The black "paint" is called Ohagorou, today it is a wax. It can also be a sign of marriage. Maiko of Kyoto also use it when going through the last phase of their training before coming full fledged.
I was very excited to see the Oiran/Tayuu. Do they still have ones that practice this art as courtesans or do they just do this to preserve cultural traditions?
With my limited knowledge about tayuu/oiran, I know that they still practice their arts because it's their duty. I think preserving their cultural traditions is just a secondary reason.
From what I know, there are only less than 10 oirans practicing now in Japan (I'm not sure, but I think there are only 8 at present). I hope you would be able to see one in the future. Give me news (^,^)
Tayuu!! They do not practice the sexual aspects (on the record anyway) since it was made illegal in the 1950s. I believe there are only 4 left in Kyoto. It's like looking at living history- so unbelievable. Did she even dye her teeth black? It's hard to tell.
I liked the way you incorporated the scenery from the towns with the images of the geisha and maiko. You even have an oiran (tayuu?) inside. A nice package on the pleasure quarters of Japan and the great divide between the modern and traditional Japan.
but you can see Geiko later in the video.

@sheynoo In old Japan all women painted their teeth black because it was considered sexy. That tradition stayed with the oiran :^)
