@tariqziyad some impressive data you have there. True, after Hitler's surprise attack Russian army had to leave equipment and lost a lot of machines to the germans. After that, we had to recruit all men 18-49 to fight, so production wasn't keeping up. However, in 1943 the problem was more or less solved.
The biggest problem of red army were lack of capable officers. Again , at the end of the war , they were trained and hence the results.

The Soviet peace with Japan allowed the Soviet Union to deploy General Zukov and his battle hardened Mongolian divisions to the Eastern Front where they played key roles in to stopping the German advance.
This battle had a big strategic impact on World War II. The drubbing that the Japanese received at Khalkhin Gol convinced them to change strategy and attack “softer” targets in the Pacific theater. When Germany attacked Russia in 1941, Japan refused to join in. Instead Japan launched an attack against the United States and Britain.
The Japanese couldn’t dislodge them and the entire Japanese advance bogged down. July turned into a war of attrition with neither side making much headway. In August the Russians had built up their forces enough to launch a decisive armored counter attacked that destroyed much of the Japanese infantry.

The failure of the recon force was in part do to the Japanese commander’s refusal to retreat and in part due to poor cooperation and support between Japanese units. The Russians kicked japanese ass in manchurria, killing 87,000 japs and capturing almost 600,000. And they did this in less than two weeks, simply amazing. Japanese tanks were a joke, they were not match for T-34/85's and IS-2 heavy tanks.

The Japanese got a rude awakening when they realized that the Russians they were fighting in 1945, fresh from their victory over Nazi Germany weren't the same demoralized incompetent ones from the time of Tsar Nicholas II.

It has to be said, warfare on the Russian scale is a different animal to what most other peoples are use to. The reason why Ghengis Kahn was so successful was as more to do with the scale of strategic thinking then it was to do with numbers. Kutuzov understood this as did Zhukov. You get bogged down in a fight in Russia, expect to get swamped! Bernard Montgomery's rules of warfare - Rule number 1 ...do not invade Russia. Respect!

Russia even traded a lot of it's technology overseas, to help allies for example anti-air radar system.
again, Cavalry proved to effective in ww2, it was extremely mobile unit, that could go through forests and swamps, where nothing else could.

And unlike japan, US troops were bloody cowards. There are anecdotes of afro-amercan divisions dropping their weapons and running away at the first sign of germans.

@tariqziyad some impressive data you have there. True, after Hitler's surprise attack Russian army had to leave equipment and lost a lot of machines to the germans. After that, we had to recruit all men 18-49 to fight, so production wasn't keeping up. However, in 1943 the problem was more or less solved.
The biggest problem of red army were lack of capable officers. Again , at the end of the war , they were trained and hence the results.

Elite Cavalry armies are still used around the world. During the WW2 general Belov, using cavalry army destroyed the tank army of Guderian. Belov's cavalry was pretty much the most effective unit of the whole ww2.
And with Japan, Russia basically destroyed Japanese forces in China and Korea, so hearing chinese or koreans bitching about Russians is puzzling.

Your nation was knocked out of the war after a month of fighting; Japan surrendered mostly because it was nuked by two atom bombs. Comparing 724,013 Japanese casualties in Manchuria to the 1,540,000 French soldiers who surrendered (disregarding dead and wounded) has lots to say. A lot to say seeing that your country would have surrendered quite quickly if the Germans had atom bombs to drop on your country.

They did know they were no match for European Armies. What says alot about my country is that we did three times more damage per man to Hitler than the Soviets did during Barbarossa. When Japan faced Stalin, he ran over them like they weren't even there.

@stalkingalizee By the time the Soviets blitzed through Manchuria Japan was nearly completely unable to supply its forces with any more supplies since its navy was obliterated. You again are incorrect on the main significant reason as to why Japan surrendered. Japan knew very well what the nukes were as they perfectly knew the nukes "exploded" and obliterated they're cities whole. Japan was willingly preparing itself to be invaded by conventional Allied Forces and not wiped out of the map.

The Red Army *went after japanese nationals* The japanese imperialists had created segregated sections throughout "Manchuria" and and therefore in the cities such as *Shenyang* there was separate identifiable japanese sections which made it easy for the Red Army to go there to target japanese nationals. Though Han were victims they were "incidental" victims to the targeted japanese victims.

A single city of St. Peterburg lost two million dead to starving and air raids under nazy blocade. Japs did same to Chinese and Russians witnessed this and had a little love to them as well. For an average Soviet any Japanese or German 'national' was viewed as a pure evil being just like if you could see a devil in a street.

In the summer months of 1939, just prior to the official start of World War II, Russia and Japan fought a huge undeclared war along the disputed Manchuria Mongolia boarder. 57,000 Russians fought 75,000 Japanese. Hundreds of tanks and aircraft from both sides were involved in the battle.

Against the JAPanese, the Soviets weren't even trying. And I MEAN IT: the Soviets didn't even come close to using what they had available to them against the JAPanese in Manchuria.

ALL japanese documents show that the Soviet assault into Manchuria was when the japanese KNEW the war lost.
It was very simple for the japanese: the Soviets were steamrolling thru Manchuria but MUCH more importantly was that the Soviets had also stormed into Southern Sakhalin and thus could amphibiously invade Hokkaido.
For the japanese invasion from the north (Hokkaido) was FAR more problematic than invasion from the south (Kyushu).
For the japanese Soviet invasion meant the war was lost.
