  • i loved vanille's japanese voice

  • there is just something so CLICHE about Japanese acting in general. at least it's not as bad as their live action acting. the style is absolutely perfect for over-the-top anime, though.

  • I seconded what @diwwah said, that I am against English version for Vanille (and Serah too), especially Vanille, her voice makes my ears bled =3= Sazh is pretty much the most spot on for the English one, maybe it's because of the race, which there are no equivalence in Japan (I am not racist, just implying), Jihl is great in English too. the rest are OK, though I often feel the Japanese one is more... 'experienced'.

  • I think that Square Enix should put an option into their games that allow you to change the voices from english to japanese and vice versa.

  • I personally liked the english much better then Japanese. Vanilla is the only Japanese voice I like.

Personally I think Hope's english voice actor did a much better job then the Japanese voice- actor.

  • I'm usually against English dubs, but I really liked the English voices in this game. They're pretty amazing and spot-on for the characters' personalities (my favorite is Sazh). Just compare it to mediocre dubs like Star Ocean 4's. At least in Star Ocean you can choose, though.

  • All I have against the English version is Hope and Vanille, and the changes in songs. Sahz is better in English and the rest are fine for both versions. CGI cutscenes aren't lip-sync'd to English voiceovers, though.

I ordered the Chinese version with English text and Japanese voiceovers, myself.

  • Wow, Jihl Nabaat is hot! Her outfit is quite strange, but still.

Most people prefer light's jap voice, but I think Ali Hillis did a great job. I actually prefer her version of lightning.

And btw, I love vanille! There, I said it! At first, I seriously lol:ed every time she opened her mouth, but after about 3 hours of gameplay, I really started to like her. She's a good character.

  • OMG!! Hope's more annoying in Japanese version!!

  • my favorites are the english voices they dont put to much a emotion witch makes it seem more real witch i think final fantasy tries to show true emmotion and try to make it seem like what they would sound like in america and to be honest all the voices are amzing i dont understand why people complain about the actors hard work they all did great

  • I'd like to say the only bad english voice actors were hope and vanille, but the rest in english or japanese is good. But I also say that in some scenes the english actors didnt put much emotion to the mood of the scene which kinda killed it actually

  • does anyone know snow's JP voice actor? i think he sounds familiar as someone from either bleach naruto or FMA.

  • @KazeKage572 he's Ono Daisuke... he's famous as Sebastian (Kuroshitsuji) and Koizumi (Suzumiya Haruhi). He won the Best Male Seiyu in 4th Seiyuu Award as Sebastian XD

  • I like all the english voices. the japanese ones are too anime-ish for me

  • they did pretty good dubbing! =] but i like japanese better =]

  • The only way the Japanese voices could be better to someone is if that person actually understood Japanese. That's just my thought, though.

  • @xedvon i disagree. I don't know dont know japanese but i find the original japanese voices better.

  • it's so strange listening to vanille & fang's japanese voice after getting used to the dub's accent P:

  • japanese were better all the way. english ones didnt have any soul/emotion behind it. i cringe when i see the cutscenes while im playing, its almost embarrassing to watch and hear the poor acting.

  • Lightning is voiced by the same voice actor that voices Lunamaria in the japanese version of gundam seed destiny

  • Although I love Japan and all things Japanese I prefer the English. They, to me, are more realistic

  • I always thought they just timed the dubbing right....

They changed the mouth motion :)

  • sazh just sounds weird in japanese after watching cutscenes in english and hope talks reeeeaaalllly fast in japanese

  • sazh just sounds weird in japanese after watching cutscenes in english

  • @MrsZackFair Well Sazh's Japanese VA also voices Guy from Naruto.

  • hmmm. I like the English dub better.

  • english voices have more emotion

  • For Fang, both are sexy ><

  • Both lightning's voice are good! But i prefer jap, it's more expressive. Eng sound alittle monotone.

