@THEmissyplease I love him. He's got those big teeth, and knows how to use them.
In Greek Tragedy, the violence always happens offstage. I think it's because the theater was so huge, with the whole town present for a festival, that it wouldn't have been very scary to see it from so far away. To imagine the violence by suggestion or description made it much more immediate. Shakespeare wrote for a much smaller theater and so the violence always happens right there onstage.
Okay, I get that we're supposed to know what Oedipus will find out later, but when all the stuff started falling into place, why couldn't they put it together? When she says that the baby's feet were tied, why didn't he go "I got these scars"? It was prophesized to him, and when she says it was prophesized to her and tells the story, there's really no need to bring anyone else into the conversation. Is it just me?
According to mithology one of Oedipus' ancestors was in exile and fell in love with the son of Pelops, the great grandfather of Agamemnon and Meneleus. He kidnapped the boy and raped him. Pelops cursed him and the House of Cadmus. This eventually destroyed it.
THAT was the origin of this tragedy. Curses were oddly effective sometimes.
Oedipus' very words: "No more, no more shall you look on the misery about me, the horrors of my own doing! Too long you have known the faces of those whom I should never have seen, too long been blind to those for whom I was searching! From this hour, go in darkness!"
The messenger who comes in halfway through this clip played the pilot in the Father Ted episode where they're going to crash but there's only two parachutes!! P.S. I'm not a nerd.
