There is no sensor around the spear that keeps it from going up. The only sensor on the ground is the small pressure pad you step on to activate the effect. Check out the behind the scenes footage of mine I just posted, showing close ups of the pads.
I was fortunate enough to actually have the job of playing Indy in the show. The spikes don't stop just because somethings over it. From what I remember / or was told....it actually stoped if it hit something on the way up and it took 30lbs of pressure to stop it. Hope that helps.

no its cause theres scensors on the sticks and when it has something over it it wont go up
