A little disappointed that Kyle Smith didn't lend his usual surliness to the review of this film. While I don't think the movie was horrible,it was just adequate, very impressive visually but got way too much credit for how it depicted the political troubles.Zack Snyder only hints at the issues without challenging the viewer,I was very surprised to see him state explicitly in an interview that one can look past the subversiveness (which is what made the novel so original) to see its "fun"
this movie is a classic if you ask me. it seems that there are only a handful of people that agree with me though :( i suggest you watch the directer's cut again then make a final judgement because most of the comments bash it for not following the comic all that well.
Who ever says that the ending disappoints because it wasnt faithful the to novel is fucking retarded. I loved the novel but didn't like the movie. The movie has no climactic build up, you're never curious to find out who the bad guy is, the ending is weak, and it goes back and forth in time way to much. I understand that that's what they did in the novel but it doesn't work as well in a movie. I'd love to see a movie of the watchmen based on the events before the seperation of the watchmen and minutemen. Yes they didn't have many enemies but it would still be a cooler movie than this. My opion.
@Pigroota Even Alan Moore, the WRITER of the novel Watchmen didn't want to see his work hit the big screen. Why should i be silenced, because this movie was AWFUL? But if you liked it i guess i can understand considering that you've got shit for brains. It's people like you who are ruining the movie industry. Is he serious? The movie might have been 4 stars if they had stuck more to the book. Everyone had super-strength when only Dr. Manhattan was supposed to have powers, the movie was made way more violent making parts that were funny terrifying because you didn't see it coming, the sex scenes were porn (as if you cared about either of those losers anyway, which is sad because I liked Nite Owl in the book) and the villain was so obvious it was depressing. Allan Moore rolled over in his grave!!

the movie is a dialogue of different philosophies. manhattan is determinist, meaning he seese everything as cause and effect. rorschach is a moral objectivist, meaning he sees everything as good and evil. comedian is a nihilist and sees everything as a joke. and ozymandius is a utilitarian and kills 15 million for the greater good. but maybe he's a villain from a deontologist's perspective, meaning his action was just an action and the end doesnt justify the means, because nothing 'ends'.