For Snow, I prefer eng. He sound younger =D

Vanille, I sounded like both voices come from the same person. But I prefer jap.

    Sazh, English!

Hope- It's hard to decide. Both voices gave out different feelings. Jap ver. sounded hopeless and lost whereas eng sounded shy and wise at the same time. I guess jap is better?Because jap. ver sounded more like a young teenage boy.

    Serah -JAP!

  • so its true they re animated the voice acting in English ver

  • Sazh's japanese voice sounds almost exactly like Loz from Advent Children.

  • all the scene hav the background song?

    prefer japanese because more natural

  • I like Hope's English and Japanese voices! He will always be my favorite character.

  • sazh's japanese voice just doesn't sound like it fits him. but other than that i liked both versions. i'm just used to hearing it in english that they've kind of grown on me.

  • i think lightning's english va was absolutely perfect, snow's too. i think i prefer vanille's japanese though.

  • I love Serah's Japanese voice so much better.

  • SERAHHHH!!! *whisper: steelguard*

  • Vanille~~!! <3 <3 She sounds awesome in both English AND Japanese. The rest sounds awesome in Japanese and surprisingly well in English.

    <3

  • JP > ENG Vanille

    JP > ENG Hope

    JP = ENG Lightning

    JP = ENG Snow

    JP = ENG Serah

    JP = ENG Fang

    Thats my opinion.

  • @cdanime what about the black dude

  • I usually prefer the Japanese versions for games/anime because it seems more natural and fitting, but the English voice actors for Final Fantasy XIII did a FANTASTIC job! Kudos to all of them! Lightning & Fang's voices are my favorite. :)

  • You kind of cut off the end of some of the clips, which is slightly annoying, Anyway, I've learned (from having a multicultural background) that you really have to be FLUENT in a language AND understand the culture to determine just how good the voice acting really is. I'm fluent in two languages and I can tell you that, from an English/American standpoint, another language may *sound* like great acting because you hear emphasis and such, but it may just be forced. (Just speaking in general.)

  • i really liked fang's voice acting in FFXIII, they have a interview for vanille's voice actor, why not interview fang's T_T

  • I noticed they actually remade the lip sync for the english ver.

  • English voice actors have more personality...Japanese all sound the same

  • @DarthRoy1292 That's probably because you know English and not Japanese. You can't tell if they "have personality" if you don't know the language, as different languages express personalities in different ways.

  • @stargateheaven23 i guess so, but whati meant was like...hmmm....idk how to explain haha...

  • japanese sazh is fucking LOLOLOL xD

  • Fangs english Voice is my favorite.

  • I think all of their voices are good, although Sahz's voice is a little weird. I have not played the game yet, so I was curious how Hope and Vanille would sound (Because I think they are pretty cool, they will probably be my favorite characters)

I was scared to hear Hope's voice, cause I saw it was the kid from Phineas & Ferb who does his voice. I was like, oh no! cause I've heard that voice before and it is really annoying. I liked that it wasn't annoying like it is on that show.

  • Lightning's English VA is good, but trying to compete with Sakamoto Maaya and her ridiculously awesome Ryougi Shiki voice is futile.

  • now a black guys voice always sounds better in english

  • I'm suprised that I actually prefer the dubbing over subbing this time.

  • Amazingly.. I say English. But then again a lot of the dubbing quality has gone up over the past few years. Who knows, maybe we'll get anime that almost everyone won't complain about in English in a few years.

  • I'm curious, whats everyone's reasoning for hating Vanille's voice? o.O Is it the accent?

  • I'm absolutely impressed by the fact that they bothered lip syncing every single word over for the translations.

  • o_o I just nerdgasmed so hard.

  • I liked the english version way better. Their voices were much more unique (with exception for Light since her voice actresses were both amazing) Serah and Vanille have this voice that you just hear everywhere in japanese games/anime. But I love Hope's and Jihl's jap version. One conveys emotion very well and the other is just because :)

This is just my lengthy opinion

  • Vanille and hope were horrible just by story basis alone. They annoyed me, especially hope. Which is weird cause it's vincent martella from everybody hates chris and Phineas off phineas and ferb. Lol.

