Dad, stop using my YouTube account. Everytime I get on here I find that someone signed me out. Then I look in the history and I find old people stuff.
Through my business I had the plaeasure of metting many of my MGM heart throbs...Miss Grayson, June Allyson, Ann Miller, Nanette Fabray and Cyd Charisse..even Miss Ruby Keeler ( a non-MGM star) but a great lady of early film dance. They were the best,
@tallpaul521 *Sigh* may I be jealous and show respect to you simultaneously! The era of true talent and true stars! Thanks to my parents, I know about these legends.
How could someone 'dislike' this video. Oy, people are unbelievable. This is so awesome! I think I like this version better than the first version in the film. I can't decide. They just rock!
So sorry to hear of Miss Grayson's passing. She was always one of my favorite stars in the MGM constellation. I had the pleasure of meeting her back in the 1980's..I have a treasured photo of her with me, next to Miss Ruby Keeler.
An angel just left us. Thanks Kathryn for gracing us with your presence. Nobody in combination with your voice and stunning beauty could have been better. Hope to see you in heaven. It will be heaven if I do.
Their first performance of this great song was the very first time I'd ever heard such singing. I vowed, right then and there, that I'd learn to sing like that, and, now, I finally have, all thanks to the inspiration I received from Miss Grayson and Mr. lanza's performance in "That's Entertainment".:)
It's kind of sad that Miss Grayson is only remembered for her duets with Lanza. Don't get me wrong, I love them both. Lanza was destroyed by Hollywood. I remember Miss Grayson in "Kiss Me Kate"..her best acting and comedic role.
Agreed, but, since her passing, many clips from her solo work in films are being posted, so, perhaps, at long last, it'll receive the recognition it's due.:)
@tallpaul521 Ah yes, I love that movie. It really was one of the best. I heard it was even an early 3D movie. I wish they would pick it up, clean it up a bit and maybe figure out a way to put it in the cinemas now. Just think about hearing all that singing with today's sound system.
@tallpaul521 unfortunately, back, then, the music snobs were powerful enough to discredit talented artists like grayson and lanza and make it stick. the proof is that, to this day, they are still put down by people who have never really listened to them sing. so, what do we have today? we worship the likes of andrea bocelli because he sings both popular music and opera. however, i find his voice to be unimpressive. just my opinion.
@jgraif I agree with you about Bocelli! And about the discounting of great talent by the Met snobs in the day. They rejected Mario Lanza and Sergio Franchi.. still two of my favorite tenors.
@jgraif I have to agree--Bocelli has a thin, winy voice--he can get some high notes but only after struggling. Never could see what all the fuss was all about. His voice is like Pavarotti's after coming out of the dryer--shrunken.
Mario and Kathryn couldn't stand each other, which makes their performance all the more impressive. Mario would eat cloves of garlic before kissing scenes with Kathryn just to upset her.
I suspect your source is incorrect. I lived in Santa Monica, Cal. for 30 years, and I knew Kathryn. I spoke with her at length many times. She often talked of her time singing with Mario Lanza and she voiced admiration for him, and certainly admired his voice. She absolutely never mentioned any animosity.
@SunsetSix thank you for posting this. i had the great pleasure of accompanying licia albanese back in the 1980's. i asked her about lanza. she immediately became "dreamy" and told me that he was without equal. enough said.
@msch1981; Mark Twain said a lie has a thousand lives...this is proof. This was an untrue tabloid lie written 60 years ago that's still being repeated. In the documentary, Lanza: the American Caruso, Grayson is interviewed extensively. Her comments " Mario was a wonderful man with an outstanding tenor voice who was a delight to work with". Just like Sgt Friday, "just the facts, sir". It's easy I wish people would check before posting here.
In response to msch1981...the rumor has it that it was Doretta Morrow, Marios co-star in "Because You're Mine" was the person who "tasted" one of Marios pranks.
My apologies. I downloaded the movie and actually skipped part 4 in which Mario and Katherine sing it. Thanks to your upload I noticed it and may of otherwise missed an entire and enjoyable episode.
Did they actually sing this version in The Toast of New Orleans. I know they sang another version early in the movie. Mario has always been my favourite singer. I was at school when he started and was the odd man out liking Mario when everyone else liked Elvis, the Beetles and that crowd.
Kathyrn - such devastating beauty, with an equally devastating voice.. Those awesome cat eyes...Wow - I am in love! And Mario, what else needs to be said -- I truly believe Mario was BETTER than Caruso. Such a shame he died so young. The combo of this two is spectacularly divine.. gotta find this movie...
madison. I cannot understand why you have said this. From your favorites list, you seem to be a man who appreciates great singers. For me, Mario is none of the things you say. He is a man with a great voice, charisma, very goods looks, and most of all, a nice guy.
How could you say that??? swanningaround is right... Mario Lanza is a great singer! It's a pity he died so early... just when he was starting to be famous...

Nice of Mario to let Kathryn lead, he could have easily drowned her out which would have ruined the duet.

Very gentlemanly at the end, letting her have the high note.
So sad Mr. Lanza didn't live long enough to realize his true potential.

Not quite.:) I'm a pop/soul singer, but, I did undergo classical voice training to learn how to project & protect my voice.
That said, though, I just may take you up on your request. It's not a bad idea.
Take care.:)
