Wow Atlanta looks like Wichita. They're remaking this movie. I can't see it being better but if it's based in Atlanta they can have cameos by. Usher, Ludacris. TI, and all the other artists based there.
@billsmokinweed I read about that they want reynolds in it also and i heard they approached Clint Eastwood for a cameo it would bring Reynolds and Eastwood back together since City Heat could be cool if they pull this off
Love this flick as well. But as much as I do love it, it is a complete lift from Preminger's 1944 Laura. And Gene Tierney was drop dead gorgeous as well.
I haven't seen this film in about twenty years, and I had forgotten how long the instrumental intro is, or how different the movie version of 'Street Life' is from the released soundtrack. I hope one day the soundtrack is re-released on digital, along with the many extra cues that never made the vinyl LP.
Love this movie... I was just in Atlanta for the 1st time on vacation. I'm trying to convince the Wife to move there, I would love for our kids to grow up there... Baltimore is getting rough.

Atlanta is just as bad as Baltimore! Both cities are basically ghetto's with populations who like shooting and stabbing each other like it's the national past-time. Try North or South Carolina, lots of great places, especially in the research triangle, and your children will get a first rate education as well!
I saw this movie in the fall of 1981 when it was released. I was either 15 or 16 years old and saw it with my late father and younger sister. Yes, it was a bit rough for younger viewers with the language, blood and all. But as I said, my dad was there with us. I fell in love with this movie upon seeing it and have loved it ever since. It was hard seeing Hari Rhodes playing that drug dealer though in the beginning.
Terrific opening. I saw this movie when it first aired on U.S. television (C.B.S.) in the fall of the 1984. The opening sequence stayed with me for the next thirteen years until I was able to see the unedited version as an adult. Still a great opening. The rest of the movie isn't bad either. In my opinion this is something of a forgotten gem. It needs to be released again on DVD with extras and voice over commentary.
This is a very good and underrated movie. Thanks for posting it. "Sharkey's Machine" sure beats "Cannonball Run 2" and "Smokey & The Bandit 3". "Street Life" is an amazing song. Rachel Ward is gorgeous, but I think Burt Reynolds' toupee received second billing in this movie.
"Sharky" from '81 and "Hustle" from '75 were Burt's greatest films...both of the cops he played were "Dan August" with a twist. It's ridiculous that there's never any mention of these films...how about paying some respect to Burt while he's still alive?? Doing many of his own stunts only added to the greatness of it.
I remember watching the first few minutes of this in 1990 with my parents before my sister said, "ah, forget it" and my mum told us to switch off the telly.
Managed to see it anyway in '98. Classic Burt action flick.
Best ever Burt movie, no doubt. Completely underrated. I was a senior in high school when it came out. Sounds old now, but this made a big impact on me. Great movie making, Almost walked out, just restless, Now watched 25 times, sad to say... or not,. Terrific mystical quality, described excellent by critic on another post.
heat, stick'the man who loved cat dancing, but mr reynolds sharkys machine is on another level in movie makeing.ather all these years it stands by itself.brian keith,mr durning, berney casey. victorio gassman ,henry silva are you kiddng me what a cast.and the music like no other.not to mention domino
Ironically he is director & note the films production company . Deliverance - by the actor / movie . How cool is that . He takes out the bad guys , plays no fool to anyone & wins the heart of the dream girl . All in a days work . ONLY BURT . His style was like Bruce Lees . Uncompromising , sleek & with a sense of humor few can deny . This film was wayyyyyy ahead of its time . I have always loved the intergration of great Jazz the city & his work as a director on this film . Brilliant !
Ironically it's called a Deliverance production , the same film which made him even more of the man he was & he directed it too .WOW ! He was more than a macho - HE WAS THE MAN ! A male character who gave men feeling , strength , honor , humor & above all a REAL sense of all roundedness . Wayyy ahead of it's time . Film didn't make male characters like this & along came Burt to show us how REAL men think about everything in life & those things that remain important . TRUE LOVE ! ........
A crackerjack cop thriller of the highest order! What a sizzling start to the film with Burt's drug bust going awry and then chasing that dealer on the bus. Woah!
The rest of the film is just as good, a cracking crime mystery with fantastic villains, a seedy noir atmosphere and a stunning heroine. They don't make 'em like this anymore!
My favorite cop flick of all time!

Anyone who needs to know how drugs ruin a person just need see how great Burt was here.As both actor and director he could be brilliant and unique.
He was very talented but his addictions ruined him.

These older flicks have a lot more urban grit and character than a lot of the family-friendly sanitized fare that is the norm nowadays.
