has to have a big block V8. In addition to that, a muscle car has to be low-mid priced, 2 doored and can not be luxurious. All jags fail of the last three points, but they do have V8s, but NOT the XJS.
Jaguars (especially) back then were UPPER class, nearly no middle class person had one, and definitely no (honest) working class person could have one.
@1337ASM I can say the same about the new Challenger and GT500, THEY ARE UBER LUXURIOUS With navigation, leather and a limited production run of 500 vehicles per year and range at the same price as LUXURY cars. The reason people consider it a GT car is because they can't afford it Plus you can get a 2004 jag S-type R for the price of a 2 year old ford mustang base!!!BTW, there were many muscle cars with V-12's but you guys were too lazy to develope the engine. Also, if the challenger (con't)..
@harris3693 To lazy to build a V12? the reason it was bumped is becausethe power/weight ratio from a V6 is better then a V12, and it was more economical and ecological (see xj220).. Second hand prices don't count, because you can by a ferrari for less then £5,000 does that make it a reasonably priced car (Which it isn't)? SatNav you get on cheap £8k polos or w/e, that's not lux... The main IDEA of a muscle car is that it's for the MASSES not the elites...
@1337ASM Yeah, just find a shelby GT500 or Challenger SRT8 in the masses in Britian and come back to me. Also If you talk about economics, then why do you see people sooping up jags which are couple of years old?!!! If people can't afford them, then why do you see alot of them on the road?
@harris3693 There aren't alot of jags on the road.. the real TCO of a jaguar is huge.. We've owned a jag for ages, and if you buy the parts new, then it costs a arm and a leg.. I can tell you, Jaguars have high TCO cost, so most people that buy them, sell them cause of it..
@1337ASM agreed, but you have to consider the initial cost of buying a new american muscle car over a used jag. Say if you were to buy both cars and then modify in terms of performance, it would cost you a minimum of $4000 to get a supercharger, an extra $2000 on a cooling system, an extra $1000 for a extremly rigid suspension system and then modify the engine just to hold on all the extra internal combustion pressure (Another$1000). (continued)...
@1337ASM For the base Jag, It would cost you only the supercharger which is $4000 as the jag has been engineered for le mans like races, which would kill most muscle cars. Also you must consider that most companies that make so called muscle cars do it for profit such as limiting the engine by modifing the engine so no ultra performance parts can be added or lock the ECU so no one can hack and then resort to buying a seperate carburate from their performance division just so that way they (con't
@1337ASM so that way they can make their dream muscle car which added woul cost as much as a brand new Jaguar XJR with slight mods to the engine and miscallenaous components.
@harris3693 To us europeans, Manuals (or ATM) is the only gearbox for sports cars, to us, Autos are for luxury cars... You also have to look at branding, to us (europeans), "Muscle cars" dont sound lux, and bring connotations of people that are yobs or people who arent that accomplished in life.. GT on the other had, denotes a car that is designed to fast when you want it, but at the same time very smooth.. Although Muscle cars and GTs might not seem to apart.. cont
@harris3693 The market audience for a GT car and a muscle car are totally different. In addition to that, for insurance companies, the type of car is important, a GT car will cost less to insure then a muscle car, because muscle cars are perceived to be speed orientated, (and cheap(er) so the average age of a driver of a muscle car will usually be lower).
@1337ASM If the dodge challenger SRT-8 and Ford Shelby GT500KR were soo affordable, then why in the world do you find more Jags on the road than those two uber so called "muscle cars" for that price , I can buy a used Mercedes gull wing which has a Big block V8 and soop it up which can murder those in a drag race!!
@1337ASM And seriously, do you really want to bust your ass in a drag race you can't win in a V8 powered vehicle, like biggles19821 said who gives a fuck about valves when the area of the pistons is enough to out torque you in a race which is normally aspirated compared to the new so called muscle cars which must have a supercharger just to catch up!! You might have to redefine what a muscle car is!!!
@harris3693 WOW!!!.. you know your motoring.. if you knew your stuff, you would know it's how the air moves in the cylinder that defines the power.. NOT THE SIZE.. that's why F1 cars get over 800hp from a 2.4ltr engine.. If your SOOOO smart, i wouldnt haven't to tell you that depending on your emissions, you can or can not sell a car... and since you know everything, you would know cars have become heavier over the past years...
@1337ASM Actually, you are right on on the first two parts but remember, Safety first before performance, that is what most manufacturers look at. In the 1960's bigger was better but due to the arab oil crisis, many manufacturers started to cut weight off their vehicles to keep up to emissions standards. BTW, the new mustang is at least 3 times liter than when it first came out as they developed a new type of safety features such as crumple zones which are made of kevlar or in most cases plastic
@harris3693 your right about superchargers, since forced induction is WAY more efficient then natural asp.. it's ludicrous to put a supercharger/turbo on!..
why would i want to get more power / weight and power / size.. and who cares about fuel econ
@harris3693 the term "ricer" refers to when a car is basically cosmetically modified, as in parts that dont help performance.some refer ricers as "all for show, but no go". on some cars, it is different. you tend to only see japanese ricers because aftermarket bodykits are more available to those cars. just because a car is a nissan or an infinity, it doesnt mean it is a ricer.
Old footage??? Soprano313 do you think 2007 is really that old? Also for those who find this shocking - A Jag race car - I suggest you look up how long Jags have been racing, especially the XJS. If you have never driven one of these V12 cars you have NO idea.
