  • never heard any of this stuff in my life

  • any idea why they so rarely played it?

  • When/where was this taped? I'd sure like a copy of this somehow.

    thnx

    r.d

  • this song is so much cooler live, and thats saying a lot, because the album one is beatly

  • Great selection here, Thanks!

  • me, i really love the sound and feel of the song. :D i love the blend of the instruments. :D i have to admit, i'm really oblivious to the meaning of the song though

  • Slip Kid is one of the best rock songs, IMHO, and one of my favorite Who songs.

Granted, it doesn't represent The Who well.

I'm dissapointed that this song kind of fell along the wayside in the Who's repertoire, because, again IMO, alot of The Who's stuff was kind of less than impressive after Quadrophenia.

That having been said, please don't think I'm hating on The Who, because I'm not. They're my favorite band and have been ever since the first time I heard one of their songs.

  • great song but I can see why they wouldn't want to play it live. I never really thought the live "Squeeze Box" clicked either, and supposedly "Dreaming From the Waist" is Pete's least favorite song to play. Tough goin for By Numbers

  • He didn't like playing Dreaming From the Waist because John stole the show! The bass in that song is so fucking epic!

  • Pete is sending a personal message throughout the Numbers album. Love (most) of it.

  • One of the toughest songs to play live for them.Never heard by a cover band(if so,tell me).The song is in 7/8 time. Also has tricky feedback/volume swells performed on a Gibson Explorer guitar.Keep that together on stage...Dig the who!

  • Er, sorry to be picky, but these songs are both in 4/4 time.......best band ever.

  • @MrGbh63 After counting from the intro,I agree,it is 4/4.Just that the riff, and hand claps make it sound pushed with eighths, but still comes out common.

  • Yes, sounds like they're playing with a backing tape, probably why the rhythm sounds a little stiff, must be a hard 1 to replicate live. One of my all time fave songs of theirs tho

  • Yeah, I think hear some piano in there (The Who never used an onstage keyboardist until after Kieth die).

I always understood the song to be about aging, and specifically a spiteful shot at younger bands that "someday you're going to be an old fart too". At least that's how I've always interpreted the line "You're sliding down the hill like me".

  • Uh, no! In fact Slip Kid happens to be one of their best songs. especially in context. What came next? Who Are You with Who Are You and Sister Disco. Both great but Slip Kid was a part off The who's last great gasp before Keith's passing. The end of The Who's formal rock royalty era. Not to mention Dreamin' From the Waist. Another story. Long live The Who!

  • The Who are the best band ever in my opinion. Is Slip Kid one of their worst songs? Dreamin is an excellent song.

  • For my money a bad song from the Who (my favorite band BTW) IS .....Now I'm a Farmer....it cracks me up evertime...now I'm a farmer and I'm diggin diggin diggin diggin, not Pets best, check it out, Slip Kid is classic good stuff.

  • I am still not convinced that Slip kid is classic WHO.

If they played this representing a classic WHO song I would be upset.

So many better songs on Numbers like dreamin,in love, friends,in a hand, imaging, much I booze.

  • Thats your opinion and represents no basic truth for others, sorry.

  • Comment removed

  • It's all about the gourds, man!

  • You don't think those lyrics are good because in 'Numbers the song is used out of context. Slip Kid was (and now IS(horray!)) part of Lifehouse. The story is told through the eyes of a farmer. This farmer, named Ray, travels south to find his daughter Sally who has gone to the concert that brings rock music from the 20th century back, and save people from the fake, virtual lives they are living in their life suits. VERY complex story. Listen to Lifehouse Chronicles if you haven't already.

  • Sounds like the band playing along with a tape of extra instruments like cowbell etc.

  • this is great, thanks!!!

  • I wonder why they performed this song so seldom

  • they performed it in london this past december, hopefully they'll play it more often cause i'd love to see them play it again or at least get a recording of it

  • By the way, amorrisseyprodromou, thanks for your Who uploads. You have a great supply.

There is this other video channel, Veoh, it's called and there is a full Who concert from 74 in some football stadium to find. Check it out!

    Cheers

  • @amorrisseyprodromou Without Entwhistle, it doesn't count.

  • @dockaiser Pete didn't like to play it : It was his least favourite song to perform live.

  • @dockaiser dreaming from the waist that is

  • @dockaiser ....I love this song ! I loveso much of the Who and it seems that a whole generation under me doesn't have a clue how frickin'bad shit kickin rockers they really were and won't take the time to learn what real rock was!!! great tune and thanks for putting it up bro!

  • @dockaiser pete felt it was technically hard to convey on stage....

  • My all-time favorite Who song...thank you for posting this! Great!

  • what exactly did pete mean with the line in DREAMING FROM THE WAIST which says: " I´m dreaming of the day I can share the wealth" ? Sounds weird for a man who once said, when asked, what THE WHO still meant to him, answered: " a million $ per year ". Which " wealth " was to share here??!

  • I would imagine tat he was saying he's dreaming of a day when "money doesn't matter so much" Getting past the "stuff" Growing beyond..Baba stuff, letting go of the tangibles. A noble goal, but you can't pay the rent with enlightenment..

  • It's a song about sexual frustration. "Share the wealth..." isn't meant to be taken literally.

It's a fairly typical metaphor for Pete. Like "Squeeze Box" from the same album.

  • it's a hard, hard world....Pete's the best...

  • roger daltrey was at his best in this tour!

  • Mr. John Fucking Entwistle!

  • saw them in Atlanta on this tour. Pete actually played the "Blue Red & Gray" in between songs. it's not listed but I remember it clearly

  • Moonie=Thunder.

  • if you happen to find a recording of "Blue red and gray" from this tour, id love to trade for it

  • was this the show where they did waspman?

  • i accidentally deleted the comment from whoever replied to your comment so i'll write it for you. this show is from 1976, march 11 madison square garden. if you can find it, get it cause there is great sound quality and such, the show you are talking about is from 1974, and the sound quality on that boot is not all that great. but that show is also available somewhere.

  • love this...amazing for an audience recording...love the by numbers stuff...2 of the best tracks on it...how many friends is also a hidden gem :)

  • how many friends is my favourite song on the album,

do you know if they ever performed it?

  • sadly no. it would be great if somebody could post petes original demo (if it exists apart from his private archives)

  • yah, man... good song

they say Keith would always cry when he heard it (I'd believe it)

  • unbelievable. good find

  • Wow hadn't ever heard one of the live versions- thanks for posting.

  • Awesome sound on this boot. Is there any video on this show?

  • no. i wish there were. believe it or not, this is actually an audience recording. i don't know what equipment was used, etc, but it is from the audience

  • awesome. Definitely the best quality live version of slip kid that i've ever heard. Nice find
