@gilgamesh310 No really...repeatition is a major problem for nowadays mostly...you see, alot of games of the last generation really gave us alot of substance with the game mechanics they provided, while nowadays we get more style and less substance, and the gameplay gets repeatative because of the unchanged task of just killing enemies without having other gameplay elements to keep it freash
@Miyakolover can you expand on that and maybe give a few examples, because I don't really see it that way. What you do in games generally always grows repetitive, all that matters is whether you enjoy the repetition or not. A stealth game is repetitive, because every level will involve you sneaking around, a shooter is repetitive because every level has you shooting, a beat em up is repetitive because you are fighting people on every level. Why is one game any different?
@gilgamesh310 Basically what I mean is that last gen games let you do more stuff besides killing or shooting, for example remember how Resident Evil was on the PS1 and PS2 (before RE4), you could kill zombies, but also you could solve puzzles, combine items and use them, plan ahead with your bullets and health items, so you see there were more gameplay elements, nowadays RE is just mindless shooting, though that's just a an example
@Miyakolover yeah but repetition isn't always a bad thing. Resident Evil 4 is the best in the series. Just because it might be more repetitious than the previous games in the series doesn't make it worse.
I haven't played all those other games you described but aren't Kingdom Hearts and Nier RPG's. RPG's tend to be more repetitive than most other games, especially JRPG's. You just go around fighting battles for hours and hours.
@gilgamesh310 I beg to disagree with you on RE4, while I still enjoyed it, I don't think it's better that it horror based predicessors, they had far more substance and diversity than RE4 in my opinion atleast, as for Nier and KH, they are totally diffirent from the FF13 crap of walking into corridors, watching a cutscene then a long boss fight, they had more gameplay variety and intresting plots to support them, and other elements I cannot all type due to the lack of space XD
@Miyakolover Escape from Butcher Bay is perhaps one of the few games that isn't repetitive, because you switch between stealth, shooting and fighting on regular occasions. Deus Ex is maybe another example. It's up to you whether you want to do any of the above.
I think this reviewer is a complete pnce regardless. The way he critisised the story just reeks of ignorance. I think it has one of gamings best stories. The twist where you could save alex was really interesting.
@gilgamesh310 There are also other games that don't suffer from being repeatative aswell, such as Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Headhunter, Nier (PS3/360 game), Metal Gear Solid series, Alone in the Dark (PS1) and some others, you see games back then had more purpose that just simply "killing for fun"...which seems like a tradition nowadays
A FKING AVERAGE ACTION GAME?!?!?!?! THIS DUDE DOESNT KNOW WHAT GOOD VIDEO GAMES ARE! This is an amazing game and It's really easy to understand If you play atention to the scripts. It also has amazing voice actors and a really cool storyline. Theres some part were you think you are not going to make it and then something extremely unexpected occurs. Breakdown Is a must have game. It's so sad that they didn't release this on other things like ps3 or any other console. Breakdown Is An Amazing Game
why this game got a bad rep i don't understand. sure, its not perfect and it does have its share of major flaws. However, its positives WAY out way its negatives. Not even today in 2011 do you see to many First person games (if any) that have a realistic first person view, excellent creative si fi story, a FULL FIGHTING SYSTEM, and epic scenes that make your heart beat. This truly is a great game that deserves more reconnection than it got.
And this is the soul reason I don't listen to official reviews when getting games. I played Breakdown for the first time two years ago and thought it was one of the greatest games I have ever played! (And it's not often I say that).
they say mirror's edge is innovating, they forgot about this game I remember being pissed off cuz that machine gun didn't work to well but this game is awesome
The story in Breakdown was absolutely amazing, this guy is a fucking moron. The combat was insanely unique and in no way was as simple as "block and punch. Try using that "block and punch" theory of yours on the final boss and see how far it gets you. As you progress you unlock more unique abilities to defeat your seemingly invincible enemies, and that progression is very steady and well thought out.
Breakdown is like a Melee RPG/FPS/Action Adventure/ Sci-fi/paranormal shit storm of awesome.
I bet the reviewer thought the story wasn't there because he wanted it spelled out for him, Breakdown is unique because you know as much as the main character knows. making it more believable
and ths game being old n all, it scared the crap out of me when it comes to eerie music and shit. yea ths game ws hard but i hate how the powers in this game were almost ineffective. I love the energy ball and time sloow down power. thts beast! haha and the ultimate derick soundtrack is radical!
What? This game is awesome. Sure, the combat is alittle off but there are so many moves you can do. Just yesterday, I broke the neck of a T'lan warrior.
This game is exciting and full of twists that make me play it over and over again.
This is one of the greatest games ever created, hands down.
It hurts me to see this reveiwer didnt even make it halfway through the game, and yet sees fit to judge it.
After you get into the Nexus (which judging by the gameplay footage they showed, they didn't even get that far) the game changes its tone completely, into one of the most immerse and amazing sci-fi storylines ever created.
Ah well. the best games of all time are never popular, and never get high critics scores.
@E3Daw I love the fuck out of this game but I will admit, the control sometimes pisses me off so much, in fact usually the only reason I'd stop playing is because of the control pissing me off. Maybe because I played in on the 360.
this reveiwer better die on a toilet seat with a lot of bull**** coming out of his mouth. the story was catching and wanted you to move on the game to find our more. Even if the game had some hard parts in it
THat was way too generous. This game has one feature that ruins it. TO pick up items you have to push x 3 times. ONce to look at your hand, twice to bend over pick stuff up and study it like a retard with something shiny, and 3 times to put it in your pocket...all while being shot.
Umm, thats what makes the game REALISTIC, in real life, you can't just walk over ammo and pick it up, you have to pick it up yourself, all while being shot at.
sorry buddy, but this game is fucking brilliant. the plot is one of the most immersing plots out there, the combat is great and the gunplay, although it is lacking, for the purposes of it game suffices.
Uh, no. Last time I recalled, the Matrix didn't rely on worm holes, T'langen, the Pendulum Effect, and some freaky ass shit that goes on in this game. The Matrix is comprised of stupid one liners, machines, CGI, and overkilled bullet time effects. That's THEIR plot. >_>
Mirror's Edge has nothing to do with this game. They didn't rip anything off. They were just adding to the genre of completely first person action. They've been doing this ever since Maken X and Riddick. >_>
Yeah, this game pissed me off a lot too with the difficulty, which, to any casual gamer, would just call this game complete shit. But if you stick to the game, it is quite rewarding and interesting than most games on today's market.
He says the story isn't told very well. This guy should be executed. I can tell you right now, this game has one of the best stories, best told. Did this guy skip some cut-scenes or fuckin'what? Or is he so new to Gamespot he began playing games just recently? This review 8is totally invalid if you ask me. Shoot him between the eyes. Or replace him with Gerstman.
Well, it's dumb. Though 99 percent of vid game plots are dumb. And more than half of vid games don't even have one. But yeah, Navarro couldn't tell a good good plot even if it slapped his face.
I've played hundreds of games so far (being an old bunny in the 'business') and after Half-Life (1+2), SilentHills and many others I gotta say that BREAKDOWN was one of the TOP5Experiences ever. Great atmosphere and all. Bring on a sequel!
this guy's a retard, the way he talks he sounds like he's just spouting what's on the prompter, NOBODY that actually played the game would say you could block-punch-block and expect to survive ONE enemy. matter of fact, nobody that actually played the game could bring themselves to complain about it at all. its one of the hardest games i've ever played when set on hardcore, and i never got angry and quit after being stuck, the story is so compelling both in subject matter and delivery. end.