Some people who absolutely loved the comic hated the movie. I forgot about 80% of the watchmen the moment I left the theater. I think it's because it never really follows a character, you don't feel connected to anyone, so I didn't really care much when things happened. Perhaps thats a sacrifice in making the movie true to the comic? I can't tell if it was incredible or terrible.
2. Poor composition, editing-- it felt like it was made by an 8th grader.
3. Mis-use of amazing music like the Koyanniskatsi theme, attempt to amputate good art from it's original context and frankenstein it together.
4. Pretense at philosophical depth, which does not deliver. Eg Dr. Manhattan's view of time. We actually get to see inside this this super-evolved entity's omniscience and it's just a series of fucked-up flashbacks, like uh, memory.
we actualli dont really get to see Dr. manhattans omniscience because Ozmandyias (spell) had those 'things' being omitted from antarctica which was blocking his ability to do so...he could only unlock what was in Silk spectres memory and tell us his own story from memory........i felt the compostion was amazing...it felt like i was watchng a comic book...as opposed to a movie based on the comic-novel....did u see when night owl opened his door, after rorschach broke in for his beans....
fuck you youre the faggot. fuck you and suck on that big momma cock with your giant ass teeth and nasally little bitchy voice the in every video gmakes me want to chop off my dick and feed it to a pigglet!!
horrible acting(aside from rorscache), god awful music choices, awkward sex scenes made it uncomfortable for me to even stare in my friends direction for atleast 5 minutes...
for a movie that relies heavily on the idea of a nuclear war breaking out it sure doesnt make you feel like its going to happen
I don't know what movie some of you saw here... it was AMAZING! Great effects, great casting... the soundtrack was so random when I saw it I laughed out loud but it just worked. It's biggest flaw was that it followed the story line so well and let's face it... that's a flaw a lot more comic-book inspired movies should have (I'm talking to you X-Men and Spiderman... )
I just saw this, it was not a bad flick. I mean an entertaining movie woth watching, good way to kill 3 hours, lol. I agree with this video when he says that the visual effects were awesome. What did he mean when he said that it had "willingness to debate itself"?
i loved everything about this movie, and i'm not even a total 'Watchmen' fangirl!
the characters were all complex and flawed, the storyline was dark and engrossing.
i even loved the soundtrack. i dont think they were going for a 'Forrest Gump' timeline thing with the tunes because not every tune matched up with the timing of each scene. i think they were shooting more for a quirky atomospheric thing.
they succeeded.
i'd give this movie 5 stars for casting Jackie Earle Haley, alone.
This movie was bad because it wasn't a superhero movie, it was an art movie marketed as a superhero movie..
I came in not really expecting action but a good story with flattering direction...sadly the only good parts were the first and last 15 minutes and a blue guy who couldn't figure out to whether to wear clothes or not..not to mention the awful music editor who doesn't deserve another job in hollywood (hallelujah during a sex scene?)
the fuck ups who didn´t like the movie are just to fuckin stupid to understand it and they want that boring incredible hulk and shit like that with lots of action and little story so they couldn´t handle a real story like watchmen
Anyone who i asked about it said it was shit and the're all in uni. i thought it was a steaming pile of dung. terrible dialogue. trying to be deep and complex but failing like a teenage poem.best line in the whole thing was "some things go on for ever" or some shit like that. too fucking right .
An incredibly intelligent, complex movie like this comes out which could serve as a talking point for all kinds of issues that face the world today, but all anyone talks about is the fact it has a dick in it. Its only a dick for christ's sake, get over it, half of us have them and the other half us us suck them, Kyle Smith falls into both camps I guess!
I never read the book but you can never make a movie out of a comic or book unless your going to see a 7 hour movie. People need to get a grib, its only a movie!lol I have to admit I was suprised how much I like the movie. Rorschach was amazing. I never thought I would like a superhero who is a demented, deranged, lunitic! He sound like Clint Eastwood on steriods. And if I was ever going to be a crazy vigilante it would be the Comedian. The blue god was cool, but Nite Owl? I only like his ride.
Shit I think I should review movies. But I partially agree with him. If you just look at the movie for itself its pretty interesting and complex but since the movie was trying to please fans and capture new audiences to the Watchmen Universe it didn't exactly accomplish it like the Graphic novel. Fuck i could go on and on.
i agree with him, but i think he should have said if ur a dunbass (zuticus1) that u won't like it because its not a regular hero movie (its better) it has a better focus on story and character depth than any book (maybe movie) ever
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! Good review! If you understood the movie and the depth of it's content, you probably liked it, if you didn't cause your an idiot..... you probably are going to bash it, just saying it is a movie made for a smarter audience, not like many other superhero movies that are aimed at kids
Well. . . some people are bashing it because they feel it has been watered down from the original graphic novel. The original graphic novel had much more depth to it. Also. . . there are some literal changes in the movie which are not in line with original story.
I suggest you read the graphic novel . . . but since you watched this movie prior to reading the novel, then (I hate to say) perhaps some of enjoyment or impact of the story from reading it will be ruined.
Is the movie as deep as the book? No way. But is it a really deep film? Yes!
No film, even a three hour one, could capture all the depth from the book. Seriously, what more could they possibly have done in less than three hours?
If you're familiar with most of Alan Moore's work, you'd know that "Watchmen" was written as an anti-superhero book in the sense that "the good guys" didn't and couldn't win "for the greater good!" The fact that the reviewer was disillusioned with OTHER superhero films could make him better appreciate what Moore originally set out to do: challenge the conventional instead of reinforce it!
if you read the comic you might not like it i never did and i really liked this movie it's different in many ways that being how there all pretty much like poor version of bruce wayne except night owl and the villian guy and dr. manhattan was hands down the most powerful person in the movie but his character development made him a loner from,,well humans but like i said if you read the comic then you might not like because you'll knit-pick details and tell everyone it's a horrible moive
no i read the comic and still liked the movie. there was alot that didn't make it from the book but i understood that they just didn't have time for everything.
it's funny whenever someone doesn't like this movie..they always mention Manhattan's, or from your words, "Blue guy's" nudity, and how it is overdone. He's nude pretty much through the entire graphic novel.
it just shows how immature some people are. It's an R rating. If you can't handle male nudity... than watch spiderman.
Only Manhattan has powers everyone else is a normal guy or girl. There is no real villain because Veidt is doing it for the good of man kind and the characters are fully developed
Sir, you are the biggest idiot I have meet! This movie is supposed to be, and is DEEP! Maybe you can't handle it because you're used to watching PG-13 movies.
hehehe true true. did ya know that someone brought an 8 year old to the showing i was at? shitty parents, lol. i LOVED the flick, seen it twice already and want to see it again
When I was watching the Midnight Premiere, somebody brought a 4-year-old to see it with him! The movie was rated R for a reason! Just because it has superheroes in it doesn't make it Spiderman or X-Men!
The point of the novel is that humanity is united against an unknown external threat and moves into a new era of hope and cooperation; not that humanity gets beaten into submission and forced into peace by an angry "God" figure. The human spirit is revived in the novel not broken. I could have forgiven practically anything they did with the movie if they only got the point of the ending right. As it stands, yeah, the movie missed the point.
In the book, Veidt kills millions to save billions, and brings peace based on a lie. Peace comes because the world chooses to unite against a common enemy. The other characters are then forced to decide if they should expose Veidt.