  • Vanille and hope were horrible just by story basis alone. They annoyed me, especially hope. Which is weird cause it's vincent martella from everybody hates christ and phineas off phineas and ferb. Lol.

  • they don't need the accents for the characters hate them.

  • well for me, the english voices are much better. I just can't stand the japanese language, everytime i hear it an image of a pervert business man in a suit raping a 13 year old schoolgirl appears in my head

  • Hope sounds like a 12 year old in the japanese version but in english he sounds like hes 16

  • @BeastlyTURTLE555 His age is literally right in the middle. He's supposed to be 14.

  • The english actors were actually decent in this game. :)

  • I absolutely love Vanille's voice in the English version. I don't know why a lot of people don't like it.

  • @nin109 I like it too, but at the start i could not really hear her when she was speaking ^^

  • i think the voice acting was well done in both languages for this game. bravo to the voice actors. ENG and JAP

  • Lightning - JP Snow - English Vanille - I like both her voices, but I think her japanese VA had more emotion. Sazh - ENGLISH! Hope - English Serah - English Jihl - undecided. Yaag - English Fang - English Overall the Japanese voices were way too anime like for my taste while the english actors seemed more realistic and down to earth.
  • @Grimoire93 Yeah cuz the english have different accent. Japanese are pretty much the same

  • SUGAH AND RAINBOZ!

  • Japanese sounds terrible, but Vanille's english voice sucks too.

  • I LOVE Snow's English voice. it's.... sexy. :DD

Lightning's especially love her Japanese voice best.

  • Lightning: Both

    Snow: Japanese

    Vanille: JAPANESE!!!!!

    Sazh: English

Hope: Both (Like Japanese a bit more though)

    Serah: Both

    Jihl: Both

    Yaag: Japanese

Fang: JAPANESE (I hate the bad accents ._.)

  • @HaylsLockhart Fang's Australian accent in English is 100% accurate. No offense, but you should know the accents well before you comment on them.

  • I actually think Light's voice in japanese is a little bit "calm" for the role, I think the english voice actress did a really good job at that

  • Yaag = Zevran? Jon Curry, you rule.

  • Sazh's english voice is waaay better, but everyone else's Jap voice is better. Especially Hope!

  • i'd rather have vanille's japanese VA in the english version... = =

  • best english voice was... YAAG ROSCH

  • I thought I recognised Lightning's JP VA... I was thinking 'humm~ sounds like Haruhi from OHSHC... -reads comments- !!! MAAYA SAKAMOTO~~ Legend!'

I think that overall, Lightning's voice is the best all round in terms of both eng and jp... But still I ADORE most of the voices, especially Vanille's scene where she screams at Sazh 'What do you want me to do!?' sends shivers down my spine every time :D

FF has some of the best dub work everr.

  • "sugar and rainbows sister!" LOL

  • I think the only one that sounds good in Japanese is Serah. Hope sounds annoying as hell and Sazh.............sounds awful. Just awful compared to the english one.

  • How can you be objective when you only one of the languages. But I do think that the dub is pretty good. But the Japanese sounds more emotional and suits better.

  • @IsThisWhyIHateYou Why do people think YELLING REALLY LOUD = Emotion?? Because that seems to be the only difference between the Japanese and English dialogue.

  • Hope: There's a 104 days of summer vacation~

Hope's English voice actor does a really good job of changing and showing his character's growth in maturity. However, after finding out that Hope's VA is the same VA for Phinease (from Phinease and Ferb) I kinda can't respect both characters like a should. LOL

  • haha i just replied to the other video, i think vanille's voice is ok now. because sazh's voice acting actually said "u think everything will be sugar and rainbow?" hahahaha! so yes vanille's voice suits sazh's expression there =)

but one thing is obvious, the english voice acting in 13 is a huge huge improvement from the previous finalfantasy series voice actings.

