It wasnt one thing that made the soviet union collapse, Reagen put pressure on the soviets to invest heavily on defense when they couldnt afford to, pope john paul the second inspired many in the eastern bloc to fight for solidarity, and continued human rights violations and the afghan war payed a heavy financial and PR cost, not to mention the terrible organization of the economy, all these factors combined brought done the soviets, not one single source couldve done it alone

The US played a partial role in the collapse, but it had almost nothing to do with them. The Soviet system was it's downfall, it had nothing to do wtih political oppression, it had everything to do with the Centralization of the entire economy and the same wages for everyone. Farmers stopped producing food, people came to work to sit around, when you do not have an incentive, you will not try, that is how humanity works. Including unbalanced budgets, 35% of all GDP was going to the arms race.