@redjupiter2 noob its OLD footage just because it was UPLOADED in 07 doesnt mean its newwer footage.. LOOK AT IT ITS OLD! lolololool sweet sound jag tho
@firelizard007 the word 'Noob' doesn't mean anything, its not part of the english language or even a swear word so do yourself a favour and refrain from using it because you will make yourself look like a FUCKWIT if you do!
Nothing like a proper stick gearshift and foot clutch to truly challenge a driver ,I think sports cars(and cars in general) today have lost a bit of their flavour with these Semi auto Paddle- shifters
@spiktan funny thing is that the road going XJS with the exception of the 4.0 I6 did not have a manual gearbox. There is a very robust Tremec TKO600 gearbox though sold by a website called the driven man dot com (no spaces) and it would be great to swap one in to a later XJS. Give it the limited slip diff, and a manual, and it's every bit as good as it's successor, and I'll be condemned if I say this, every bit as good as the Aston Martin DB7.
@TechThem22 some of the 6.0s had manual gearboxes and the 3.6 also. I know where I can get my hands on an original manual '77 XJ-S, there were only ever 354 built and at least 2 of them are still on the road.
There is a tonne of conversions, I've seen a toyota gearbox conversion from a pickup.
Come on guys you probably drive a Nissan!!!! This engine was designed in the 60s it is made completely of alloy Inc sump (for you anoraks!!! Except, crank, con rods, valve springs, valves, buckets shims, camshaft, timing chain, sprockets, pulleys flywheel Bering shells ect.) in the 60s BMW only dreamed of V12s and Ferrari laughed at the Jaguar V12 but it sure made up for it in CCs !!! Work it out for your selves if you can.....lol
In hsi book on the 1985 Bathurst 1000, Bill Tuckey described the Jag's exhaust note as like "ripping corrugated iron" - and that was meant to be complimentary.
The commentator called Tom Walkinshaw English - he wouldn't be pleased - he's Scottish!!! Before using the XJS he raced the Rover SD1 in BTC and beat all the Germans. TWR went on buy a stake in Volvo and was responsible for things like the T5 - ditching volvo's geriatric image!!!
In what times? Originally there was no Britain as such - just a collection of tribes. The Romans arrived and named it Britain - after the dark ages the country was split into Wales - Scotland - Ireland and England. I am NOT and never have been English!!!
Years ago, people from teh commonwealth could have been called english, whether they were from ireland, wales, scottish, india..etc in thoose times english did necessarily mean they are from/live in england itself, and it wasnt/isnt derogatory to call someone that is from the commonwealth english..
by the sounds of it ur english and ur complaining that ur english
Listen to that big cat purr! Great sound too. Really takes a lot of courage to pilot a V12-powered beast around Bathurst. Not to mention doing it in such a big car.
Awesome car and an awesome man. Walkinshaw was the person who made Volvos interesting - his team developed the Volvo T5s and other hot cars which killed their fuddy duddy image. Before he raced the XJS he used Rover SD1s to great effect in BTC.
About 272 KPH I think if I remember right but they did over 290 KPH at other tracks previously. This was the swansong of the TWR jags apart from one race in New Zealand I think.
Hi Richard, both the wheels and the tyres were purpose built for the car ( 19 inch ) and as such aren't anavailable item. Best alternative is probably a BBS
There are Jaguar factory replica wheels as part of the TWR Special Edition package for 1989 or 1990 XJS. Hard to find, but there are some around. I bought a wrecked TWR for the engine and tranny, but the wheels were bent and too mangled to be salvaged
I completely agree with you. I was just letting Richardllisxyz know that he can get the replica version of them that are OE from Jaguar, as opposed to aftermarket BBS. It just depends how authentic he wants to make his car, and budget will have a lot to do with it. As for the jag replica rims, I believe they were 17 inch diamteter.
Hi, yes you're right, I was mixing up my jag race wheels ! the broadspeed Jaguar XJCs were the ones that used the 19 inchers. I actually have a set of the 17" centrelock BBS wheels new with hubs and all but they're a bit far away for him !
and these TWR ones looked magic in British racing green.I saw a replica that John Goss made of his 85 race winner and looked just as good as the Tom's one does in this video.Old Tom was a pretty good driver back in the day.
you're too right there mate, but by the looks of it, he wasn't really a conservative driver towards his machinery. especially in the 1988 race, when tom jumped into larrys car and fukin over-revved the thing going up pit straight every lap he was drivin it, so yeah.
I'm pretty sure that a E type never raced in what would have been one of the old 500 mile endurance races but they are definately a great looking car.
one thing im amazed about, is how those guys were able to slow those cars down, becaus these days, they have the chase. when you brake, it's easier to slow down, because there's a little uphill rise as you get further into the chase. but when it was in it's original shape, there's a downhill drop just before you hit the brake, so it would have been harder to pull it up, i imagine.
I have a 1990 xjs v12, and I would not trade it for even a new Rolls.......I leave everyone in the dust....and look good doing it too.....besides being a single woman...it is a no-brainer.
I have a 5.3L XJ-S and a 4.0L XJ40 and consider that there is little on the road that really compete on a looks and performance, by year of production, basis.
When you say "one of worst cars ever made"...it depends who you are listening to....the program Top Gear were very impressed with the xj220.....its on You Tube...depends on taste and what you want to do with a car...probably useless on normal roads etc ...like all these "super cars'..they are built for acceleration and top end speed, although the Jaguar rates much better than most for comfort, interier, build quality. I own a 1986 xj6 soveriegn and these are exellent.
@SeeSeeRider77 I stand corrected, getting a little ahead of myself. 1985 TWR takes over from Group 44, campaigns the XJR6 6.0L V12. 1986, 6.9L, 1988 XJR9, 7.0L, ...1991 7.4L @ 750 BHP.

