You meaning that it's blue? You can do that in options :)

the kill effects from the alien blaster look like animations from mass effect

There are many things on this that share similarities to ME special effects. Laser to incendiary, plasma to toxic and this to ice, though there is no shatter after the enemy is defeated (instead they are vaporized).