  • am i the only one who thought Fang's accent was, not English, not Australian, but Irish?

one of my teachers is from the coast of britain, next to Ireland, and she sounds exactly like her.

    O_O

  • @nelmsters yeah I thought it was Irish at first too! But it turns out it was based on Australian accent cuz the English voice actress lived in Syndey for a while (:

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for the comparison. If you look closely, the lip movements are a bit different!

  • I prefer the Japanese voice for Vanille.

But I prefer the American voice for Hope.

I'm not too bothered about the others.

  • Just wondering, how the heck did they get the accent for Vanille? ._.

  • I acutally like both versions.

  • Hm, I actually like the English dubbing better. And I NEVER like English dubbings. I especially like Fang's voice and I absolutely LOVE her accent... I don't know why you people dislike it that much...

  • @LilyBriscoe814

i agree. the original japanese dubs are always the best in my opinion, but for this game, i thought the english dubs were the BEST fit.

  • @LilyBriscoe814 I think so too! I actually like the English better. I like Vanille though. But all the characters are cool!

  • @LilyBriscoe814 Fang's accent is Australian. Of course it's awesome ^_^

  • i think all the characters suit there voices in english besides Vanille.

I mean no disrespect to anyone, but her voice annoys me

  • The Australian accents are a mix of British and Australian. We don't speak exactly like that. Some of the vowels are british sounding.

  • Jihl Nabaat's got some big ass titties.

Gadot looks like a cooler version of Wakka.

  • is there anyway u can change it to japanese? lol

  • Laura Bailey + Final Fantasy = I don't even care about the rest of them. Laura Bailey~ ♥

  • vanille and hope in jap really suck =S at least for me..

  • Ferb! I know what we're gonna do today!

Damn! I just found out that the dude doing Hope's voice is the same one behind Phineas!

  • where the heck d'you get Acadon? just curious.

  • @L0rnch This is a classic case of never trusting wikipedia

  • @L0rnch LOLZ ACADON?! WHAT?!

  • Lightningin: Good in both languages

Snow: his english voice actor makes him sound like a douche

Vanille: I like her english voice actor cause of her cute accent

Sazh: his japanese voice actor makes him sound scary 0.o lol

Hope: his japanese makes him sound like more dramatic, his enlish sounded a bit monotone to me

Serah: her japanese voice actor makes her sound older, english; like a 16 year old girl

Fang: her english accent makes her sound awesome

(the rest don't matter to me)

  • @Mateko77 Fang's English accent makes her sound like a tom boy lesbian.

  • @neomysterio I guess she sorta does, but i like it, haha

  • @neomysterio Fang has an Australian accent, not an English accent. You don't come across as being very bright, lol XD

  • @ATKillZ @neomysterio I am from Australia and we sound exactly like she does. I think I would know, I''ve lived here my whole life. She pronounces some vowels like a British person. If you were bright you would have noticed that.

I know your type, you insult people on the internet to make yourself feel big, how pathetic.

  • @neomysterio I'm sorry but Fang has an Australian accent. Have I offended you somehow? Well anyway, if Fang doesn't have an Australian accent, she definitely doesn't have a British accent. And Vanille seemed to have three different accents!

  • @Mateko77 Again, Fang has an Australian accent, NOT an English accent. None of the voice actors in this game were English/ British.

  • @ATKillZ well when i said "English" i ment the english released version's voiceactors, not the voice itself, haha

  • Yaag Rosch's english voice is the best imo!

  • @JPTorres2694 His voice sounded like 'I don't give a shit about you but I'm still gonna kill you because I want to anyway' everytime he opened his mouth. Damn it fits his villain persona, that mocking kind of voice.

  • I think I like the English better, but thats because it's the one I understand.