@1337ASM If the dodge challenger SRT-8 and Ford Shelby GT500KR were soo affordable, then why in the world do you find more Jags on the road than those two uber so called "muscle cars" for that price , I can buy a used Mercedes gull wing which has a Big block V8 and soop it up which can murder those in a drag race!!
harris3693 1 year ago
@1337ASM And seriously, do you really want to bust your ass in a drag race you can't win in a V8 powered vehicle, like biggles19821 said who gives a fuck about valves when the area of the pistons is enough to out torque you in a race which is normally aspirated compared to the new so called muscle cars which must have a supercharger just to catch up!! You might have to redefine what a muscle car is!!!
harris3693 1 year ago
@harris3693 WOW!!!.. you know your motoring.. if you knew your stuff, you would know it's how the air moves in the cylinder that defines the power.. NOT THE SIZE.. that's why F1 cars get over 800hp from a 2.4ltr engine.. If your SOOOO smart, i wouldnt haven't to tell you that depending on your emissions, you can or can not sell a car... and since you know everything, you would know cars have become heavier over the past years...
1337ASM 1 year ago
@1337ASM Actually, you are right on on the first two parts but remember, Safety first before performance, that is what most manufacturers look at. In the 1960's bigger was better but due to the arab oil crisis, many manufacturers started to cut weight off their vehicles to keep up to emissions standards. BTW, the new mustang is at least 3 times liter than when it first came out as they developed a new type of safety features such as crumple zones which are made of kevlar or in most cases plastic
harris3693 1 year ago
@harris3693 your right about superchargers, since forced induction is WAY more efficient then natural asp.. it's ludicrous to put a supercharger/turbo on!..
why would i want to get more power / weight and power / size.. and who cares about fuel econ
1337ASM 1 year ago

