Watermelon a great source of vitamin C and potassium. Grows easiliy in poor soil, the vines buds at leasts three times during the growing season. Economically speaking, for people with little or no money this crop was very profitable ,not to mention a thirst quencher on hot summer days. If you are a slave working under hot conditions this is the crop to eat (it has lots of water right?) sweet and full of energy. It is not hard to understand why blacks at that time liked watermelon so much.

KIDS played with each other even back then in the Deep South. They only got notions of racism when they got older. And the notion of racism has only gotten worse thru political correctness now that civil rights has taken effect.
Is it racist? More stereotyping than consciously racist, IMHO. But consider the context of the era in which these films were made. Keep in mind that during this period of history, the Klan was a very powerful force in much of America and Jim Crow was in full effect. Long before the Civil Rights Movement gathered steam, The Little Rascals depicted black and white kids mixing as friends on a daily basis in a very "normal" way.

And speaking of The Cosby Show, during that programs run, Cosby gave an interview where he said that he would not allow any episodes that portrayed the children dating out of their race. It is probably better to show them these things so that they are not forgotten, but you definitely need to explain it and frame it in a way so that kids can understand it as a product of a certain time that held certain values that might be held up to moral scrutiny. I am not yet 50 years old and as I was growing up in the late 60's early 70's a lot of my white friends watched this show. It influenced the way they treated me as one of only a few black kids in my school. I used to hear these jokes and kids used to ask me why I didn't style my hair like the black kids on this show. Yes, these shows are 80 years old but they were racist when they were written and they do still have an impact today.

Watermelon a great source of vitamin C and potassium. Grows easiliy in poor soil, the vines buds at leasts three times during the growing season. Economically speaking, for people with little or no money this crop was very profitable ,not to mention a thirst quencher on hot summer days. If you are a slave working under hot conditions this is the crop to eat (it has lots of water right?) sweet and full of energy. It is not hard to understand why blacks at that time liked watermelon so much.

Keep in mind that during this period of history, the Klan was a very powerful force in much of America and Jim Crow was in full effect. Long before the Civil Rights Movement gathered steam, The Little Rascals depicted black and white kids mixing as friends on a daily basis in a very "normal" way.

I am not yet 50 years old and as I was growing up in the late 60's early 70's a lot of my white friends watched this show. It influenced the way they treated me as one of only a few black kids in my school. I used to hear these jokes and kids used to ask me why I didn't style my hair like the black kids on this show. Yes, these shows are 80 years old but they were racist when they were written and they do still have an impact today.

I can see how people view this as racist but there are far more racist scenes in the little rascals. I think its up to interpretation on this one because i dont really know where i stand.

The implication that all black people like fried chicken and watermelon is not racist - it's annoying! Not giving a black person a job or renting an apartment to them because of skin colour - THAT'S racist. Get a clue! Nothing wrong with fried chicken and watermelon. It's good, clean, delicious food. But your statement equates your discomfort (a subjective quantity) with this snippet of Our Gang being defined as racist (an objective statement of fact). Since every individual will experience different levels of discomfort from different stimuli, the only thing you can speak to with authority is your feelings of discomfort. Saying "I'm Black so my feelings supersede yours" is, in itself racist.

Anyone who's complaining about this show is just looking for something to bitch about. But when the black actors who played Stimey and Buckwheat were grown up, they said in an interview that this show was one of the first to have white kids and black kids treated as equals. And all the kids were steriotypes like the fat kid chubby or the red haired freckle faced kid. So some of these whinners and complainers should just learn to shut the fuck up. This show is a classic.