  • I have to say, in general, the english cast is superior. I think only Lightning's Japanese VA is better than her english counterpart.

  • @ChibiFallingStar Really I actually thought Lightning's voice is pretty good in english. The one I thought could've been better was Vanille. That's it.

  • @Onlymaybe7 Lightning's English VA isn't bad, but the Japanese VA does a better job. The English VA sounds really old, while the Japanese VA sounds like an 18 year old. Vanille is suppose to sound annoying, so I thought the English VA did a good job of showing her perkiness. Again, JP VA isn't bad, I just thought the EN VA had more personality.

  • Tbh, Vanille and Hope may sound really crappy, but it is not because their acting is bad, it is just because their voices don't fit with the characters they are given, seriously, Vanille sounds like she's 13 (she is 19).

English Sazh kick the ass of Japanese Sazh, though!

  • i like th eenglish better the emotion seems better when they speak

  • @H0Tappsnow sorry bad grammer

  • A possible reason the Eng dubs fare well here is maybe it's not as weird as regular anime as opposed to CGI

  • "You think if you die, it'll be sugar and rainbows???" I couldn't help but laugh at that.

  • i like snows english voice than japanese but lightnings good but vanniles jp voice i dun like it sazh too hopes good both jp n english serah both good ACADON WHAT!? WHERE DID U GET THA NAME!? i dun like fangs jp voice

  • Hope's Japanese voice irks me like nails on a chalkboard.. absolutely hideous. His english voice is outstanding!

  • Sazh's voice is the only one I find to be significantly better in English, on the other hand, I hate Lightning's English voice and i much prefer her jap verison. All the rest are pretty much more or less the same standard.

  • Although I prefer Lightning's Japanese voice, she doesn't sound too bad in English either.

Snow, Vanille, Hope, Fang, Rosch = Japanese.

Serah sounds a more mature in English. Sazh sounds pretty good in both.

  • the english voices were fantastic

  • I think the english voice actors are amazing for dubs. The thing is that, a lot of people (including me) think that japanese voice actors are superior, mainly because of the fact that we can't judge the tone of voice because we don't know what they're saying word for word.

  • @JessAMV exactly what I was thinking~!

  • killthrillabs i think the english voice sucks i perfer the japanese voice over. The eng voice actors are never good as the japanese actors.

  • Haha, I think it's funny that Sazh is Gai-sensei from Naruto in Japanese. XD

  • lgihtning's japanese voice is sooo much better than the english (in my opinion)

  • Lightning = JP by far (not that the EN one is bad, it's just Maaya is that good)

    Snow = About the same

Sazh = EN by far (he's black)

    Hope = About the same

    Vanille = JP by far

    Serah = JP by far

I prefer Japanese voices, though I can't deny that Sazh's EN voice is much better. No JP voice actors can imitate that Martin Lawrence style of speech good enough (even with localization).

  • Vanille's definitely could've used some work. If you listen to her VA just talking, she sounds waaay better, when in the game the accent comes and goes (and she also appears to be on helium?). Though tbh, even in japanese she sounds somewhat prepubescent :|.

Other than that, stunning performances from all. Personally prefer Sazh's and Fang's in english though :P (Sazh's jap voice = too deep, with Fang I s'pose it's just a weakness for the accent amirite ;D)

  • Bah, why on earth didn't we get an option to turn on Japanese voice acting? I absolutely hate the English voices in the game. :(

  • english is fucking insultingly LAUGHABLE!!!

but i guess, all the fan boys who love the dubb so much are i assume the ones who watch cartoon-network and KIDsWB who literally pronounce every letter and vowel in a name and word.

i cant wait for international, watch international sell out of prints in weeks while the dubbed ones are marked "USED 7$ gamestop"

dubbing one of the most beautiful pieces of work in the Final Fantasy Franchise, just fucking insults me to no ends..

  • @Piokruts

    Shut it weeboo.

