McCollum's sick slide work and Curly's thundering bass is unbelieveable to say the least. Nice work Whigsbitch! I owe you and Bomber66 for an unbelieveable foray down Whigs memory lane. I am grateful as hell to you both. Thank you....
What do people think of new Dulli stuff with Mark Lanegan Gutter Twins, etc? I can't find a place to get into it yet. The AW were just so fucking great how do you follow that? Seriously the most underrated rock band of all time. There is just nobody like them (except for imitators who came after them). Dulli's lyrics should be collected into book form and taught as a class...
You're right but you're wrong. Listen to Dulli and Co. wax poetic on countless covers, like Creep, True Love Travels Down A Gravel Road, and Lost In A Supermarket. The Whigs were inimitable as a group, but they're reinvention of other music was life affirming.
Dulli is one of the greatest singer songwriters of our time/all time. some albums/projects i enjoy more than others, but none the less........ALL HAIL DULLI !!!!!!!!!
Dude, I totally agree with you, but you have to realize that he can't go there anymore. Like any great artist, Greg has evolved and produced music that has grown and changed along with him. Listen to the Twilight Singers albums and see where he is now, and listen to the Gutter Twins and see how he interacts with Lanegan sharing the helm. I was initially disappointed with the GT record, but the more I listen to it the more I am blown away by it. Give it a chance and see what I mean...
Personally, I love the Gutter Twins. I don't really compare them to the Whigs or Twilight Singers because they're doing their own thing, a different sound. Idle Hands, and All Miser/Flowers... Amazing.
Been a fan for 13 years... at about 2:00 am one summer night on 120 minutes saw Going to Town... other than bootlegs... seriously own their entire catalog. Unless there is more unreleased stuff out there. Oh yeah, I was a kid at the time. Easily most underated band of the nineties.

Ha! poor bastard. I saw them 3 times; 94 and 95 in small-ish bars and in 98 at the Newport, all in Columbus, where I used to live. At the 98 show, Marcy Mays (Scrawl) came out and sang My Curse. Holy shit, the crowd went absolutely nuts. Great show.
I remember reading a review of it shortly after it came out in Alternative Press (Cleveland); basically said it was the worst collection of songs Whigs could have put together. I was stunned...felt like the reviewer had apparently heard a completely different recording than I had.
Yeah, Black Love was a critical and commercial failure by all accounts. So odd, it is a logical progression after Gentleman. I think those few years between 93-96 were pretty crucial for the media turning their back on anything that once bore the "alternative" tag. Though, the Whigs were always in their own world. I'll take BL as my favorite Whigs record.
Speaking of Black Love, you may or may not know the song of that title is featured at the end of a Dennis Leary movie called Monument Ave. The Whigs appear briefly in the movie, too. Movie sucked balls, but as a fan you might check it out if you haven't already.
Yeah, I love that version. He re-did it all funky with Twilight Singers but that version in Monument Ave. is great. I didn't think the movie was that bad.
Yeah, the version on the first TS cd isn't as good, imo. When the creds came up at the end of that movie, I just sat there staring at the screen. What a great fucking song.

Too true. It's almost to painful to watch this stuff. I saw the Gutter Twins a couple days ago and they were good but they were not the Whigs.

I really regret that I wasn't quite old enough to "get" the Whigs when they were around. Now I'd give a kidney to have seen them live.

The feeling is mutual. I just discovered them last year, what a legacy and amazing band.