That's what I found most interesting about this review. It was interesting getting that perspective. He doesn't like comic book movies, but he gave Watchmen four stars. That shows that Watchmen is different. VERY different.
I would say I red the graphic novel and I would've given it a 4/4 stars but the only fact I was disappointed in was the cutting of other events that took place like the killing of hollis mason or the black kid reading the comic. Although it was nesecerry had to be within that 2-3 hour time zone. The good thing is they stayed true to the novel and visuals were amazing and really dumbs down the complication of the story + amazing scores. my opinion watch it 2 times :)
didn't really like the movie as much as i thought i would. I felt like it was very slow and long. I like long movies but not when they're slow, Overly political and the sex scenes just felt out of place and could have been edited out. i'm not apposed to sex on screen but it just didn't fit and not after the action or death scenes. The Plot , SFX and "the few" action scenes where really good. But he slowness combined with length and overly politcal storyline made it an overall C- IMHO.
I see your point abt sex scenes in movies, but the point of this one is that Dan cldnt get it up until he is "empowered" by the costume and when he puts it on and him & Silk Spectre rescue the people, he is finally "powerful" so the sex ensues. They did go overboard in the movie, but in the comic it makes sense.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the movie was absolutely awful...I have not read the comic so I represent the general movie going public. I was really the worst piece of $@#! movie I have ever seen. my money and time would have been better spent watching confessions of a shopaholic
let me guess ur one of the jacked up guys who went just to see some cool fights, well then u should have went to go see the shopoholic movie cause i think that would be easier for ur small brain to understand
Novel ending: If we work together we may triumph over common enemy and maybe learn something about each other.
Movie ending: We shouldn't fight each other beacuse we're now caged slaves who will be killed if we do and thus are no-longer in control of our own destinies.
Very different. I much prefer the graphic novel ending.
Ok, I been reading comics/graphic novel for almost 20 years. I didnt HATE this movie but it just felt a little FLAT. Rorschach, was incredible!!! I'm here in New York, the theater was full. Most, everyone had this look on their faces like we just been robbed. My girlfriend Hated it. Overall, as a comic book fan I say support it. But it just didn't have that WOW factor. 2 1/2 stars out of 5
Don't judge me but I think that this movie just blew away any comic made movie, super hero movie, ever made. The Dark Night was great, yes it was. The joker great performance. But all around this movie had great actors not big named but real great performances especially from the guy with the mask and hat. I think what made this movie that much better for me was not knowing what the hell it was going to be about like every typical comic movie. Graphically better than dark knight and acting.
No, if you read my post u'd see i'm saying for the non-fans who see this as an action film will be disappointed. I personally am a guy who prefers substance over visuals. This movie had no substance and bad acting. So its a lose = lose situation. The graphic novel is superior to this crap film and actually makes you think. The film was hollow.
Theres nothing wrong with superhero movies as escapism entertainment. Iron Man was really well done entertainment. This movie just happens to be something more. It muses on many complex issues. Including the atomic bomb, God, globalism, violence, etc, etc.
Watchmen fits more when compared with 300, V for Vendetta or Sin City rather than the Dark Night or Spider man movies, for it is more a precise adaptation from comic book to movie rather than a "inspired" movie about a known superhero. if for example they ever made Kraven's Last Hunt into a movie, then we'd have something more similar to Watchmen. so far Spider Man movies are just another thing. I think the Dark Night fits in the same category of the Marvel movies.
Finally! Someone who recognizes the problem with most comic books adapted to film: the image is translated, not the stories or the characters! When Spiderman fought his enemies in the three films, did he make wise cracks? NO! Was "The Dark Knight" directly based on one Batman comic or a series of comics? NO! "V," "300" and "Watchmen" followed their original sources far more closely. Whether that makes them better is a matter of opinion, but they're definitely apples & oranges territory!
They screwed up "V for Vendetta." They dumbed it down for a mass audience. They made V a sympathetic freedom-fighter. The book is about anarchy vs. fascism. They dramatically changed the story, and totally missed the main theme.
That movie is the reason Alan Moore took his name off the Watchmen movie. He'd had enough with hollywood screwing up adaptations of his work.
Don't go see it. For fans, it doesn't allow you to connect with the characters emotionally like in the book, and for non-fans it is marketed as an action movie when it is really a 2hour 45min long boring pile of nothing. So everybody loses. Everything you saw in the trailers and movie spots are all of the action scenes. Buy the book or the motion comic on itunes. You'll have a much better experience.
OK,People need to stop geting mad about reviews and comments, everyone has an opinion and some critects liked it and some didnt. Can everyone understand that ok?
Spider-Man is predictable? How could you possibly predict a nuclear physicist would have his four octopus arms welded into his spine during an accident when something goes horribly wrong with his revolutionary new atomic generator?
spider man is pathetic comapred with this movie. I saw it yesterdfay and I am so well impressed that I have to go see it AGAIN today! screw spiderman and walt disney!
Come on man. Movies like Spider Man and Iron Man are in one category, and The Dark Knight and Watchmen are in another. Take out the action in Spider Man, and its a bad comedy.
but Iron Man is as good as Watchmen, just in another way, because it's more of a comedy, this is a tragedy, and The Dark Knight is in his own league of comic book movies....
Yeah, Iron Man was good. But I'm just ready for superhero movies to stop being comedies. Even the first two X Men had some pretty bad jokes thrown in.