Nothing like a proper stick gearshift and foot clutch to truly challenge a driver ,I think sports cars(and cars in general) today have lost a bit of their flavour with these Semi auto Paddle- shifters
spiktan 2 years ago 37
half of them would not be able to drive stick shift!!!

@spiktan absolutely true
aluminium4ever 1 year ago
@spiktan And not to mention full on control systems. Now days with sports cars you barely drive the thing if you lose control.
musclekid13 1 year ago
@spiktan funny thing is that the road going XJS with the exception of the 4.0 I6 did not have a manual gearbox. There is a very robust Tremec TKO600 gearbox though sold by a website called the driven man dot com (no spaces) and it would be great to swap one in to a later XJS. Give it the limited slip diff, and a manual, and it's every bit as good as it's successor, and I'll be condemned if I say this, every bit as good as the Aston Martin DB7.
TechThem22 9 months ago

Learn some history please!!!
codprawn 2 years ago
Years ago, people from teh commonwealth could have been called english, whether they were from ireland, wales, scottish, india..etc in thoose times english did necessarily mean they are from/live in england itself, and it wasnt/isnt derogatory to call someone that is from the commonwealth english..
by the sounds of it ur english and ur complaining that ur english
Lean some history please!!!

What make are those wheels..anyone know??
I'm putting together a 'replica'
Note the turn where he lifted the inside wheels was an off camber turn...off camber turns really reek havoc at racetracks.
RichardEllisxyz 3 years ago
Hi Richard, both the wheels and the tyres were purpose built for the car ( 19 inch ) and as such aren't anavailable item. Best alternative is probably a BBS
gcmc2 3 years ago
There are Jaguar factory replica wheels as part of the TWR Special Edition package for 1989 or 1990 XJS. Hard to find, but there are some around. I bought a wrecked TWR for the engine and tranny, but the wheels were bent and too mangled to be salvaged
mecheng1 3 years ago
Hi, yes, but these are huge 19 inch race wheels specially made for the TWR racing cars. Even the tyres were a special dunlop tyre for the cars.
gcmc2 3 years ago
I completely agree with you. I was just letting Richardllisxyz know that he can get the replica version of them that are OE from Jaguar, as opposed to aftermarket BBS. It just depends how authentic he wants to make his car, and budget will have a lot to do with it. As for the jag replica rims, I believe they were 17 inch diamteter.
mecheng1 3 years ago
Hi, yes you're right, I was mixing up my jag race wheels ! the broadspeed Jaguar XJCs were the ones that used the 19 inchers. I actually have a set of the 17" centrelock BBS wheels new with hubs and all but they're a bit far away for him !
gcmc2 3 years ago
Just goes to show TW new his stuff was there ever a better soundtrack!

The XJS Jags were beautiful looking machines
and these TWR ones looked magic in British racing green.I saw a replica that John Goss made of his 85 race winner and looked just as good as the Tom's one does in this video.Old Tom was a pretty good driver back in the day.
fordbrock8 4 years ago
you're too right there mate, but by the looks of it, he wasn't really a conservative driver towards his machinery. especially in the 1988 race, when tom jumped into larrys car and fukin over-revved the thing going up pit straight every lap he was drivin it, so yeah.
jam3z07 3 years ago
that is some badass driving.

did the jaguar e-type ever race here at bathurst??

no it didnt
67675656565655656565 3 years ago
one thing im amazed about, is how those guys were able to slow those cars down, becaus these days, they have the chase. when you brake, it's easier to slow down, because there's a little uphill rise as you get further into the chase. but when it was in it's original shape, there's a downhill drop just before you hit the brake, so it would have been harder to pull it up, i imagine.
jam3z07 4 years ago
I have a 1987 xjs-c twr 6 liter and have other classics but always use the twr as very few cars can give the feel good factor like the xjs
gc40 4 years ago
I have a 1990 xjs v12, and I would not trade it for even a new Rolls.......I leave everyone in the dust....and look good doing it too.....besides being a single woman...it is a no-brainer.
chemistkat555 4 years ago
would you trade it for the TWR racing jaguar XJS that's in this video?
jam3z07 4 years ago
no....mine is better
chemistkat555 4 years ago
I have a 5.3L XJ-S and a 4.0L XJ40 and consider that there is little on the road that really compete on a looks and performance, by year of production, basis.

"the worst car ever made" are you shitting me?
ihatenissanskylines 4 years ago
that race car > production cars
slimeball6969 4 years ago
When you say "one of worst cars ever made"...it depends who you are listening to....the program Top Gear were very impressed with the xj220.....its on You Tube...depends on taste and what you want to do with a car...probably useless on normal roads etc ...like all these "super cars'..they are built for acceleration and top end speed, although the Jaguar rates much better than most for comfort, interier, build quality. I own a 1986 xj6 soveriegn and these are exellent.
