  • i can see a drum cover being done to this

  • I was in my high school band for the entire time I was in high school and I still don't understand what the point of the conductor is. Especially in a setting such as this, with nothing but pros playing on stage. Can't all of these people keep time for themselves? Aren't they too busy looking at their music to be staring at the conductor? I've never understood. I did play percussion, however, so that might explain it. I always just kept time for myself.

  • @danthemanpatrick

I am not a musician. I asked myself the same question watching Berliner Philarmonniker...

My guess is that conductor is very important BEFORE, to give instructions how to play this and how to stop thet etc etc

  • @danthemanpatrick Guess you didn't notice that the clarinet was out of time after like 5 sec? Try to play together with an orchestra consisting of a 100+ musicians without a conductor

  • @liljeblad So with a conductor, the clarinet player was out of time after 5 seconds. It seems to me that you've proven my point. If this little group can't play together with a conductor, then just imagine how horrible it would be with even more people in the ensemble.

  • @danthemanpatrick In fact, the conductor is extremely important. First of all, he is the one who gives correct instructions to the musicias during the rehearsals, and then, it's very important to have someone who gives you the correct instructions during the interpretation. If the conductor is good enough, the musicians look at him constantly. it doesn't matter if you play percussion or flute, the conductor is equally importante for both of them.

  • @danthemanpatrick The conductor starts songs, and indicates how long to hold fermatas. He is also the one who ultimately decides what tempo to take the entire song, how much to slow down/speed up on a retardando/accelerando. Watching a conductor is also helpful when you are reading complex time signatures. Professionals also make mistakes like everyone else, so the conductor acts as a safeguard incase someone falls out of time.

  • @Zadamanim Excellent points. Much thanks.

  • @danthemanpatrick hahaha i've always wondered that too : D

  • you should see the performance of Nord Netherlands orkest last night in Groningen... this is five stars... They played it like 30% slower than it was supposed to be and were constantly dragging down, so laid back. We have the most advanced classical music education ever, still players with 30+ years of experience have no basic sense of time as a pulse. Kind of sad!

  • How do the pianists keep going without getting RSI or wrist strain?

  • no! I'm sorry, but Nott doesn't know how to conduct this music, and Ensemble Intercontemporain doesn't know how to play it, IMHO. Nott is too expressive in his conduction and he doesn't have rhythm. That's why the entrance of the clarinet is so sloppy and imprecise. Pianos should give emphasis to every note and so should do flutes. Sorry, this is not Ligeti, nor Boulez, nor Messiaen. This is Reich. Bang on a Can overall!!

  • Just brilliant performance!

    Thx for uploading this video!

  • A great recording, great quality, great piece by an even greater composer. The performance, sadly, is subpar.

  • Best done with Jazz musicians. (at least on winds)

  • Not a great performance sadly. The accents should jump out from the texture, they don't. Also, there is some pretty lazy rhythm in the wind players which will get you killed in this work. Clarinets are really not getting it done overall (pitch is pretty poor, they aren't matching the pianos, inaccurate entrances). Pianists are laying the rhythm down OK, but their accents are not happening, they should mirror the winds and add nice color in the 'pops'. Overall I expect more from EI.

  • @piliage Yeah, I have to agree and add that the tempo is a little too fast. Also, the violins seem to slide off strings at times instead of ending the notes.

  • @piliage I definetely agree with you!

  • @piliage Thanks Steve!

  • It was through the album Octet that I was introduced to Reich's work, so this piece will always be dear to me.

  • Thanks so much for uploading this concert. This is probably my favourite piece of music, regardless of genre - I could listen to this all day long, everyday... Forever.

It makes me think of rushing through the streets of New York City, running around looking for something, mostly alone.

  • @enowilson absolutely.

  • @enowilson me too

  • Thank you! Nice piece! Can you tell us where it was performed? Thank you so much! Good ear ! Good eye !

  • This performance is just so...dry; and sharp (in terms of articulation, not pitch). I don't understand why the strings feel the need to accent almost everything! These long, choraleish passages are based on Hebrew chant...they should therefore (in my humble opinion) be cantible and legato and gorgeous, and provide a stunning collage when juxtaposed with the chattery, leggiero, conversational winds. The effect is completely and utterly lost in this performance. What a shame.

  • wtf, the clarinets are terrible

  • Why is everyone hating on the clarinets

  • @amistrymister because they are out of time and the note lengths are wrong

  • @woodros the note lengths are written as eighth notes, which is what they are playing. They are only very slightly out of time, particularly when they get to the end of the bar and they breathe. They still do a very good job though. Pianos in this are fantastic.

I think the clarinets are an error of the sound engineers - leveling is a bit wrong, but this is still a great performance

  • wow they spent too much on production !!!!!

  • weak performance, without steady beat

  • I personally enjoyed this piece. I'm not to fimiliar with it so I don't know if the clarinet player were supposed to be unison or not. But the flute, piccolo, strings and piano players did a good job. I want to learn this. I working on Vermont counterpoint from steve reich as well.

  • my God, those clarinets :-S

  • the clarinet is worst

  • not my favorite performance of this piece. clarinets are splattering the notes. more violins!!!

  • Questo Pezzo è FAVOLOSO!!!

    What a wonderful music!

    Thank you for posting!

  • A "flutized" orchestra. Good!

  • lol made me smile