Issues:
1. Gratuitous CGI penis.
We actually get to see inside this this super-evolved entity's omniscience and it's just a series of fucked-up flashbacks, like uh, memory.
mytube2048 2 years ago
we actualli dont really get to see Dr. manhattans omniscience because Ozmandyias (spell) had those 'things' being omitted from antarctica which was blocking his ability to do so...he could only unlock what was in Silk spectres memory and tell us his own story from memory........i felt the compostion was amazing...it felt like i was watchng a comic book...as opposed to a movie based on the comic-novel....did u see when night owl opened his door, after rorschach broke in for his beans....

I don't know what movie some of you saw here... it was AMAZING! Great effects, great casting... the soundtrack was so random when I saw it I laughed out loud but it just worked. It's biggest flaw was that it followed the story line so well and let's face it... that's a flaw a lot more comic-book inspired movies should have (I'm talking to you X-Men and Spiderman... )
startseeingtheatre 2 years ago
I have a question for those who say the movie is terrible: Have you even read the graphic novel?
jupface 2 years ago
I just saw this, it was not a bad flick. I mean an entertaining movie woth watching, good way to kill 3 hours, lol. I agree with this video when he says that the visual effects were awesome. What did he mean when he said that it had "willingness to debate itself"?
rmc032988 2 years ago
i loved everything about this movie, and i'm not even a total 'Watchmen' fangirl!
the characters were all complex and flawed, the storyline was dark and engrossing.
i even loved the soundtrack. i dont think they were going for a 'Forrest Gump' timeline thing with the tunes because not every tune matched up with the timing of each scene. i think they were shooting more for a quirky atomospheric thing.
they succeeded.
i'd give this movie 5 stars for casting Jackie Earle Haley, alone.