  • @ColonelCarnage thanks for proving my point you faggot, go watch your yugioh and dubbed non-sense and leave the big boys alone ok?? ok.

  • @Piokruts

What was your point? That you are a weeboo? Wahhh I hate dubs wahhhhh

  • The majority of the characters sound better in english in this game. i agree with Flewan. except that i think lightnings voice could use more emotion, and vanilles voice is a bit too.... girly i guess you could say. except in the more dramatic scenes, she sounds more convincing. Serah's voice is amazing when she cries out to snow, hopes voice is a LOT better than the japanese version. snow, well i think its about the same skill in japanese and english

  • i would prefer to read the subtitles because, the japanese voices are so much better, just imagine Naruto dubbed .... its a joke!!

i hope they put it as an option next time!

  • I prefer the english voice for all the characters except Vanille and Serah. They sound weird. Other than that all the english voices I think match better to the characters. Especially Sazh, Jihl, Fang, and Hope

  • Surprisingly, the english version sounds a lot better, especially snow's. The japanese snow voice really doesn't suit his appearance...

  • The dude who does Hope Estheim's voice is the same guy who was Chris' friend on "Everybody Hates Chris", and Phineas on "Phineas and Ferb". Just thought I'd mention it.

  • The thing is just that voice acting is a BIG DEAL in Japan. Those people make more money than we ever will. Because of that they get better training than English voice actors, although I have to admit that the English ones in XIII were very convincing. Also Japanese speak different. Even in normal life they seem to have more emotion in their voice, and when English voice actors try to imitate that it often sounds weird. Anyway, great video! Thanks a lot!

  • No, no it is not. Most of the obsessive anime fans in our country will tell you that because they've never researched it. Voice Acting is considered one of the WORST jobs you can actually get in Japan and to aspire to be a VA would be like aspiring to be a Garbage Man here. They're paid minimum wage and nothing more. Two, I'm curious if you've ever heard a Japanese person talk or if you're just talking as a typical "expert" of someone who watches anime.

  • @photonman91 wat

  • English Lightning has a good voice but she sounds too robotic and forced. Japanese Lightning clearly shows her skill by using a wide array of tones. Also the japanese characters show more realism, like when they are running around you can hear them breathing heavily or when they are climbing up you can tell how it takes stamina to do so.

  • @Furyotic Usually Japanese voice acting is better, but in this case its overly dramatic.

Reminds me of old Captain Kirk's acting style, lol!

  • I thought the english voice actors were actually pretty good - Lightning's especially.

However, the english voice actor for Vanille...well im not even sure what accent she attempts to have when trying to act the part. Is she trying to be British or what? Cus i hear Australian and like Southern USA in there. (but that would make sense cus she's australian then moved to the US a few years back). But the accent sounds really forced to me :/

  • To be completely honest, I'm very surprised at the high quality of the English voice acting. Like most avid gamers who love JRPG's and such who prefer Japanese voice overs, I was expecting the usual crap. But SE did a good job casting this time round. Lots of good actors some of which are in other great titles like Mass Effect 2 (Lightning also did Li'ara from ME). Although I do prefer the original voices for some characters :P (venille and hope :P )

  • I love the Japanese voices of Vanille and Serah.

And from the English Version I like Fang, Snow and Sazh.

From both I love Lightning and Hope.

  • Lightning sounds very similar to some extent.

  • japanese language has to much of a high tone for everything they say,as in english is low tone making it possible to be high tone whenever strong emotions kick in...so i think the english version is way better =]

  • Lightning's japanese voice actor is he same person who did haruhi in ouran highschool host club.

  • Sazh Fang were the best. Fang was the best IMO. All in all I'm satisified with the voice acting. But I thought the voice acting in FF12 was the best.

  • >Not comparing Vanille's cute parts

..This is why you don't makes these videos until you have actual proper footage.

  • yay a game with good English voice acting. Honestly I think I prefer English in this one overall. Mostly cuz i think the black guy's voice is far better in English...