The movie sucked and the box office reflected it. Fans of the graphic novel who boycotted this bullshit representation of genius work, rejoice.

This movie was bad because it wasn't a superhero movie, it was an art movie marketed as a superhero movie..
I came in not really expecting action but a good story with flattering direction...sadly the only good parts were the first and last 15 minutes and a blue guy who couldn't figure out to whether to wear clothes or not..not to mention the awful music editor who doesn't deserve another job in hollywood (hallelujah during a sex scene?)
skip it..
BennyHarassi 2 years ago
I really didn't like the music either! I understood what they were shooting for , a pop. reference similar to forrest gump, but it was soo forced.

Hallelujah during a sex scene, yes! It's satire. That's the point. It's a parody of a typical movie sex scene.

Honxy45 2 years ago

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! Good review! If you understood the movie and the depth of it's content, you probably liked it, if you didn't cause your an idiot..... you probably are going to bash it, just saying it is a movie made for a smarter audience, not like many other superhero movies that are aimed at kids
mike2928 2 years ago
Well. . . some people are bashing it because they feel it has been watered down from the original graphic novel. The original graphic novel had much more depth to it. Also. . . there are some literal changes in the movie which are not in line with original story.
I suggest you read the graphic novel . . . but since you watched this movie prior to reading the novel, then (I hate to say) perhaps some of enjoyment or impact of the story from reading it will be ruined.
konman001 2 years ago

Elric33239 2 years ago 3
if you read the comic you might not like it i never did and i really liked this movie it's different in many ways that being how there all pretty much like poor version of bruce wayne except night owl and the villian guy and dr. manhattan was hands down the most powerful person in the movie but his character development made him a loner from,,well humans but like i said if you read the comic then you might not like because you'll knit-pick details and tell everyone it's a horrible moive

It was like watching a long, cheesy, beautiful piece of scat.
Director = masturbating
Character development = lacking
(how do the other 'heroes' get their powers?)
Villain = bad actor
Blue guy = unnecessary glowing blue nudity
Weak, poisonous, unnecessary ... overly underdone... and just WRONG!
(soundtrack, moral, everything!)
mercurylightbulb 2 years ago

ghostbuster56 2 years ago
it's funny whenever someone doesn't like this movie..they always mention Manhattan's, or from your words, "Blue guy's" nudity, and how it is overdone. He's nude pretty much through the entire graphic novel.
it just shows how immature some people are. It's an R rating. If you can't handle male nudity... than watch spiderman.

As it stands, yeah, the movie missed the point.
indiesk8r1 2 years ago
In the book, Veidt kills millions to save billions, and brings peace based on a lie. Peace comes because the world chooses to unite against a common enemy. The other characters are then forced to decide if they should expose Veidt.

SykoChiipmunK 2 years ago
I see your point abt sex scenes in movies, but the point of this one is that Dan cldnt get it up until he is "empowered" by the costume and when he puts it on and him & Silk Spectre rescue the people, he is finally "powerful" so the sex ensues. They did go overboard in the movie, but in the comic it makes sense.

2 1/2 stars out of 5
DrDoomFate 2 years ago

The film was hollow.
traileruler 2 years ago
Theres nothing wrong with superhero movies as escapism entertainment. Iron Man was really well done entertainment. This movie just happens to be something more. It muses on many complex issues. Including the atomic bomb, God, globalism, violence, etc, etc.
duncan36 2 years ago
Watchmen fits more when compared with 300, V for Vendetta or Sin City rather than the Dark Night or Spider man movies, for it is more a precise adaptation from comic book to movie rather than a "inspired" movie about a known superhero. if for example they ever made Kraven's Last Hunt into a movie, then we'd have something more similar to Watchmen. so far Spider Man movies are just another thing. I think the Dark Night fits in the same category of the Marvel movies.
starpier 2 years ago
Elric33239 2 years ago
They screwed up "V for Vendetta." They dumbed it down for a mass audience. They made V a sympathetic freedom-fighter. The book is about anarchy vs. fascism. They dramatically changed the story, and totally missed the main theme.
That movie is the reason Alan Moore took his name off the Watchmen movie. He'd had enough with hollywood screwing up adaptations of his work.
Watchmen refused to dumb down the story.
